Can't hardly walk or function. I tried to curl up in bed and just rest, but that is to uncomfortable too...Don't know how I am going to stand it until next Friday morning....UGG.....guess I just have to hang in their....no other choice...Sorry for venting here.....I know so many of you have it way worse than I do.....Thanks for listening....Barb

Hey Barb, ouch I hear you , I'm 9 days post op, right THR , THEY took me off the Ibuprofen 14 days before surgery, 800 mg ibuprofen about every 6 hours / it helped a lot / Tylenol and Tramadol didn't / Good luck with your surgery, haven't they given you something else for pain? Are you on crutches? I couldn't walk at all without them for about a month before surgery. Was hard to find any position to get away from the pain before surgery. The hip is still sore/different type of pain but getting better daily. You hang in there.

Thanks Dave, and Yikes! 14 days ahead of time....Wow thank goodness mine is only a week ahead of time. Yeah, Tylenol, Tramadol just don't get it. I have been taking Tramadol for years for my OA and honestly can't say it does any good. No they didn't give me anything else for the pain, but I did have some Hydrocodone left over from my last surgery rthr 11 weeks ago and took one of those last night. At least I did finally get some sleep. Just like you described hurting all over and no position that doesn't hurt. Can't sit, stand, lay or definitely walk without pain. I am on the verge or going back to my crutches to see if it helps me to be able to get around any better or else the dang walker again ( I hate using a walker), and right at the moment have been still trying to get around with my cane. Hurting so bad though already thought I better go back to the crutches.
9 days post op, yes you are really early in the recovery. It starts getting better around week two so you hang in there also. Yes, different kind of pain but remember at least that kind of pain will heal and eventually go away...Hope you feel better soon....Barb

Megan, your post helped me so much, I am wondering what will the pain feel like when I wake up in two days after my surgery which is Tuesday. You make me feel better like I won't wake up with this escruciating pain I sure am praying I feel like I'm on the bad side of hell right now without that anti-inflammatory Med that is kept me going for the last few months it's been a nightmare since ai had to stop them for surgery Tuesday.
Barb sending you good mojo and healing prayers, wish you were here with me!!

Aww Annette they will keep your pain under control. I was given a morphine pump to use if needed. I didn't even use it as much as they said I could have. When you wake up of course at first you will be groggy, and doze on and off....at least I did. I remember my husband coming in to talk to me and I told him to go ahead and go home and I dozed off again. Most of the first afternoon and night I was dozing on and off. Where I had mine done, and am having my next one done they came in real early to wake you up. We had to get dressed and ready for PT...I was really worried about that! They actually wheeled all of us who had thr's the day before into the therapy room in our beds...I thought oh so that isn't so bad...lol We were instructed on how not to move and shown some exercises, nothing too difficult and then told to do so many of each one, the laying down exercises. Then we each were helped out of bed and given walkers and shown some standing exercises, again nothing that bad. They rolled us all back to our rooms and when the nurses came in we had our walkers now and they told us if we were able we needed to try to walk to the bathroom or do a little walking. Was a little hard to do on my own and seems I always had some help because I had the leg pumps on each leg (not sure of the technical name), and those actually helped my legs feel better. My pain was pretty much under control, and while I wasn't running any race I was doing pretty good. Would also like to state that I was in surgery for almost 4 hours most hip replacements are a lot faster than that, is kind of unusual for it to take that long. That and along with having the fracture and not being able to bear full weight on that leg also made progress more difficult, but didn't seem to hinder me any, as I was happy with my progress and happy that I wasn't hurting like before the surgery. You will be fine Annette, I know it is super frightening, nerve racking to say the least. Hang in there friend, you will feel so much better soon...Hugs....Barb

Thanks Barb, I laughed when they said they will be doing ( my surgeon) 5 that day and be done by 1-1:30 jeez! Normlly it is 45 ins to 1.5 hr for each. They mentioned a group session, not sure if I will be in one night, they say " You are it and and young and will most likely go home the next day " yikes. Thank you for everything i am starting to find real peace, I think I know I need my head in the right place. xoxoxo hope you are soudly sleeping. See you on FB

Hey Annette / just wanted to wish you the best / your surgery is Tuesday isn't it ? / I had RTHR 10 days ago and getting better all the time. Not much pain after surgery / was up and walking 2 hours out of surgery. Kinda sore first 3-4 days home but so much better than the pain before ! I heard my surgeon did max five a day but only 2 or 3 days a week. Was glad that mine was the first of the day ! You will be so thankful the pain is gone ! I had both knees done June/Sept 2014, Best thing I ever did, can't wait to get this hip back to 100% / You will do great! Dave 63380

