Post surgery visual distubance... normal or not?

Had cataract surgery two weeks ago, eye seems to be healing but having odd side effects.

  1. Now have a 45 degree slice of halo around bright lights when in the dark. I can see my eye opening and closing over it. Also an almost horizontal bar of light jetting off from the top of that.
  2. Ghosting in operated eye which appears to be a reflection of any light source, window, light, mirror, screen. the image appears to be projected slightly in front of and to the left and down of the actual object. The accumulation of these images in a brightly lit supermarker make depth perception and orientation difficult. Makes me feel light headed.
  3. double images, probably related to the ghosting, but separate images whereas the ghosting is an extension of the image.
  4. Lots of brown floaters, very annoying, hopefully that one is normal. not sure about others though.

Any one else had these symptoms and if so what was causing it? Have had monofocal lens put in on the NHS so no discussion about lens choices!

Here's a picture of the partial halo as best I can explain it.

judith, have you had these symptoms from the beginning ( immediately after surgery) or was this a gradual thing happening over time? if you had the ghosting images from the start, the lens was tilted during surgery, if your symptoms appeared during recovery, then the lens slipped.

for me, it was from the git-go...so surgery wasn't successful like the first surgeon proclaimed. your records can prove this...complaints to the staff of ghosting images etc. what your chart numbers prove ( reading 20/50 etc)

my first surgeon did 3 surgeries on me, because i believed his hyped up attitude that he could fix, and exchange was "free" ...in the end, first surgeon screwed up exchange worse than the original iol...

both right eye iols were tilted...( i think he was left handed) so my advice is to find a qualified highly experienced exchange surgeon even if they will just move the iol into the correct position

your recovery should be much more intense, as in, do your very best to rest and not bend down or lift any heavy objects for at least one week. my surgerical team insisted that i do basically nothing for one week, until my follow appointment so they could see how well i am healing. imagine a cut, and how long it takes for new skin to grow, it takes just as long if not longer for the haptic to attach itself . i wore my eye cup for one week, followed drop instructions to the T, ate well, rested a lot, and did my best to stay positive, to grant myself the best possible environment for the best possible visual outcome. it was my last chance to get great vision and i took it seriously. today i see 20/20 with both eyes for near and far vision ( 20/25 individually with a slight astigmatism in right eye that had 3 surgeries, well 4 if you include lasik) i chose the restor 3.0 multifocal lenses, and am happy with results and new dr.

    good luck to you

Thanks @julielyn, I've had the problem from the get-go. I had no idea that wasn't normal to start with as it is my first (and hopefully only) eye to have to undergo this procedure. I have just phoned the surgeon's secretary and I am being referred to another surgeon at Bristol eye Hospital (only because he can see me quicker there than at the place I had the op) so things are getting going at last. Apparently my surgeon wants the correction done asap. I hope there won't be any trouble with it this time and I can get it sorted out. If it wasnt for the double vision and light arcs which are apparently the reflection from the edge of the misplaced lens, I would be able to see really well. As it is the interference of the double vision impedes this. Thanks for your response, it helps to know I am not the only one with this problem. I am so glad you had a good resolution to your complications!

in my case its been 2 months since the surgery, my eyes are much better since there is no graffiti but I will need reading glasses since I had chosen o toric lenses for astigmatism for the other eye and I felt trifocals might not work for only one eye (my brother in law tried that and he was not happy). My vision when I use both eyes is great but the right eye is still recovering and I have noticed when I drive the shape of cars in the distance changes as they move far away (a block or so) and sometimes seems to be gone so I am going to have my macula doctor check this and an optometrist check my eyes too. They were wondering if it was my macula but in the last 4 years I have never had this problem. Bunching and merging of letters, and , graffity happened after the first surgery and now that graffity is gone and bunching is almost gone this problen is a little scary to have road sings and cars bending. Maybe its too soon , they say second surgeries in IOL exchanges take longer, in some cases 3 to 6 months. Lets hope so.

Update: Saw visceral surgeon. Due to inadequate structural support, the IOL has to be replaced, either with a larger lens if the lens bag is intact, or attached to the back of the eye if it is not. Longer more complicated operation potentially, about an hour he said. Have to wait now for appointment, his list is busy as we are now back with NHS eye hospital in Bristol rather than the private clinic the NHS originally sent us to, so will be at least november if not later.
