Pred & vaccinations

My surgery has offered me a shingles vaccination but when I checked it looked as if both live and dead vaccines don’t mix with Pred. Anyone had experience of this while taking Pred? Seeing my GP next week abd I like to be forewarned! He’s lovely but doesn’t know everything!

I wouldn't touch either of the shingles vaccinations with a bargepole!

This is about the new one, Shingrix, which isn't available in Europe yet:

But somewhere at the back of my mind is something else about the new one that made me feel it was NOT a good idea for us.
If one of the listed adverse events is PMR - and it is for both - I don't think it is advisable for someone who already has it.
I think this must be the other thing:

This is for patients with lupus but there is a warning they are concerned that for patients with compromised immune systems it may really cause overload. As I asked - what is the situation for any other autoimmune disorders?

Hi Celia, our Doctors surgery won't give us shingles vaccinations if we are on pred, they definitely consider it unsafe.

For what it's worth, my Primary Care Physician recommended that i get the new Shingrix, but said to run it by my Rheum first. He also thought it was a good idea. I'm in the US. I got the first part a couple of weeks ago.

On the UK NHS site re Prednisolone
"Taking prednisolone lowers your immune system. If you have a 'live' vaccine, like the shingles vaccine, while you are taking prednisolone your immune system might not be able to handle it. This may lead to an infection. Inactive vaccinations, like the flu vaccine, are safe."

I believe that the older shingles vaccine was live, but the new Shingrix is not a live virus.

My husband seemed to react to his Shingrix vaccination for a day or two although he's not home right now for me to ask the details. I didn't get it as I never had chicken pox, although my doctor thought I should get it anyway saying, "Everyone has had chicken pox" ! Literature indicates many side effects which can be pretty heavy duty (fever over 39C, muscles aches) and a long list of other things should all clear up in two or three days.

He’s wrong. Another chicken-free 63 y.o. over here. In fact, I never had any child hood diseases and for what it’s worth, never got my wisdom teeth. 👍

Haha! I "might" have had mumps, no one seemed sure, not even physician father, and also german measles as a infant. But I used to catch every cold bug going after moving to a cold northern country at age six. And I have all my wisdom teeth (yes, still have them).

I wouldn't touch any jabs, especially with PMR. Not worth rocking the boat.
