Post nasal drip, silent reflux etc.

Hi All,
I have come across this forum whilst searching the internet for some answers. I have been suffering from the symptoms mentioned on here for about 6 years now.
Just to give you a short overview, will keep it short: I am living in South Africa, 29 years old, male, problem started with an irritating cough & constant throat clearing & got sore throat but not too often. Started getting upper airway infections & decided to go to doctor that diagnosed me with Asthma. After I started using the Asthma inhalers the sore throat became more apparent but my cough stopped. Decided to stop using inhalers but problem just got worse and worse over the years. Daily symptoms now include sticky white mucus in back of throat, post nasal drip, sore / burning throat, constant throat clearing, hoarseness in voice, throat clearing after eating (does not matter what I eat), blocked noise, sinus infections, etc.
I have been on all sorts of medication, nasal sprays, antihistamines, Cortisone's. I have been to 2 different ENT's, had sinus surgery (which made it worse), been to 2 different allergists, seen many GP's & a homeopathic doctor & no relief. The latest thing I have done is the G-scope after reading about LPR & doc advised that all seems normal. I have tried nexium & now use another med for reflux.
My work also involves speaking a lot so I suffer more at work than at home. I dont drink or smoke either.
I have traveled to other countries & the symptoms still continue.
My question is to those who suffer from this, do you have lots of stress, have you suffered some sort of trauma before symptoms started, do you have an active job or are you sitting at a desk all day?
Also, I haven't manged to find any forums like this for South Africans, so if there are anybody in SA reading this with these symptoms please make contact.
Many thanks, any input will be appreciated.

I have all the issues with drainage down my throat for almost two years now like everyone here, I have been to every Dr under the sun and It has caused my life to change and not in a good way!
I just tried a new spray called "dymista nasal spray" which seems to help, not 100% but I would say 90% so its a start. I will update on this spray after using it for a few weeks.
Going in for my first scope tomorow but I really do not believe that it is a stomach issue but we will see! Good luck guys!

Hi,
I have exactly the same problem as you are describing. I've also been to many doctors but none of them found the real cause. I've narrowed it down to the food I eat. If I avoid milk and diary products and citrus fruits, I feel a relief of this condition. It is not curred, but still the post nasal drip is less and often disappears. I'm also thinking what my cause this is my big belly. I usually try to hide it and somehow unintentionally contract my abs muscles constantly. Lately I realise that I'm causing a pressure to it and try to relax. This somehow alleviates the problem, so I think it may be related. I know I should stop eating sugar foods and try to exercise more, but I'm not consistent. I heard from a friend of mine that his wife also started to have the same symptoms since the birth of her child, so pregnacy might be another cause for this condition.

Hi Ryan. I have suffered for 6 years or more with my throat clearing. Very embarrassing in public, been to the doctors numerous times and have seen different ones as well as specialist. I have tried many different medicines and nothing yet.
Haven't tried to hard on a strict diet. I have had times that I been clearing over and over again and feel shortness of breath and painful. Please let me know what helped you! Please and thank you.

Hi. I am from Sacramento, CA (which is a valley and very bad for allergies). 35 years old. I have had mild reflux on and off through the years. I don't smoke, hardly drink. I'm a vocalist and a full time music teacher. I have to use my voice a lot to be heard over classrooms and while directing concerts. I am also on my feet all day. My job can be stressful though, when working with hundreds of children. I also have 3 young children lf my own. In July, I started getting symptoms of GERD but nothing too concerning. By August it was terribly bad with reflux "attacks," lump in throat feeling, post nasal drip and laryngitis (which is extremely upsetting as a vocalist and teacher). The Dr put me on Prilosec and that stopped the burning attacks but not the silent type symptoms such as the post nasal drip and laryngitis. While teaching yesterday, I began coughing and then started choking on mucus. I was so scared because I felt like I couldn't take a breath in. This has now made me very anxious that it will happen again. I don't have asthma, but it sure felt like what an asthma attack would be like if I did. But water and calming down cleared it.
Regarding stress, I lost my father in December and had pneumonia then followed by terribly allergies all spring. I noticed the heart burn was very bad during the time my dad was sick and I had pneumonia and a bad cough. Then Claritin all spring for allergies. The severe GERD came up over the summer while off allergy meds. I also gained about 10 lbs during the winter and spring. I drink a ton of coffee because it keeps me going and I love it, but I wonder if that didn't help matters. Was also buying little treats like chocolate for myself when getting a coffee. Or I would drink mochas. I've stopped doing that now and I've lost a lot of that weight, if not considered "thin." But I don't feel any better. I'm eating healthy, gluten free and almost dairy free. But I'm not much better. I often wonder if my extreme anxiety is causing this, or making matters worse. While I am very active and on my feet, I don't physically exercise at the gym. Going to try that more and see if it helps. I'm at a loss. Thanks for listening. Would love any advice.

