Pre-op

Hi all.

Does anyone know how long a pre-op lasts? Does it actually run out?

I had my pre-op on 30th Dec with surgery scheduled for the 4th Feb, I got cancelled until the 9th Feb now I've been cancelled again until 10th March so I'm wondering if I'll have to go and have another pre-op

    Hi Joanne

I think it is about 3 months too, especially if you had no "red flags"' at your pre op. But again please try nor to worry if they have to do any tests it may be like Hogtog (Graham) says perhaps if any need a re-test it may be the MRSA which is just a simple test.

I sincerely hope you dont have another cancellation. As you have had 2 it is much less likely but I agree that a taking a cancellation date is still a good idea (no matter what they say).

      Thank you Linett.

This is my 4th cancellation in total. It's been going on since May last year. I'm sure I'll get there in the end lol

Oh my that is horrendous, why on earth have they cancelled you so many times? I was only cancelled once and know the stress and upset that caused...sorry it is taking so long for this to happen for you.

      Hi Rose

Yes it's been a bit of a nightmare. I was going to have them done at my local hospital but got cancelled the night before on 2 occasions, then they wouldn't give me another date, I rang for 2 weeks asking for a new date but they just kept saying "we have to wait for hospital manager to decide". I decided to ring one more time & the wait list secretary said all she does is cancel appointments & she can't remember the last time my surgeon actually did any surgery. So I decided to get referred to a different hospital (that's why it's 350 miles away). Now I've been cancelled twice by them.

Oh that is terrible and in the meantime I am assuming you are left in pain too. So sorry to hear this, really sorry. It must be so stressful for you. I hope this time it goes ahead without delay. I saw on the news the other day lots of hip replacements have been cancelled. Hang there, at some point it will happen.

Yes both hips are bone on bone, the backache that comes hand in hand with it is also horrendous, it effects absolutely everything, work suffers, family life suffers. Just everyday tasks are impossible.

I was so upset to read about what happened to you after you had your operation, its just completely shocking!

I understand completely where you are coming from with the effects of the bone on bone and the pain, it is so difficult to deal with. I found it impossible in the end to even continue with the veneer of normal life, the pain, lack of sleep, lack of movement, it all becomes too much. I look back now and wonder how I put with it for so long, but you will get there Joanne. I found making plans for when I was fixed really helped me focus on something beyond what I was experiencing. Cancelling things that were not essential, making time to rest and generally trying to optimise my time. I feel for you so much. Waiting is difficult because you can't get on with things or plan, you know it is coming.

I would say the winter is not an ideal time AT ALL for having a hip replacement though. If I had my time again I would be choosing the spring or summer or even early autumn. Being able to exercise outside and walking etc has been really difficult with the endless rain and wind or ice, the constant colds and flus, and a tummy bug was really horrible after my operation (I felt my wound was going to burst!) and every sneeze was so painful. The hospitals are overflowing with sick people. The best thing about your delay will be the season change, which will allow you to walk for miles in the mild spring sunshine and the inspiration to get well for summer.

The hospital night was pretty grim, partially  because the nurses were so over stretched, and partially the sheer difficulty dealing with being so ill after just having my hip replaced. Next time, I will ask for an extended spinal and avoid the opiates altogether. I managed last time, so will do that this time. The support on here really did help to make me feel better, and to know the chances of something happening like that again are so slim. The following day you couldn't move for nurses in my room trying to help, so clearly a night time issue. I am now in touch with the hospital about it, and will push for something to change, as I would like to go back to my old surgeon if possible.

Lets hope your date will soon be here. The operation itself is okay isn't it, the waiting really is not. I hope for you, it will be over soon. Please keep us posted.

      Hi Rose

Yes you are totally right, it was a bit of a shock last night to be cancelled again but this morning I'm feeling more positive, like you say, March will be a much better time for recovering. I've also spoke to the surgeons pa today and told him about my X-rays being 13 months old, he's going to arrange new X-rays and a CAT scan. So maybe these things just happen for a reason.

I didn't realise you could ask for an extended spinal and miss out the opiates. That sounds exactly the right way to go to avoid what happened to you the last time! Do you have to have your other hip done soon?

      Joanne,

Apart from the disappointment at the delay, March will be a much better time to recover, much better weather (hopefully) than the rain and gales we have now.

      Best wishes

Mines was cancelled twice due to complications with my blood and a trace of mrsa. Did they give you reasons for cancelling? Its not like them just to keep cancelling for no reason to go with it? Did your first pre op come back fine?

      Hi Lors

The first & second was cancelled because there was no beds. The third because of the last strikes and it was an audit day and the fourth because there is an emergency (on the 9th Feb) and they needed my slot.

I'm pleased everything got cleared up for you and you eventually got it done x

Oh god thats rubbish what a shame its horrible being cancelled. I cried the first time as it was the night before l was to be admitted that l had traces of mrsa in my throat. I was in shock that l had this they have me an mrsa kit and sent me away for a week. They never re-tested me as the kit was enough. But ever since then l have been paranoid about germs l wash my hand after everything l have never been near a hospital to catch this but they said it was very common and 40% of people carry it but don't realise as there is no symtoms but because l was going for surgery they had to get rid of it and be safe which was fair enough. Then before my second app my surgeon caĺled me to tell me there was an issue with the platlets in my blood they were borderline again l cried l said not again but he decided to still get me in and test my blood before the op. Which luckily was ok to go ahead. This time l am due to go for my 2nd hip l am doing everything to make sure my platlets are high with taking everything that helps my platlet level. So fingers crossed that l have no mrsa and my blood is fine.

I am sorry to hear about your cancelations l know how bad it makes you feel

      Hi Laura

I can imagine you was shocked to find out you had traces of mrsa! To be cancelled so close to surgery is no joke because you have to mentally prepare as well as prepare practically as well. It takes some doing when you will be out of action for about 6 weeks.

I can remember someone on this forum being cancelled when they was in their gown talking to the anaesthetist minutes from going into surgery. The surgeon had a family emergency and literally had to bolt. These things happen but I really felt for her.

I hope everything goes smoothly on your next surgery, it sounds like you are doing everything you can to prevent it happening again.
