Gillian, it's early days! Sleeping is hard for at least 4 weeks. Elevate and ice as OFTEN as possible. Drink lots of fluids. That might help your headache.. and exercise 1/2 hour after your pain meds, then elevate and ice straight after exercise. WE're all different. Just keep doing what the physio advises, and if anything causes too much pain, STOP doing it! You'll move at your own pace so comparing is not wise. You are not alone so just keep doing your thing,,and come here for reassurance. Good luck. I'm 8 months post op and still working on building up muscle strength and flexibility. NO pain walking or sleeping, and the knee feels way stronger than the other one.

Gillian, its very early days yet. I had my op in January and I've only just started sleeping "normally" i.e. not waking up every hour. I couldn't sleep in bed at all for the first 4 weeks, spent every night surfing the net, reading, listening to "calming" sounds, walking about etc, and then catching up on the sofa during the day. It passes.....I sleep much better now than I've done for the last five years. Don't over-exercise, only do what you can, you'll get stronger. Plenty of rest and ice as well as exercise. Ive been back at work for 4 weeks (sedentary job!) and each day i feel some improvement - I can do a supermarket shop now, can manage to do most of the housework (unfortunately!), even a bit of ironing! Looking forward to being able to walk more on my holidays in 7 weeks. 😁😁

Not sleeping after TKR happens to most of us. Don't fret about it, it makes it worse.. I only managed 2 hours at first, so made sure I took water, snacks like a banana and a biscuit, a book and my ipad up to bed with me. I napped in the day if I felt like it. I think it was around the four week mark that I finally managed five hours. Keep your fluids up and see if the headache improves. when you say that the exercises are an effort, do you mean because you are tired, they are hard to do or that it is too painful?
