Profuse sweating....

Posted , 11 users are following.

since I've been having such a horrible time with profuse sweating, my daughter's been doing some research for me. she happened upon a medication named 'Robinul' which evidently is mainly prescribed for peptic ulcers, but has been proven to be a good remedy for excessive perspiration! it's being prescribed "off label" for that now.

this has been such a HUGE problem for me (wet hair, scalp, and face) terribly embarrassing!!!

has anyone heard of this medication or tried it??

what are your thoughts?

I'm desperate and ready to try almost anything!

side effects??

I should also add, this has ONLY become a problem since prednisone!

agree with most here- i would stay away from adding another med. I am also dealing with this sweating issue but i am trying to be smart about what I wear, and if I feel a flash get to a place where i can step outside to cool off or use a cool cloth. Also if your vitamin D is off it will make your head sweat so get you vitamin D levels right if they are not but I am not looking to add meds unless absolutely needed for very good medical reason. in the big scenario my goal is to get to a place where i am not drug dependent and i realize it may take some time to get there but the fewer drugs I have to eliminate the quicker it MIGHT happen.

Funny thing about the clothes, I was wearing tshirts in the winter and people where saying , aren't you cold.

I have also been studying the best food to eat that are anti inflammatory . I also take a tumeric tablet each day.

I don't know if this will help anyone ! but the way I look at it, none of us have anything to lose.

GOOGLE and see what may suit you.

KaneDylan....hi, saw your post about tumeric and Google'd it. Holy, Moly!!!! it seems this helps everything from depression to high cholesterol to joints!!!

what's been your experience? how much do you take and any side effects?? capsules?

as far as the clothes....these days my wardrobe consists of short sleeve t-shirts and light weight cotton pants, and no, I'm NEVER cold!! sooo frustrating as this is my favorite time of year and normally I'd be getting out all my cute autumn sweaters....but not this year😣.

Lynda......There are no side effects from tumeric tabs, mine are 1000 mgms. it definately will help but not straight away , there is such a lot of info on tumeric and its all good.

I was also told to take caltrate for calcium and vitamin D.

I eat 2 fresh oranges a day as they help with inflammation. I also eat whatever fruit & veg is in season that can help inflammation, there are so many , google and you should find something you like.

I don't know the answer, Lynda, but I would be interested to know as my husband has terrible problems with sweating. It soaks through his shirts and he feels embarassed because of the large damp patches on both his back and front. It is also linked to medication. I realise it will be a different name in the UK. I hope you have success with this and someone is able to answer your question.

thx silver....I'm gonna call my doctor in the am and I'll get back to you with an answer then!

Lynda, honestly I would try anything but yet another medication to add to a cocktail you are already taking. If it is prescribed "off label", it means that is not approved for this particular need. Everyone sweats with prednisone, some more then the others. I have the same issue and this is what I do...

    1. Drink more then you did before and make sure that you replenish liquid that you sweated out.
    2. Use thin cotton towel, make it damp and put it around your neck. This will cool you down and reduce sweating. You can use it to wipe off face and neck area and keep them cool. Also rinse and re-wet the towel often.
    3. Before going out take a shower and do this several times a day. Don't use soap except in few places ( arm pits and groin area).

See how that works for you.... I have been reading your posts and I would think the last thing you need is yet another medication.

So, I waited awhile before posting this....I didn't want to seem ungrateful (to be clear, I'm sooo greatful) or unappreciative of all your advice!

But with all due respect, do you think I've NOT TRIED all these helpful little hints?? I have, and they DO (sometimes) work. and it's one thing to be sitting on the couch folding laundry or relaxing watching tv with a wet towel 'round your neck, then to be going to dinner at a nice restaurant with friends....it doesn't quite work! or to be shopping and while looking at a beautiful sweater, dropping beads of sweat on it!! to me, that just doesn't "cut" it.

as far as medications, I take 3 different ones daily (including prednisone). While this isn't Great, I don't believe it's exorbitant or over the top!

In any case, I've decided to do some more research before contacting my doctor about the possibility of going on another medication. I just need some relief from this very embarrassing and VERY uncomfortable problem!

I SO hope I've not offended anyone or sounded unappreciative of your suggestions...in fact, I could really use some feedback right about now!

      thanks for listening....

Lynda, During the beginning of my PMR, before diagnosis, I would wake up wet in the middle of the night and have to change clothes. I'm sure that was partly the cause of my 20 lb wt loss (a PMR symptom). Gradually, it would just be my head that sweat. Sometimes, when I wasn't taking enough pred, my head would sweat again at night. I believe it is the PMR announcing itself. You might try increasing the pred a mg or two.

I remember working with a lady many years ago who had a similar problem. She tried so many different ideas but was dripping with sweat which made her life embarassingly unbearable. Eventually her consultant prescribed medication which didn't clear it completely but improved her life greatly. I'm sorry but I don't know what it was and there are probably better drugs on the market. I think you should speak to a medic and discuss the problem.

thanks peggy...at the moment I'm trying to do a very SLOW taper (currently on 14.5mg.) but even when I've been on higher dosages of pred. (16.5 is my highest dosage thus far) I've still had the same problem! as this has never been an issue for me before, I can only assume it's prednisone driven!

again, just ONE of my many problems with this drug!

thanks silver....could med have been Robinul?? that's what my daughter found. if so, did your friend have any side effects?

When my PRED was a higher dose I didn't have pain or sweating, only since this gun ho! Dr of mine though she had a miracle cure for me in only 3 months , then all the nasty things started happening.

I am learning something new every day on this forum and I love it.

      Hi lynda62707

The medication Robinul has quite a few side effects one of which is dry eyes and dry mouth. Preds also have this side effect so you would be getting a double wammy of dryness. I know you said you have a lot of pred side effects at the mo do you have dry eyes and mouth??

Having dry eyes and a dry mouth are not nice you would have to ask your doctor for articial tear drops and artificial saliver drops to combat the dryness. Even though Robinul will help with the sweats it does present, like pred, with adverse side effects. Hope something can be sorted out for you lynda......

thanks mary...like I said, I'm gonna hold off for awhile on Robinul.

no, I've not got dry mouth, but I DO have dry eyes...along w/the other eye problems I've got! btw, my eye surgery is scheduled for 12/10! (Merry Christmas!)

      something to look forward toπŸ˜•πŸŽ„.

for now, I'll just have to hope for a Great birthday present on 11/6....Voting Day!!πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

I'm sorry, Lynda, but I can't remember the name of it and I'm now retired. I think the names may be different here in the UK. It didn't eradicate the sweating but gave some control so that she felt able to go out. I have had a lot of sweating with the pred but nothing like this particular lady was suffering, though her condition was completely different from PMR.

      Hi lynda62707

Yes, good idea you don't want to exacerbate your already dry eyes. I know a few who have had cataract ops and they say it not an awful op you are awake and it's quite quick. I thought also, to tell you, i used to wear a sweat band because as you say it drips down your face. I didn't put it around my forehead like the athletes do i wore it under the back of my head and ontop of my forehead that's where the sweat was profuse. It was a towelling sweatband that soaked up the sweat.

Have you been to the pumpkin field yet?..if i'd have lived near you 18 months ago you would only have to make a hole in the middle of the table and i would have popped my head through it and you could have painted my face orange. You wouldn't tell the difference hahaha!!πŸ€—πŸ€—πŸ€—πŸŠ.....take care keep smiling...πŸ‘
