Posterior vs. Anterior would you do the same surgery again?

Hi all,

New to this site. I am 57 and in need of a THR. I am interested in which procedure you had and if you are happy with results, or wish you had done the other. I live an active lifestyle and am not overweight.

Thanks!

Kristen

Hi Kristen, I had a posterior six weeks ago. Brilliant. Some swelling some bruising but really straight forward. I was walking un aided after 4 weeks pain free.

    Hi Kristen,

I've had both hips replaced using the anterior procedure. The first one last December and the second four weeks ago.

I have been able to walk unaided indoors for two weeks and have just done my second day outside walking unaided for a kilometre each time.

I have no operation pain, just a bit of muscle ache after a while but I don't need painkillers.

I can sleep on either side and unlike the posterior approaches amongst us, don't need a special toilet seat.

Obviously I can't give any comparison between the two procedures and a lot depends on age, weight, activity etc. I am 67 years old, 5'7" tall and 64 kilos, and am moderately active.

I am very happy with my results and would do the same again if I had to.

Good to hear since I am a side sleeper. It is a lot to consider.

Personally, the outcome of a good posterior beats a bad anterior any day.

I don't really care exactly where the scar is, or (to some extent) how long it takes to recover. What matters to me is that it is done well and that I can recover from the previous painful state.

Sadly, I had a bad posterior - I am waiting to see my new surgeon in a couple of months to see what the future holds for me.

      Hi Graham,

Sorry to hear your surgery didn't go well.

I, too, don't care about the scar location....just want to make certain the procedure goes well. The positive of the Internet is that I found this forum, the negative is that I find so much conflicting info regarding the 2 procedures...obviously each side presenting their best case. I don't want one leg to be shorter than the other, or deal with major muscle and nerve issues.

Good luck with your next appointment.

I'm not really sure which I had.  The scar is all up the side of my hip, with a slight curve round towards my bottom, so I am guessing that is a posterior hip replacement.

I think it may have been complicated by an attempted repair I had in April, as the scar connects with one of the three smaller scars where the bolts were put in.

My surgeon didn't give me an option on the type, it was just agreed that a hip replacement was the only option.

      Hi Adam,

Given that you had an attempted repair, would you do the THR without the repair if you had to do it all over again?

    Hi Kristen

I had left hip posterior in 2014 and my right hip posterior is now six weeks old now.

Both ops done very well and both are Exeter hips partially cemented.

i feel really good and surgeon was pleased with my progress today.

half the battle is getting a good surgeon and good physio afterwards and do as you are told. Good luck you won't regret it.

I so agree about the surgeon Polly!

The good news is of the 4 recommended to my by the sports or how specialist, the surgeon I selected has operated on my personal physician twice. He had the same options as me and I respect him and am certain he did his homework on choosing a surgeon.

Glad to hear recovery is going well!

Hi, I'm the same age as you. Had a posterior, I think, 9 weeks ago. It was cementless. I didn't have a choice about anterior/posterior. I was on something called enhanced recovery, spinal injection, up the same day, out on day 2. It all went really well. My surgeon says I'll be fine doing pretty much anything, including skiing, though he doesn't advise running long distance.(okay to run for the bus!) Wishing you all the best.

      Hi Judith,

So glad to hear your recovery is going well. Thank you for your feedback. I'll keep you posted after I meet with the surgeon.

I did both hips on 1/25/16 via the Anterior approach (cementless). The doctor described both types and recomends the anterior when you are a candidate for it. I was in the hospital for three days and in PT for another three days. I used a walker for the first week home and then switched to two canes. I was able to return to work after three weeks. The Anterior, when done by an experienced surgeon, is supposed to have a faster recovery and less risk of dislocation
