Posterior repair for a rectocele

Posted , 63 users are following.

I am going into hospital next week for a posterior repair to hopefully sort out the rectocele I have had for the last year.

I would be grateful for any information and comments from anyone who has undergone this procedure.

I am very nervous and embarrassed about the whole thing. I will definately leave comments on my experience once it is over.

I had this procedure done on feb 11.  I am finally feeling normal again, what is it now 7 weeks out. I dont know if you are in the UK or states but from what i've seen those in the UK do better, less pain, because of the hospital stay, the states should do the same because sending someone home to recover is horrible, the pain was excruciating, sorry to say. I went back to work in a week and did so in pain, bowel movements began right away but very very painful, hard to do in a public restroom.  I had no bleeding after the second day, which was good, you really have to watch what you eat for the first few weeks after because bms will have to pass by the surgery area thereby irritating it.  My dr saw me at 6 weeks and said in another 6 weeks I'll be all healed down there.  I honestly feel like I am now at 7.  Im so glad its all behind me, no pun, but I will say I am glad I did it if all will be good now, the pain was horrible, wont lie, take the heavy duty meds, take sitz baths, use calmoseptine cream (can get from drug store, usually have to order, no scrip) to numb your butt or bum depending if you are from the UK. LOL. My rectocele stopped me from having intercourse since it was bulging into wall of vagina, I CANNOT wait to have a normal sex life again.  Good luck to you, dont life anything heavy either, not worth undoing what your going to have done.

Thank you gail68093.  I do live in the US and was only in the hospital overnight.  I have had more soreness from the rectocele than I have from all of the 4 or 5 hysterectomy incisions.

I am 51 and had rectocele surgery and perineo repair 4 days ago june,3,2015

Had a wonderful surgeon in new jersey that I found, even though I live in virginia beach, virginia.

Everything went well, surgery took approx 2 hours and was done outpatient.

I work as an anesthesia/surgical assistant and am on my feet all day at a very busy oral/maxillofacial surgery office.

I took 2 weeks off of work but not sure that will be enough.......

Any of you ladies have advice for me?

Your advice will be much appreciated.

      Hi Martina,

I'm curious about how you are feeling now. I'm 50 and have 5 children...which is what apparently contributed to the rectocele smile I'm having surgery July 14 th for the rectocele and for TVT. I read so many horror stories yet spoke to someone I met the other day who had an anterior and posterior repair and she said she had barely any pain and although she didn't do much heavy work, she felt she resumed normal life fairly quickly.

I would love to hear your point of view. Some people say they had a swollen stomach and couldn't sit...I had episiotomies with my babies and don't remember it being all that bad to be honest.

      i hope you're feeling well.

I am 8 days post op and dont think the surgery was too bad. Had a excellent surgeon and travelled 6 hours one way to see him and had surgery done there. Still sore but managed with ibuprofen 800mg and tyelenol3. I have pain and pressure when im on my feet for a little while though and am laying down and sitting alot so I heal. Bowel movements are painful and am opting to take stool softners to help. I had rectolele and a perinial repair. The perinial repair is doing well too. Shoers only for 6 weeks no baths.

My surgeon was Dr Marc Pelosi III in Bayonne New Jersey

I dont think I will be ready to return to work after 2 weeks, I stand all day... assisting an oral surgeon.

Thought I would be ok but pretty sure I wont be that quick.

      Hope this helps.

I am 24 hrs out of surgery state side. Had an A & P (Hysterocele/Rectocele) and Ablation. Took a little longer than expected as my tissue was extremely thin. My OR time was long as I don"t wake up fast then BP dropped my first potty visit. This was out patient but still in the hospital for a total of 9 hours(2 hrs surgery/pathology then 7 hrs recovery). Other than a constant path to the bathroom I have felt pretty well. Doc says expect 4 to 6 weeks for recovery.

My husband has had 2 crainiotomies (brain tumors) and my recovery may be longer. We are blessed as God has placed us withgreat medical people.

This forum has been wonderful, I read many experiences before my surgery making me very informed. Thank you all for sharing.

I just had the rectaseal operation via spinal spinal block. All went well except by next afternoon I had a raging fever of 103 degrees celciius. The doctor determined I had an infection and put me on an antibiotic and kept me overnight. By next morning things hadn't much improved and and the catheter was irritating as hell. Causing more pain than helping. Told them to remove or I would. They came and removed and ll and behold, I also had a UTI. They added a third antibiotic to regimen to help heal all infections. Needless to say things did not go smoothly for me. It's extremely painful to urinate. I can pass stool ok due to Linzess it completely softens my stool and makes sure that my system is purged of stool daily. I have ZiBS with Constipation and this medicine has been a godsend. Haven't gotten past the pain so don't know what to say there. Good luck.

I am 6 days post anterior and posterior repair. The first 5 days were horrendous but i feel a lot better today after having first BM yesterday (it was ridiculously sore but once it was over i immediately felt better). Still sore but went for a walk today. If suffering from constipation then i would increase dosage a bit if nothing happening after 4 days. It does get better.

I have now at last been diagnosed with this after years of knowing something was wrong but the doctor is trying to say I shouldn't have the op, but instead try a pessery which I don't think is helping. Also can anyone tell me if they had skin problems like acne or rosasha along with the other problems

I am due to have my op in a few weeks and am now getting worried. My main concern is how ill will I feel afterwards as i have a lively six tear old and a horse to look after although everyone says that they will help. I know that i will not be able to lift but will I be able to lay on sofa keeping an eye on everything or will I be in a lot of pain?

Hi Susan. I had a rectocele repair 4 weeks ago. I went home the same day but regretted it as the pain was horrendous the next morning. Had to send my husband to get codeine which did help. Given the extent of your surgery you should stay in hospital if only for the pain relief. I have found recovery slow and frustrating. Still getting discomfort and bowels are a problem still. Seeing my consultant in 3 weeks but going back to work in 2 if able. Hope your surgery goes well.
