Prostatitis recovery period

Hi All,
So I've been trying to get rid of prostatitis for the last 3 and a half months now, hard to get a diagnosis but eventually got put on 6 weeks of meds (4 weeks levo, 2 weeks doxycycline). After 6 weeks of up and down in regards to progress, a few days after finishing the script the symptoms got better and urine flow improved (no more retention feeling etc.)
Read about only 5% have bacterial blah blah, but my doc seems to think all prostatitis is caused by bacteria at the beginning. Anyway, symptoms improving but I have also stopped drinking, smoking, eating spicy foods, sitting down for longs periods of time and cut down on sex. From your experience If I lapse and do these things will the prostatitis just come back?
thanks

And as far as alternative treatments--I see a lot about saw palmetto, cranberry juice, and flax seed? Are these things really helpful?
I also read someone wrote about masturbating a half hour after taking medicine? Is this reliable info?

Hi Rogerthat,
My case might be of interest to you as the plethora of symptoms I (have) had came after an intense night on the toilet after severe pains in my intestines. Whether it was a bug or a food-borne illness which caused it, I can't be sure though.
Anyway, my symptoms began a week or so after the stomach problems and I developed flu-like symptoms (fever, sore throat, etc). Once they cleared up (after 3 or 4 days), I started noticing discomfort in my testicles and perineum. Doctor said it was prostatitis and put me on cipro for 4 weeks on and off and symptoms eased to an extent, but I came off cipro in the end because it didn't seem to end all the problems I was having (swollen testicle and groin area at that time).
After those problems the discomfort continued in a variety of places including bladder, penis, anus, pelvis, throat, mouth, stomach (gases), and eventually in my head.
All this lead me to do my own research as I thought that it couldn't be prostatitis - especially after so many different tests which found nothing - and the most probable cause for me seems to be reactive arthritis as I fit the profile of those mostly affected (white male between 20 and 40 years old).
In a nutshell, although this was neither confirmed or dismissed by a variety of doctors I spoke to, I believe that bacteria from the intestines which managed to compromise the immune system in some way was the cause of all my problems, so it could be the same for you.
Good luck finding out!

Hi Roger that,
I did see a urologist, but only for the reason I was referred for by my GP: epididymitis. The urologist saw no need to check my prostate at the time as it wasn't bothering me.
I imagine it got inflamed at some stage, but it was never actually physically tested.
I never got the joint paints, nor conjunctivitis, which are typical in cases of reactive arthritis.
If the cipro caused the exacerbation of any of my symptoms which were to develop, I will never know. I never felt any other side effects when taking the cipro, though.
To be honest, 2 years and 5 months after the onset of the illness I still get pains in the heavily affected areas, but nothing grave and which stops me from carrying on with my daily life. To be honest, I just tried to get on with my life as I realized that after there were pains in a certain area, I would not experience any more discomfort in that actual area of my body. Whether pain is the sign of the bacteria dying off, I do not know.
I never did the gene test either because I found out about reactive arthritis quite a while into my "just get on with it, it will clear itself up eventually" mind frame. I am still not entirely convinced my symptoms match those of reactive arthritis either... especially the ones I experienced in my head. It just seems like a bacterial infection got out of control and went systemic.
I suppose I will never know..
Let me know if you have any more questions...I can empathize with your situation as I know what it is like to be given no concrete answer from doctors and their tests...

My advice - you won't like it but here goes, I don't smoke but basically quit alcohol and caffeine both are diuretics so cause pressure on the prostate. I have a hot bath every night and I mean hot- soak for 30 mins reduces swelling. I have gone on a no dairy no gluten diet and shifted a stone, joined the gym and hit cardio 5 times a week (no cycling) Drink 2 liters of water a day and have sex every other day, it clears the prostate. I have taken a 4 week course of antibiotics but did very little I also take saw palmetto every day!! This has worked and I still follow it, I had few good days followed by awful bad days- this will take 6 months minimum