Glad it helped you, the only pain I had was discomfort but that's bond to happen after a major op. When I woke up from my I never felt anything as they gave me a jag into my right hip before I went to sleep but the day after I felt it but they gave me stronger meds they gave me morphine in the morning and night but now I am off them I have cut down my meds as now I don't have any pain I only take them morning and night. The pain you have experience now will completely go away.
Wish you all the best! Keep us posted

oh barb,
I am so sorry that you are in so much pain .... I don't understand why you are taking off Ibuprofen and not replace it with other pain meds- to be honest, nothing really helped anymore but I think not taking them would have been unbearable - I thought that the OA pain pre-op 2nd THR was way worse than with 1st ...I wanted my leg to be chopped off or something -
I am not helping here, am I -
My heart goes out to you ... Friday can't come soon enough, I know, but the wait is almost over, darling
sending love, light an healing
big warm hug

Thanks renee and you did help. You described exactly how it feels. I know my right one was "horrible" according to the doctors but I sure don't remember it hurting as bad as this one! It hasn't been that many weeks since my rthr and I would certainly remember if it hurt this bad. No nothing really takes all the pain away at all but at least the Ibuprofin 600's did make it more bearable. They didn't give me anything else for pain again, except I already take Tramadol which seems to do nothing for it either. I had a few Hydrocodone left from my rthr and I took one of those last night, and at least I did finally get a little sleep. Big warm hugs back to you....Barb

Hi Ann / 9 days post RTHR / I was taken off of 800mg ibuprofen 14 days before surgery/replaced with 500 mg Tylenol/had Tramadol with the Ibuprofen but was never told to discontinue that / still have some never thought it worked very well / the Ibuprofen is a blood thinner that's why you stop it before surgery 1-2 weeks / NOT suggesting you do anything without Dr. Approval of course, but the pain is tough to deal with. Everything I've ever taken just takes the "edge off" to varying degrees. Even if you just take Tylenol it helps a little. Tramadol was NOT on the list of don't take before surgery drugs, at least not on the list they gave me. Good Luck with your surgery/. DAVE 63380

Wow funny how some doctors make you quit taking the Tramadol also. I take Tramadol but it does nothing for me, maybe because I have taken it for so many years for my OA. I can miss my Ibuprofin though and really tell a big difference. At this point nothing takes the pain away all the way but does make it a little more bearable. Not having something that helps us is terrible! I understand why we have to go off of it, but you would think that their would be an alternative that would help. I was told last time and this time to take acetaminiphen (Tylenol) instead...It just doesn't help! You hand in there too...You are right behind me on this. Keep me posted on how you are doing. Is this your first thr? Will be the second for me had my rthr 11 weeks ago...Now going in for the left..Good luck and hugs...Barb

Hi Ann - my heart goes out to you. Second time around (me too in Sept), but you must also still be getting used to life with your good man. I am so sorry. Have you mobilized your friends to help with care, tasks and keeping your spirits up? Please don't stint on this - I am sure they would want to give their support. ...even if you may feel that they have helped since your husband passed. Good friends are always happy to show their love.
I wish I could send you more than virtual hugs ... but how about some of Renée's big warm ones ..Xxxx

I wonder how your friends might react if you asked one or more to sleep over with you or the first week or so ...
Worth asking I think ... piece of mind and comfort for you.
Hugs,
Linda

oh Ann I am so sorry to hear that. I hope you have some friends or family for support and help. It is rough even to go through when not alone, can't imagine it alone. Please know that their are many caring people here should you need a shoulder....Still not the same as the actual care and support of a loved one. Please know you are in my prayers. Wishing the best to you....Hugs....Barb

Tramadol wasn't on my list either and believe me it is a long list. I looked it over carefully to make sure. My last surgery and this time it wasn't on the list and I was never told I had to quit taking it. It doesn't do much for me even though I continue to take it, and have taken it for years for my OA. I sure miss my Ibuprofin 600's though....you just don't realize how much something like that helps until you can't take it...Hang in there Dave....

my sincere condolences with the loss of your partner - I am so sorry to hear this - there is not much I can say to make things easier - having friends close by is important -
I live alone and had 2 THR surgeries ... it is doable but sort of lonely at times - this forum has been my support group and made me feel less alone --- so come here anytime okay?
big warm hug

Unfortunately my best friend round the corner has a invalid husband so can't leave him, but she is at the other end of the phone.

So sorry for your loss. I am amazed how people cope without a close partner, I know I am greatly indebtted to my wife for her care and support through the entire process, before, during and after the operations.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery
