Post nasal drip, silent reflux etc.

Hi All,
I have come across this forum whilst searching the internet for some answers. I have been suffering from the symptoms mentioned on here for about 6 years now.
Just to give you a short overview, will keep it short: I am living in South Africa, 29 years old, male, problem started with an irritating cough & constant throat clearing & got sore throat but not too often. Started getting upper airway infections & decided to go to doctor that diagnosed me with Asthma. After I started using the Asthma inhalers the sore throat became more apparent but my cough stopped. Decided to stop using inhalers but problem just got worse and worse over the years. Daily symptoms now include sticky white mucus in back of throat, post nasal drip, sore / burning throat, constant throat clearing, hoarseness in voice, throat clearing after eating (does not matter what I eat), blocked noise, sinus infections, etc.
I have been on all sorts of medication, nasal sprays, antihistamines, Cortisone's. I have been to 2 different ENT's, had sinus surgery (which made it worse), been to 2 different allergists, seen many GP's & a homeopathic doctor & no relief. The latest thing I have done is the G-scope after reading about LPR & doc advised that all seems normal. I have tried nexium & now use another med for reflux.
My work also involves speaking a lot so I suffer more at work than at home. I dont drink or smoke either.
I have traveled to other countries & the symptoms still continue.
My question is to those who suffer from this, do you have lots of stress, have you suffered some sort of trauma before symptoms started, do you have an active job or are you sitting at a desk all day?
Also, I haven't manged to find any forums like this for South Africans, so if there are anybody in SA reading this with these symptoms please make contact.
Many thanks, any input will be appreciated.

I think we all get it. Its not seasonal. I've got mucus every morning and throughout the day with frequent sinus headaches. Apparently the acid reflux triggers the mucous generation. I think it might be the body's attempt to protect your throat from acid damage. The real question no one seams to be able to answer is why we have acid reflux. I'm not buying this food sensitivity nonsence. I'm thinking its something altogether different.

Do some research. I've read it's because your stomach isn't making enough acid. Or you have gerd or gastritis from binge drinking, or bad health, smoking etc. Also can be h.pylori , a bacterial cause. You must see a GI or at least doctor. If it is continuing heartburn, it's can be gastritis, etc

Yes, I've done the research, if research is what it is. Personally I think its speculation and I'm thinking its wrong. I don't smoke, I don't drink. I've had them put a tube down my throat, I've gone on bread and water diets to see if it was something I was sensitive to. The PPI and other medications have no effect. I'm more inclined to think there is either an undiscovered bacteria thats affecting us, or its because of some additive in our food/water/environment. I've had these symptoms 23 years. Doctors have been no use, and they often use terms like IBS and shuffle you out the door even thought things like IBS have no known cause or cure. Doctors seem to think that if they lable it then its job done even if there's no actual science behind. All this talk of too much, or too little acid doesn't seem to have the weight of scientific evidence against. If so who exactly is doing the research? When I went on a coarse of PPI's last year I was shocked at the cost of them and the fact that a lot of people were being put on them. Someone is making a lot of money from the notion that we're making too much acid. In response to you initial question, yes, the running nose, etc is normal for this condition what ever its cause.

We're you on any antacids meds? I'm thinking the meds are causing this..

For most of 23 years I have not been on any medications at all. 23 years ago when I started having a soar throat, coughing, sinus pain, etc I had no idea what it was and the doctors had no opinion. Its only been in the last 2 years that I discovered that these issues were associated with reflex and my ENT confirmed reflux as occurring. I tried some of the commonly used drugs for reflux for 2 months but when they had zero effect I stopped using them. Medication won't be the cause of what ever it is that we've got.

Yes, I have sneezing, stuffed up nose, and post nasal drip almost every night. I've had endoscopy, colonoscopy, ear pain, and allergy tests. They can't find anything. I refuse to take PPI's because of all the things that I've read about them lately. They don't help me anyway. Post Nasal drip is my biggest annoyance!!!
Good luck,
Pam

I got my tooth pulled and they told me it messed with my sinuses so not to blow my nose because it was bleeding excessively. So that was on September 1st they put stitches in and everything. Well last 3 weeks I drink coffee and then I got this weird nasal drip and blowing out coffee or snot which ever it is. Snot looks like coffee when it comes out my nose. When it gets into my lungs I almost gag and puked a few times because sometimes the mucousy stuff won't come out but it goes from my nose down Everytime i drink coffee. Only time it happens. I've been experiencing chest pain and hurt burn. I don't know what it is. 5 years now I've been having stomach pain but Drs never did anything about it. I get alot of headaches, hands go numb also. I don't know what I wrong with me. ?? Anyone ever have this problem??

Hello Ryan,
I am sorry you are suffering so badly with your allergies. I am too! It has been a lifelong problem. I suffer year round but the fall is by far when I suffer the most. I life in an area where there are corn and bean fields. I am allergic to the crops and especially when they cut them down. I am taking decongestants and antihistimines which of course have side effects. Now I have developed a cough after a cold and I am not sure if it's from the cold or allergies. I think the cough is more annoying than anything. To answer your question about stress, Yes! I am under stress a lot with my job. I think this only adds to the problem. It makes my acid reflux act up, which also can cause symptoms like allergies and a post nasal cough.
I just realized you posted this over a year ago. I hope you are feeling better and that you don't have this problem anymore.

night and let it sit until the morning then strain it and drink. You could double this and make 500 ml of it and drink a little all day. The terrible wet cough went in two days. It was a miracle.
ALSO, inthe morning you could also learn to do a nasal wash to wash out your sinuses. Buy a Netipot. You will be quite amazed what you will blow out!
Good luck.

Hi AmesburyAbbey,
Thank you for the recipe. Did the PND come back or did the tea knock it out for good? I've been suffering with PND for over a year.
Thank you,

My husband suffered from post nasal drip for years now. He is a artist painter and working with Turpentine made things worse. He got to the point where thid dissorder took over his life and he couldn't do almost anything. He couldn't sleep at night, couldn't work anymore and suffered a lot. Doctors prescribed him everything available on the market but nothing helped. Therefore I decided to help and thought I share with you the treatment. I have a line of therapeutic organic products and I designed a nasal drop and a tea that both made him better. Actually he has no symtoms anymore and continue his life like nothing happened.
Nasal drops for cleaning/ washing sinuses:
- 150ml boiled water
- 2 Tsp salt
- 2 Tsp baking soda
- 4 drops organic Eucalyptus oil
- 3 drops organic Peppermint drops
- 3 drops organic Sage oil
- 3 drops organic Thyme oil
- 4 drops organic Chamomille oil
- 4 drops organic Manuka oil
Put it in a bottle with a dripulator. Put drops in your nose every hour for the first 4 days and then 3 times a day.
Tea:
- Boil 1 liter of water with fresh Thyme, Manuka and Ginger in water. Take it off heat and cover with a lid. Let it cool. Drink a cup 3 times a day with 1 teaspoon of Honey.
I hope this helps.
