Proscar/Finasteride & Tamsulosin Questions

Posted , 10 users are following.

Been taking Proscar & Finasteride for over a year due to BHP- still getting up minimum of 3 times a night to urinate- on ocasions 4-5 times- Once in awhile I get a break of 2 times but not often, as I track the times for over 12 months.

Side effects- less sexual activity as expected and when erections do ocurr they are not as firm but here is the latest side effect and I was wondering if anyone on this forun has experienced a slight curveture in their penis during an erection? I know it's an embarassing question but I am very curious.

Has anyone stopped taking Proscar and if you have what did you experience?  I.e. did you have increasing urinating problems?

I have reported this to my Doctor.

    Hey guy,

Your answer is P.A.E. Your symptoms were mine of over 3 years and I was preparing for a T.U.R.P., when I found out about P.A.E.

Truth be told, there is NO drug worth fighting B.P.H. cause they all have contraindications that suck. With B.P.B., it's dried up siemen, retro-ejaculation, sterility, stuffed nose, dry throat, dizziness, etc.

My P.A.E. was done @ Hackensack Medical Center, Dr. John DeMerritt. Before the procedure, which 5 1/2 hours, I had all your symptoms. Since the procedure, done June 24 of this year, no more night trips to the bathroom, and slowly but surely the prostate is shrinking. Because I was on Finesteride and Flomax, the last thing to return to normalcy is siemen and ejaculation, as per my Uro guy.

    Hopefully, another month or so.

The last resort is a TURP, Urolift, Holep, or PVP!

It depends on where Guy is. If in the UK and an NHS patient his choices are limited.

I came off flomax a few weeks ago and about a month after the P.A.E. procedure. Flomax is suppoed to help shrink the prostate but, it never did for me. I really don't know what flomax did for me, except totally ruin my sex life along with B.P.H.

I don't think Flomax is supposed to shrink the prostate. It is supposed to relax the smooth muscles around the urethra so urine can flow more easily. It does that for me along with the aforementioned side effects. There is another class of drugs including Avodart and Proscar that is supposed to shrink the prostate, but can take 6 months. I tried Proscar but the improvement in symptoms was minimal to none.

I had the PAE Rich, and a few weeks ago the Urologists took me off of tamsulosin; a drug which totally sucks. I'm hoping my siemen comes back and that ejaculation becomes normal again. dr. says about  2 to 3 months before that will happen. I hope your having success but I did not find any drug that shrunk the prostate. after years, I've opted for the PAe and am hopeful of it's success.

I'd love to hear how things progress for you. Where did you have the PAE done?

      Hi Rich,

I had the PAE done @ Hackensack Medical Center by Dr. John DeMerritt.

The procedure toke 5 1/2 hours which he said was his longest and toughest to date. My prostate was 200 when I went in and that may have been the reason why. Anyway, my sex life's been screwed up since this started a few years ago; because of Finesteride and tamsulosin combination. Neither drug helped with the prostate size and, for that, matter, peeing at night. I averaged 6 wake ups per night.

My last visit two week ago, Uro guy took me off both drugs and said, "let's see how the PAE works"., so, that's what I'm doing.

I've lost 15 pounds and am exercising more. Trying everything but I think it's mostly time that will tell.

How do the uro symptoms seem since you stopped the meds? Yes, I think exercise is important. Been doing Pilates and walking a lot, also some small weights. At my age (69) it's either use it or lose it.

Since I've had the P.A.E. back in June, the urinary problems have gone away. No longer urinating at night. No emergencies. All that's fine. The retrograde ejaculation is the problem that has not gone away in over 3 years. I'm off Finesteride and Tamsulosin and the Uro guy says we'll just have to wait and see but he blames the retro on Tamsulosin! fyi, I'm 71 and still biking 75 miles a week and clinging to 201!
