Post op Anti Inflammatories After THR

Posted , 11 users are following.

hi,

are NSAIDs obligatory after the THR operation?

i would like to avoid if possible as previously these have triggered tinnitus.

can I manage with other pain relief (ie opioids)?

and if not NSAID's, what else is used for post operative swelling?

thanks,

lindsey

NSAID's are very hard on the stomach, as I understand it, check with your GP, If you are suffereing from tinnitus after taking them you may be suffering from slent reflux, and that is not good for you long term.

My husband suffers from bad tinnitus, after he was put on aspirin for heart failure, and Dr's said their was nothing they could do for his madding tinnitus.

By chance he had a very bad dose of reflux, and GP Dr put him on NEXIUM, (sometimes causes tinnitus) after about two days, after 3 half years of tinnitus, he said the tinnitus has gone, I couldn't believe it, reported it to GP, and chemist, chemist reported to internal magazine.

Some months later, had our yearly visit to hospital, to see specialist cardiologist, and his usual question has the GP changed your medication, yes he has been put on NEXIUM, and it is helping, cardiologist said yes we are trying that in the hospital, as well, I read about it helping someone in a chemists magazine.

A link, possible, yes, but I wasn't questioning one of the best cardiologists/professor's in the country opinion about what works and what doesn't, especially when he only takes a few public patients each year.

I am told he picks and chooses which patients he treats himself, and then only interesting ones, the rest are left in the hands of junior staff members, although they do have the professor to call on if necessary.

      Hi Lynn,

thanks for for the info re tinnitus.

so, just to be clear, the nexium was prescribed for reflux, and ended up stopping the tinnitus?

LDW - thats right, the whys and hows I don't understand, I just know it works.

Remember my husband is a heart failure patient, and is on a cocktail of other medication as well, so it may be some combination of those.

My theory is it worth a trail, if you have tinitus, if it can't do any harm YES.

LDW - a little story told to me by my rheumotologist.

Apparently when they were treating cacner patients with Methrotrextrate, the patients were reporting that their background arthritis was better than it had been in years.

Thats apparently how it came to be used for arthritis patients, because patients had reported a GOOD SIDE EFFECT.

So important that we not only report bad side effects but also good side effects to our Dr's and chemists.

Definitely you do not have to take NSAIDs - I am alleging to lots of meds too, and didn't take even one so don't worry.

It has made no difference at all to my recovery not having them, everyone is different but it was fine for me. I simply took blood thinners and paracetamol from day 2/3. The meds were causing more problems than the operation!!

It really is a good idea to have a pain plan with your consultant of drugs you know you can tolerate and stick to them rigidly, otherwise your recovery could be hampered by side effects, and you may find you can manage on lower pain killers.

Best of luck - come back if you have any other questions

I also have the buzzing in my ears and i think you may be on to something there with the NSAIDS i will give them a break and see if the buzzing goes off to somebody else ha ha

I had them in hospital the first time around, and discontinued the ones I was  discharged with after a few days as they upset my digestive system.

Second time around, they gave me them for the first 24 hours or so, and none afterwards.

So I think, no, they are NOT compulsory.  Let the staff know about your intolerance to them.

I am not allowed any form of NSAIDS as long term use caused me to have a heart attack a couple of years ago.

I have been taking a combination of opioids, paracetamol and nefopam for pain relief, not just for the hip replacement but also AS so I have been on regular pain relief for several years.

I didn't have much problem with post op swelling, but that could be due to what I am taking to control the AS.

Back in the 60s I used to do a mean twist to good old Chubby Checker. Reckon the can-can would be a doddle compared with a couple of minutes twisting to Let's Twist Again------like we did last century cool
