Pressure in head within nose cavity

Posted , 51 users are following.

I have had this pressure that eminates from the sinus or cavities behind the nose for about 4 months now. It started gradually and now is a constant pressure that causes lightheadindness / dizziness and headaches. it gets worse when I move or do anything physical, especially when I move my head down. I know it is trapped air that is causing the problem, it's as if i have sinusitus and i'm on a plan. Popping my ears helps reduce the pressure for a few minutes but it tends to build back up again. 4 weeks ago whilst feeling particularly pressurised I popped my ears whilst yawning and pulling my left ear, what happened next doctors have a hard time believing. Loads of air came out of my left ear, as if like sticking a nail in a bike tire. This lasted for between 20-30 seconds. afterwards, I felt great, no head pressure, no headaches, no dizziness. I think this could well be a breakthrough for a lot of head pressure cases I read on the net. For that day I had my life back, sadly the next day it just seemed to build up again. The problem is that there doesn't seem to be much research out there on this and it is very hard to live with it. I would say its like a constant uncomfortableness and pain about 3/4 out of 10. When moving this increases and I have had some really bad 10 out of 10 headaches. i'm interested in other people who have experienced similar sympotoms and what the outcome was. This does seem curable, but ENTs don't seem to know anything about it. I'm positive this can get resolved in the future but its up to people who are suffering with this to get this condition out there and into public knowledge.

Did anyone find the reason for this? I'm experiencing the same and doctors dont know what it is. I need help!!

Ditto to the above, anyone had an accurate diagnosis yet?

I have a chronic headache, lightheaded when walking, slightly stiff neck, bridge of nose varies from brief spells of feeling normal and then feeling like it has been punched (but does not hurt when touched), eyesight prescription has worsened and I have 'white noise' chronic tinnitus in both ears. The initial symptoms were inflamed lymph nodes at the top of my neck / under jawline.

Currently awaiting result of an MRI scan of my brain.

Thanks in advance for any light that someone can shed on this.

hey all if its helpful i was diagnosed with midfacial segment pain or atypical trigeminal neuralgia with my neurologist. not much research done on it but explains the nose, forehead and eye pressure without having real sinus issues hope everyone gets better!!

I too have the same symptoms. I am guilty of blowing my nose too hard in the morning and as a result, now have constant pain underneath the top of my nose, my eye always feels swollen and i have a constant dizziness that never goes away. I have had all the usual scans etc and show nothing up. This sounds crazy but hitting the top of my nose, the bridge, gives me relief for a couple of seconds and then it all comes back again. It feels like something inside needs to release but never does. I hope one day someone can find out what is causing this as i have had this now for 29 years. It would be nice to wake up, not feel dizzy and have no pressure, headaches or pain.

I was prescribed 'Mometasone Fluroate' nasal spray and my sinus issues have cleared up. I still have chronic tinnitus, but my balance seems to be improving. I had a neck X-ray which showed some spondylitic effects due to age/wear and I'm seeing a physiotherapist to see if neck exercises and heat pads help. I suspect the balance and tinnitus are inner-ear related issues, but I'm told that issues with the cervical spine can result in my symptoms. We'll see.

Anyway, I can recommend giving the nasal spray a try.

Hey! So your MRI came back normal? I'm waiting to be scheduled for one. How have you improved since treatment? Has anything else helped you?

I have had the same problem since early June 2019 and have been suffering since then. I feel there is air trapped in my sinus which moves around and I also get a lot of pressure on my upper eyes that causes dizziness and discomfort. I cannot explain it in words...then I would feel it moves down from the eye area towards my nose (sinus)

explained it to GP she says its sinusitis after a viral infection...recommended me to inhale steam and if it doesn't go away In few weeks start taking antibiotics which I did and nothing happened still the same.

Due to the eye pressure and vision distortion I went to see three eye specialist and all came back with nothing wrong with my eye health.

Saw different GP doctors about this symptoms and each came back with different verdicts, "labyrinthitis , vestibular neuritis " its confusing and a living nightmare.

I'm confused and frustrated havent been to work for 3 weeks cannot enjoy my life anymore have brain fog, I even quit 25 years of smoking just to be on the safe side ....but no improvement yet...I've had few good days where I felt it went away but comes back the following day with a new ignition.

I'll be going to see a ENT doctor soon not sure if that will help if it doesnt then I'm doing the MRI scan.

I hope there is hope out there I hope there is some cure for this bizarre disease or whatever you wanna call it, coz I'm literally giving up.....

      Hello,

I feel the same way. ENT's are your best bet though. Try Pseudoephedrine , it is the only thing that gives me some relief. It is definitely a pressure sinus issue. Mri's do not show everything- ask about a test to check your ear pressure for eustachian tube dysfunction as it causes all types of sinus pressure issues. Also, ask about a nasal endoscopy as well. I am having both of these done soon as I have been suffering on and off for about a year and a half. The dizziness is the worst part, along with the pressure.

