Pressure in head within nose cavity

Posted , 51 users are following.

I have had this pressure that eminates from the sinus or cavities behind the nose for about 4 months now. It started gradually and now is a constant pressure that causes lightheadindness / dizziness and headaches. it gets worse when I move or do anything physical, especially when I move my head down. I know it is trapped air that is causing the problem, it's as if i have sinusitus and i'm on a plan. Popping my ears helps reduce the pressure for a few minutes but it tends to build back up again. 4 weeks ago whilst feeling particularly pressurised I popped my ears whilst yawning and pulling my left ear, what happened next doctors have a hard time believing. Loads of air came out of my left ear, as if like sticking a nail in a bike tire. This lasted for between 20-30 seconds. afterwards, I felt great, no head pressure, no headaches, no dizziness. I think this could well be a breakthrough for a lot of head pressure cases I read on the net. For that day I had my life back, sadly the next day it just seemed to build up again. The problem is that there doesn't seem to be much research out there on this and it is very hard to live with it. I would say its like a constant uncomfortableness and pain about 3/4 out of 10. When moving this increases and I have had some really bad 10 out of 10 headaches. i'm interested in other people who have experienced similar sympotoms and what the outcome was. This does seem curable, but ENTs don't seem to know anything about it. I'm positive this can get resolved in the future but its up to people who are suffering with this to get this condition out there and into public knowledge.

    Hi all,

I found this thread a few weeks ago and was very pleased to have found a group that was experiencing the same symptoms and issues that I had. At the same time it was troubling that very few of you have found any sort of solution.

The main symptoms for me have been:

    Constant tiredness

    Headache most days

Feeling of significant & uncomfortable pressure at front of face

    Popping sensation behind nose/eyes

    Constant post-nasal drip

    Dizziness

Brain fog - sometimes bad enough to make working very difficult

    Feeling "jumpy" - sensory overload

Air sometimes escapes from left eye when regulating

Like many people on this forum I was convinced that my problem was with my sinuses, and the first doctor I saw gave me a steroid nasal spray that made no difference. I then saw a different doctor who was convinced that the issue was not sinus related, but was in fact chronic tension headaches. He sent me for a brain MRI just to be sure (all clear), and also prescribed me Amitriptyline. I am pleased to report that after taking this now for about five weeks I am feeling much, much better. I would say a 90% improvement from my hardest days and feeling better all the time. It did take me a couple of weeks to adjust to the drug (feeling tired and groggy particularly for the first few hours of waking, feeling a bit spaced out), and it tended to accentuate some of the symptoms during this time, but then a real improvement that is slowly getting me back to normal.

Anyway, I wanted to post an update to this forum to potentially give some of you hope and maybe even a solution to speak to your doctor about and cure these awful symptoms.

Hi, I have had almost the same experience as you. Very similar symptoms, initially convinced it was sinus-related, then after 6+ months a private neurologist believed it was migrane-related and put me on Amitriptyline.

I have been taking it for about 7-8 weeks, now up to 30mg a day but seeing no improvement. What dose are you on, and is it still working for you?

Do any of you wear glasses or had recent dental surgery or extractions? I had 2 extractions and bone graft on upper right and a root canal on the upper leftI am having extreme pressure behind my nose like my nose will snap due to the pressure, the pressure is getting more intense. It feels like a baloon blowing up behind my nose and then it inflates again, these attacks last for several seconds and then disappear. I have no drip that I know of and there is no mucous. If anything my nose is dry as a bone, too dry and it feels sore because of how dry it is. I recently took antibiotics for a possible infection of my gum, but I wonder if my bone graft has an infection or maybe I have a jaw infection in the bone and that is causing this. I don't know how to get help for this I am seeing a new oral surgeon on the 28th and having a ct scan done of my bone graft to see if anything is wrong there, I am going to see if they can check my sinus as well with the ct. I had the bone graft done in January and it never felt right. I hate it in fact.I urge you to also look at old root canals that may be causing infection in your sinus, I think this is what could be causing mine. I have one old root canal that needs to come out because it failed however I do not have any abscess that I know of. I am on the verge of having all my infected teeth pulled in hopes that this will resolve this god awful pressure behind my nose, I have never felt anything like this in my life. I went to an immunologist because I have low iga and he said to just take amtriptyline to help with the head pressure. I have not done this yet. This is an old antidepressant that they use off label for headaches and other things. I keep thinking I am getting cluster headaches or even TMJ due to having missing teeth.I feel like I'm going nuts. This pressure just creeps up out of no where like little attacks and then goes away again, almost like a contraction of sorts.I have fullness feeling in my ears, yet the immunologist checked my ears and said they looked perfect.I feel like I am in the same boat and just feel so defeated and the amount of doctors I will need to see that will probably fail to help me.

So sorry to hear these stories from so many suffering people.

I to have experienced very similar symptoms for the past 6 Months. However my main area of concern is the loud and annoying screeching noise in my Head which appears to come mainly from my left ear but gradually moves to both Ears and can last for hours. It is worse in later afternoon and evening.

This condition came on very suddenly following a course of Antibiotics for a prior Nose and Throat infection. This treatment only assisted part of the problems I was experiencing and my GP finally diagnosed Tinnitus and said there is no real known effective treatment. Wow, scary!

I was then referred to an ENT who, following an MRI of my Brain said all was clear and that I had to learn to live with the Tinnitus. I must admit that "floored me" as he offered no real assistance or care. Disappointing to say the least.

I subsequently had Physiotherapy in my Neck region, and then both Sinus and Neck MRI and CT Scans which produced nothing remarkable other than some ageing wear and arthritis in the C5, C6 area of my spine. The GP also prescribed Amitriptyline 20mg which I think has helped a little with relaxing and sleep but that is about all.

I subsequently contacted a Dental Specialist who works largely in TMJ relief and using Low Level Laser Treatment as well as Head, Neck and Jaw exercises. He also stated that it was obvious I had a serious "Teeth Grinding" issue. He was very thorough, caring and upfront and stated that he cannot cure my condition, if in fact it is Tinnitus, but he is confident that with appropriate dental and Laser treatment he hopes to lessen the debilitating experience of my condition. I am just 2 weeks into a 3 month treatment period and hoping for some positive results as nothing has helped much as yet.
