Proscar/Finasteride & Tamsulosin Questions

Been taking Proscar & Finasteride for over a year due to BHP- still getting up minimum of 3 times a night to urinate- on ocasions 4-5 times- Once in awhile I get a break of 2 times but not often, as I track the times for over 12 months.
Side effects- less sexual activity as expected and when erections do ocurr they are not as firm but here is the latest side effect and I was wondering if anyone on this forun has experienced a slight curveture in their penis during an erection? I know it's an embarassing question but I am very curious.
Has anyone stopped taking Proscar and if you have what did you experience? I.e. did you have increasing urinating problems?
I have reported this to my Doctor.

Hi Guy,
Don't have any input on Proscar, but you mentioned Tamsulosin also. I have experienced difficult side effects of the Tamsulosin: very bad nasal congestion particularly at night, and a persistent cough. Actually switched to every other day to try to give my breathing a break.

Guy, I have been there for over 10 years. My suggestion to you is to self-cathing. See your urologist, and tell him you want to try to self-cathing. I am doing that now for around 9 days, because I have a very hard time urinating on my own. It's the BEST!!! I sleep throught the night without waking. After I self-cathing, my bladder, feels completely empty, and I don't have the urge to urinate again for hours. I am still new to this, but I wish I had known about it 10 years ago. In the beginning, I felt kind of nervous inserting a tube in my penis, but now, the reward is far better than the chore of self-cathing. The pain, is non-existant for me. I go very slowly, and so there is no pain at all! As the catheter, is moving down further into my penis, I can feel the sensation, and it feels kind of weird, but no pain. If I go a little faster, I notice a slight sting...that's when I slow down, and take my time. So far, it takes me around 4 minutes from start to finish. As I've stated earlier, I just take my time and go slowly. I believe you will be more comfortable, if you start to self-cath. Your bladder, will be completely empty, and so no more feelings of your bladder, feeling like it's not quite emptly. You know that feeling...
I've been told by some on this forum, to use the size 14 or 12. I told my urologist, that and he told me to use a size 16. He gave me samples of the size 16, and so far it's working alright. The higher the number, the bigger the diameter of the catheter. Guy, self-cathing, is the way to go, for me anyway.

I used a 14 and 16 to self cath and had difficulity. After surgery they inserted a F24. Thank God I was knocked out. That's a big sucker.

Hi Dennis, I have urine rentention, have benn on a foley catherter ,changed once a month. I just caught an infection from this ,urologist put me on ciproflaxacin. This is not the same as self cathing, are there the same problems with getting an infectiom? How often do you self cath? Do you have to leave it in all night?I'm 86 years old, they want to do a Turp. I must admit i am afraid of this?
thanks.

Frank, I had the same situation. Ha d cath for a monththen it got infected. I was put on Batrim that seemed to clear it up but went to self cathing. That was difficult and caused a lot of bleeding, so I just had the Button Plasma TURP. No you do not leave the self cath in . You do it, drain the bladder and don't do it again until it's full. I just could not do it. I'm 61 so we will see how this works. Check out the Button Plasma TURP. The UROLIFT is also available if your prostate is not too big and that one is done in the office.
Less bleeding and you go home the same day.

Frank, my wife's friend's dad, is 87 years old, and he self-caths every 4 hours. I don't know how many months/years, that he has been doing this. He gets an infection periodically, is what I've been told. I have another friend's dad, that was doing a foley for 12 years. His son, my friend used to do the changing for his dad, for 12 years! At first, his dad, had a hard time with wearing a Foley, but eventually he got so used to it, that my friend used to change the dad's Foley when he was asleep. As for me, I'm 67 years old, and I have been doing the self-cathing for around two weeks. I am getting pretty used to the routine, and the weird feeling, that comes with self-cathing. I average around 2 to 3 self-cathing's a day.

Hello Guy,
I have taken Doxysosin for 10 years and it helped for awhile then went to Flomax but that made it hard to breath through my nose and I had 0% ejaculation. Went back to Doxysosin and got some ejaculation but not much. Doxysosin keeps your blood pressure down so that was a good thing for me.
Over the years my prostate grew and I startng Fenasteride. Wow that stuff shuts down all of your semen and the erections are difficult to maintain. Made me feel less of a man. Energy down and my workouts were weak. I take testoserone (androgel) to keep it in normal levels because of low T, so I don't like something that messes with that. I am very active.
My prostate continued to grow until I could not pee without a catheter. Went on several occassions to the ER for a Foley but once removed the pee shut off and I was back at the doctors. This went on for about a month. Had two doctors say that the prostate was really big, over 100 and I needed the dredful TURP. I tried self cathaterazation but that was painful and caused the prostate to bleed heavily. (Yes I did it slow and easy but it wasn't working). I wanted the UROLIFT but the prostate was too big.
I did some reserch and decided on the Button Plasma TURP. (new version of the TURP but same idea). Less bleeding and down time according to the doctor. I had it done 5 days ago and am still recovering but I was not going to live a life without being to pee. That is more pain that its worth. I know there is retro ejaculation but the drugs do the same thing and make you feel weak.
I'll keep you updated on this proceedure.