I also just bought a humidifier to try as well. Also check into possible allergens-do an allergy test.

Good luck!! This feeling is very maddening, no you're not alone!

I have the same issues. Did you ever get the MRI? Any relief found?

      Hi kaylee,

After 4 months of hell it turns out there was mucusal thickening in my ethmoid sinus air cells, and because ethmoid is so close to the eyes it causes pressure and issues with vision.

everything showed on my CT scan.

Get a scan done ASAP, wether it's a CT or an MRI.

I'm not fully recovered yet, but do feel better than June. I have another appointment with the ENT soon in December if it doesnt go away by then, then I'm considering sinus surgery.

      good luck.

I am 100% certain my sinuses are involved. An ENT looked up my nose and at the openings of sinuses with a scope and said he didnt see any infection, though it was mildly irritated. He ordered a sinus CT but they haven't called to schedule it yet (2 weeks later... which is very annoying.) I notice that my sinuses seem to do a light crackling pop sound if I lay down on one side or the other, and this always comes from the top of my nose on either side. I also have a lot of post nasal drip, and taking a decongestant helps to clear it up. What did your treatment consist of? Thanks for responding!

omg I have the same light crackling pop sound too when ever I'm laying in bed.

I have not started any treatments yet....I'm waiting for my ENT appointment and go from there.

describe your vision to me, are you still having issues with them?

Ah, so your symptoms just started to resolve on their own? I'm looking for any relief. Some days I'm good and have minimal symptoms, if any. It always comes back though. I have done two courses of Augmentin antibiotic, and two short courses of steroids. My vision is only slightly blurry in one eye (my right) but only blurry when I feel sinus congestion in my eye/nose area, so it comes and goes. I have seen an eye doctor and they said everything looks good with my eyes. Other symptoms are consistent with sinus infection, though it’s all post nasal drip and nothing coming from my nose. Dizziness but not necessarily vertigo (sometimes) Sometimes I just feel hot and flushed but it goes away. I also get these brain fog episodes where I seem almost detached from reality.

how long have you been like this?

from the sounds of it and since your eyes and vision is involved, it sure does sounds like your ethmoid sinus isuues.

do you also feel the need to pop your ears at all times?

symptoms does get better with time but I still havent found full relief from the pressure around the upper sinus and eyes.

but it is better than June when it all started for me.

Yes! My ears feel clogged often. I pop them when i feel like i need to but it doesnt often help much. I've been like this for 2 months. Started with a crazy virus that hit out of no where and hasnt left yet. I do get some relief with decongestants and Flonase and doing the Neti Pot twice a day. Daily steam showers too. I oddly feel best when I'm on my feet all day walking around outside (maybe something to do with drainage.)

I would highly recommended you to get a CT or MRI done to determine everything...so you can start a appropriate treatment.

This crap does interfere with quality of life and mentally drains you out.

keep me informed of any improvements.

I'll keep you posted here too.

I had a brain and upper spine MRI yesterday and they showed normal results with the exception of mucosal thickening in ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses. Next step is to meet with ENT and discuss treatment.

That's great news, the ENT will try out with steroid nasal spray, and antibiotics to treat the sinus issue most for a month.

what are your visual symptoms currently now,

      are they getting better?

    • Posted

I've been using Flonase for over a month now, so I assume that is what has helped whatever recovery I have had so far. I also do daily neti pot saline flushes and take allergy medication. About a month ago, I finished my second course of antibiotics, which I do not feel have helped me. I have an appointment with an allergist in 2 weeks. My visual problems come and go, but I only have the blurred vision when I have sinus headaches. Once every few days.

are you having sinus issues on both sides?

my right side seems to have resolved...but left ethmoid still bad ...I have been prescribed antibiotics (clarithromycin 500mg) and fluticasone furoate nasal spray for a month by my ENT doc....let's see how it goes.

let me know what your ENT says...keep me updated. good luck.

It's always been mostly my right side, and still is. Improved since I began the nasal spray and neti pot, but not resolved at all. I'll let you know- thanks!

Checking in. Wondering if you have had any relief from the antibiotic and nasal spray combination. Steroid and antibiotic combo doesnt seem to be doing much for me.

      Hi Kaylee,

My right side have resolved it's back to normal now, however left side of my sinus I still feel some little symptoms but feel its Improving very slowly, I can honestly say I do feel much better than last month, and way, way better than September and october....

so I must be healing but on a very slow process.

Be patient it will take a bit of time. try out the meds and spray before anything else.

Kaylee are you still suffering?? I had a ct scan which showed nothing apart from mucosal disease, I have pressure in my ears and around the ears, I can never breathe through my nose properly, my ears are so sensitive and I feel really off balance heavy head, just an overall pressure that seems to originate from my sinuses, to be honest my head doesn't feel normal at all completely off whack! Did you get any relief from the meds?