Hi there, I too have silent reflux along with a hiatal hernia and GERD. I can bring up mucus if I need to put my finger down my throat to get up food that has stuck due to reflux - stopped me eating out now as last time hubs and I eat out I got some seafood stuck down my chest, I had to go to the loo to bring it up and ended up with lipstick all over my face, when I looked in the mirror it was a funny sight but did upset me. Scary stuff and feel like I cannot breathe. Sometimes wake in the night gagging with it.
I eat healthy anyway, too much red wine though. You don't have that problem.
You must know that coffee is the devil for us with this - if you miss it - have you tried the bottle brand which is no caffeine - lovely - made of chicory which actually aids digestion.
You don't need the gym - best is walking for digestion, moves your food through without jumping it around.
I have found Mastic Gum and Pepzin along with Ranitidine really good. Calmed it down so much. Hope this helps.

Hi, I have just been diagnosed silent reflux. Similar symptoms to you. All ent guy said was this is what you have take 20gms omeprozole twice a day come back in four weeks. No change. Cough slightly better but now I have burning mouth syndrome too.
I have found swilling my mouth with bicarbonate of soda and water after every meal and before bed helps. Also for sinuses saltwater nasal spray 3 times a day. It is such a misunderstood disease I really don't think most doctors know how to treat it. Going to start a ph balanced diet and ph 8.8 water next week. Miserable isn't it? Good luck finding some relief.

Hi, my symptoms sound pretty similar. Started after a particularly stressful episode followed by a terrible Cole and cough. Cough never went and other symptoms followed.
Doctor just said take 20gms omeprozole twice a day and come back in 5 weeks. I don't think doctors know how to deal with it. I've done so much research myself. Forums like this help. I haven't had any relief, in fact now gave burning mouth syndrome. I found belly breathing helps, also swishing and gargling with baking soda 3 times a day and at bed time. A saline nasal spray 3 times a day for sinuses. Am going to start dropping acid diet next week also ph 8.8 water ordered from Amazon. Good luck finding your cure, hope this helps.

I have read today in The Acid Watcher that alkaline water is probably ineffective and can be dangerous. The Acid Watcher by Dr Jonathan Aviv an ent specialist.

