Post surgery visual distubance... normal or not?

Had cataract surgery two weeks ago, eye seems to be healing but having odd side effects.
- Now have a 45 degree slice of halo around bright lights when in the dark. I can see my eye opening and closing over it. Also an almost horizontal bar of light jetting off from the top of that.
- Ghosting in operated eye which appears to be a reflection of any light source, window, light, mirror, screen. the image appears to be projected slightly in front of and to the left and down of the actual object. The accumulation of these images in a brightly lit supermarker make depth perception and orientation difficult. Makes me feel light headed.
- double images, probably related to the ghosting, but separate images whereas the ghosting is an extension of the image.
- Lots of brown floaters, very annoying, hopefully that one is normal. not sure about others though.
Any one else had these symptoms and if so what was causing it? Have had monofocal lens put in on the NHS so no discussion about lens choices!
Here's a picture of the partial halo as best I can explain it.

get a second opinion with the eye dilated as soon as possible, some of these symptoms sounds like the lens is not centered, and you are seeing the edge. i had ghosting images as well, due to a tilt in the lens. i ended uo having an exchange due to the lens being improperly installed with the haptic free floating outside the bag and rubbing against the iris. once the enchange was done, ghosting disappeared ...infortunately floaters are always around, over the counter eye drops helps somewhat
good luck

Yes, you are right @julielyn. Just had follow up appointment. Lens is tilted. Has to be moved or replaced. Awaiting consultation with vitreous surgeon (whatever they call them) to see what is best to do.

Glad you at least know why Judith. Wonder why original surgeon could have missed that - makes me wonder if they do and won't say (greed factor as they would have to refund you or do lens replacement)
This is to me a serious matter. Are there more incompetent surgeons now or perhaps just hear about it here as people usually or post if they have an issue.
Sorry you ate having to go through this. Hope you find a skillful surgeon to correct the lens.

thanks, @Sue.An2, I hope so too! Am happy to be referred on.... not sure i would like the same surgeon doing the repair. It may not be his fault for all i know, but I would be even more anxious after this!

sorry to hear that, but also glad you were able to find the cause

May not be his fault as things happen but hard to reason why he couldn't have seen lens was tilted.
Yes do go see and have someone else do the lens exchange - they require a more skilled surgeon than straight initial cataract surgery. Wish you well Judith.

Yes please see someone as Julielyn suggested as it appears it coukd be lens isn't centered.
Other possible explanation is your pupil is dilating beyond IOL which is 6mm. A few are in that situation.

Until I had a second opinion and an IOL exchange I also had double images, ghosting and add to that graffiti instead of words. Of course my surgery was a month ago and every day improves but there are no more double images, or side shadows, still need improvement but the doctor said after IOL exchange expect up to 3 months recovery. Hope you get a second opinion, what type of lenses did you get? I had one eye ok and the lens was only for astigmatism near and far so I still use glasses although that has some improvement but we will see...

Hi @elizabeth87225, looks like I might have to have mine exchanged as it is tilted, unless they can move it in situ. Waiting for consultant appointment to decide.

Yes Judith, one statement my IOL exchange surgeon said, is that although I had the surgery 6 months earlier the lens popped out like it had just been placed, I wonder if not only the lens that was incorrect but that the lens had moved, I do not know. I am seeing much better but its only been a month since I had my exchange and I did choose the trifocals since my other eye had a lens to correct astigmatism so I will need reading glasses which is fine. I just wanted lenses that would allow me to see near and far. I still need drops for two weeks more and I have to use to wetting drops which help a lot. I am so glad the found what was wrong, I spent 6 months trying to find out what was happening.

My doctor was Dr. Shatz who has a clinic :Sight Trust in Sunrise Florida. I went there after reading about Julielynn with her IOL exchanges I felt I had to look into him. As I explained, I was seeing double and seeing side images and graffiti. He told me he would not do the surgery unless he could really improve my eyesight, he would get reports from my internist, retina doctor and cardiologist in addition to the first surgery records and feel he could significantly improve my vision. That made me feel I could trust him. His care and staff were great and I am very happy . I had a toric astigmatism lens on the other eye, so I did the same on the new surgery. It has been a month since the surgery so I am still recovering. I was told that for exchange it can take three months.

in my case its been 2 months since the surgery, my eyes are much better since there is no graffiti but I will need reading glasses since I had chosen o toric lenses for astigmatism for the other eye and I felt trifocals might not work for only one eye (my brother in law tried that and he was not happy). My vision when I use both eyes is great but the right eye is still recovering and I have noticed when I drive the shape of cars in the distance changes as they move far away (a block or so) and sometimes seems to be gone so I am going to have my macula doctor check this and an optometrist check my eyes too. They were wondering if it was my macula but in the last 4 years I have never had this problem. Bunching and merging of letters, and , graffity happened after the first surgery and now that graffity is gone and bunching is almost gone this problen is a little scary to have road sings and cars bending. Maybe its too soon , they say second surgeries in IOL exchanges take longer, in some cases 3 to 6 months. Lets hope so.