Hi.
I just wanted you to try it out if it will work. First lets me explain my problem. I had voice hoarseness only then i went to ENT and diagnosed with a vocal cord polyp as my job invoved a lot of talking in the phone. that was in 2002 and was operated to removed it.
I didnt have any complication at all and continued with my job and a lot of stresses. Then in 2009 i started getting pain the throat. I was afraid that it was vocal cord again due to my talking but doctor you cant have it as my voice is not hoarse. I suffered in pain and in winter was more bad. I went to ENT consultant and said that my vocal cord is inflamed and have to live with for the rest of my life. The pain I had daily I wish just to remove my throat as it was inside the vocal cord even warm tea could not relieve it. The doctor told me if your career was a musician or a teacher you vave to leave your career. Thanks God this time I was no longer working but the pain was too much. Inflamed vocal cord is painful as its inside and unlike like throat you can put warm water or tea and get relief for sometimes.
I had to accept doctors advice that i have to live with it.
I believe in God and kept on praying as God is the healer of everything. I just kept on praying. It took me 4 years i couldnt eat spicy food or chillies and our food is always spicy.i had to eat boiled food mainly.
In 2013 I developed another problem. After reading internet for that problem it said that turmeric helps it. I remember even that time when my vocal cord problem started, sometimes it will be like hoarse voice and a bit of blood. I took turmeric with honey in a table spoon and ate it as my last food in my stomach when going to sleep. I didnt eat anything or even drink water then slept. Then morning i could see more dirty or mucus and blood coming out and helped me a bit to remove the hoarseness and relieved.but i didnt continue the turmeric for long.my new complication i started using a lot of turmeric like a quarter teaspoon mixed in warm milk or even a soup or honey as you want it. It was a habit drinking it almost daily i cant remember for 3 months or more. I used it 3 times but depends on the person. Even 2 times morning and evening. All of a sudden i realised my vocal cord gone and could eat all the things i wanted especially spicy food and chillies. I was happy to eat the food i loved again after doctors told me i have to leave with it for the rest of my life and prescribed omeprazole for acidity to relieved it which it didnt help.
I have deviated septum in my nose and i didnt know as i didnt have any complication.Only in 2009 when i had this problem again he told me. In 2012 i moved to a house which had damp in the wall. And even mould was there in the house. So i started to get breathing problem.my nose which had deviated septum was giving me a lot of problem. I went to ENT doctor and said i have rhinitis. He gave me drops to put. Iam not a fan if medicines as iam afraid of side effects of medicines. Therefore i used a bit the drops i left them. Then i started to use turmeric again especially when i go to sleep. I felt it helped me opening the nose airways a bit.
Again this year 2017 i just moved to my son's small flat. iam getting some breathing problems. I was told its acid reflux. Iam taking organic saffron it helps in opening the lungs airways. I see improvement for sometime but still it comes and goes.we have also throat problem.. I realised its the carpet which holds a lot of germs or bacteria.iam planni g to remove it and see. I suggest if you have a carpet just put wood or laminate.
Try organic turmeric daiky but start with small quantities first to see if it suits you.uf you get saffron it can help with yr chest or lungs. You can go internet and browse ghe benefit of turmeric and saffron.but esp saffron there is fake one which looks exactly same. Its important to start with turmeric and if you are using medicine ask your doctor for advice and try to use in small quantity not to react with other drugs.I pray for you, may God heal you all and give you health

Hello Ryan,
did you solve your problem in the end?
It's been three years with post nasal drip for me, the worst time of my life. The problem started after I relocated to the UK, it started with a sore throat, doctors gave me antibiotics for a month, then they said I had acid reflux and they treated me for it for months, then I discovered I am allergic to house dust mites. In the UK carpets are very popular, so is air-conditioning and forced ventilation, a powerful combination for me. When there is air flowing my condition gets super bad, if the air is conditioned then I am really screwed. I have spent lots of money, I have seen lots of doctors, no improvement. My throat looks really bad (lots of spots and bumps), it hurts really bad, my mouth is really inflamed, the back of my nose hurts bad too, and I have troubles speaking. I am now trying allergen immunotherapy, in the hope that will fix the problem, but I am not too hopeful... This problem will kill me if left untreated, and unfortunately no-one seems to be able to help. I wish you the very best of luck!

Hi there Fab
Sorry to hear about your problem too. Dont really log in here anymore.
To date found no "real" cure. I use a "Vicks Inhaler" a few times a day, but other than that I have stopped using any sprays or medication and I found it being better. I just continue with my normal life now & trying not to let it get to me.
I really hope you find some relief, I know its horrible and if I ever find something that works I will post it here
Good luck to all & thanks for all the replies.

I am having the same issue, nasal drainage down my throat which causes me to clear my throat. It seems to only happen after I eat. I was sick for a couple of weeks with a cold/ sore throat, took forever to get over it then I got a stomach virus.. now I well except for this nasal thing. The only thing that gets rid of it is Mucus Relief PE, Walgreens brand. It works pretty fast too. But not sure how safe it is to take it every day. I also use 24 hour allergy nasal spray, Walgreens brand. I use it before bed. The Mucus Relief pill works for about 7-8 hours, I only take one a day the use the spray. I have no idea what’s causing this buts it’s so annoying.
