Prostatitis recovery period

Hi All,

So I've been trying to get rid of prostatitis for the last 3 and a half months now, hard to get a diagnosis but eventually got put on 6 weeks of meds (4 weeks levo, 2 weeks doxycycline). After 6 weeks of up and down in regards to progress, a few days after finishing the script the symptoms got better and urine flow improved (no more retention feeling etc.)

Read about only 5% have bacterial blah blah, but my doc seems to think all prostatitis is caused by bacteria at the beginning. Anyway, symptoms improving but I have also stopped drinking, smoking, eating spicy foods, sitting down for longs periods of time and cut down on sex. From your experience If I lapse and do these things will the prostatitis just come back?

thanks

I realize this is an older post but still a shot in the dark:

What were your symptoms going into your diagnosis of prostatitis?  Just curious for my own issues that I am experiencing.

Hi my symptoms started about 7 months ago but became so bad in January this year that I had to visit my GP.  My symptoms are pressure in my back passage pain in my hips and groin and lower back.  I also have an ache in my right testicle.  I was peeing up to 16 times a day.  On the advice of some of the guys on this forum I have cut some foods out my diet which have started to make a difference as well as no alcohol or caffeine. I have been on Citroen for six weeks but my GP has stopped this due to no real improvement.  I am now 3 months into treatment and have now been referred to urology. Hope this helps

      Hi Ross

Exactly the same symptoms as me, I started getting symptoms at the end of January and was officially diagnosed 4 weeks ago, placed on ciproflaxin and have been on it 4 weeks, started to get much better and symptom free, I built in exercise, nightly hot baths, cut out gluten, alcohol and caffeine and taking saw palmetto. Yesterday I woke up with lower back pain and pressure in my back passage. I have read around this and you have to stick with it as it can flare up at times. If it's not better by the 20th may I'm being referred for a cystoscope and biopsy.

I don't want that ha ha so antibiotics and life medication is my plan

Hi Barry thank you for replying and sharing your symptoms. This sounds very like mine. What is saw palmetto and what does it do? I am willing to try anything. This condition is life changing. Have made any other changes to your life style? I must admit I miss alcohol but I did find gluten free beer and was advised by a friend who is a gp that the reason for cutting out caffeine and alcohol is due to being dyharetics and as long as you keep well hydrated moderate alcohol is ok

      Hi Ross

It is awful, I have made all those changes, saw palmetto is a natural anti inflammatory so aims to reduce swelling, give it a try. I'm keeping a journal as well to see how often it flares up, I had 3 weeks of no symptoms, now 3 days of symptoms so I'll keep you updated, doing everything I can to avoid a scope

Hi Barry, thanks for the info on saw palmetto I will definitely give it a try. I am really pleased you had a 3 week period without symptoms that is reassuring that there may be some breaks in the pain. I have had 1 or 2 days at a time but nothing long term. I hope your symptoms don't go on any longer than a few days. Please keep in touch I am on Facebook or I can send you my email. Cheers

      Hi Ross

I'm not on Facebook but by all means pass me your e-mail, I'm going to have a few beers tonight, first in 6 weeks so I'll see how it goes. Fingers crossed

      I do enjoy a beer

      Cheers Ross

The flare up has gone, alcohol had no impact whatsoever so that's good news. I feel great now, been on antibiotics now for a month so I'm going to come off them today and see what happens. The flare up lasted 4 days but was manageable. As antibiotics are not a lifetime medication I'm dropping it and seeing what happens!! Let's see

Hi rose I know it's a month later but how are your symptoms now, I have this awful condition too and I have a day or so OK and then bad again, it seems to be affecting my lower back and hips too lately, not sure if that's the prostatitis or if the Cipro caused it as was on it for five weeks, also where can I get saw palmetto please

Hi, like a few others I'm new to this.

I really can't say how long Prostatitis last for, as this is only my second week.

After my diagnosis. I've been told I don't have a urine infection. Just a lot of pain around my groin area. I was prescribed Trimethoprim which didn't work.

I'm abound to start with caution Cipro. My doc sez everyone reacts differently to meds. I haven't heard of Flax seeds or Saw palmetto, which I will definitely look into later. Come to think of it I've never heard of Prostatitis till now, wishing you all good health

After 3 days with Ciprofloxaxin, all hell broke loose. Really painful tendons, mainly ankles and knees. So back on Trimethoprim which I've already tried.

Seven days later still the same. During this time with Trimethoprim I bought some Saw palmetto and Flax seeds. I'm beginning to improve slowly.

My doc has put me on a course of Co-amoxiclav. He also reckons it could be up too three months before I'm completely ok. Unfortunately it has a habit of returning?

New to this forum, well I intially felt pain in peeing and a continual urge to urinate, no blood, and continual mild groin paid in low left abdomen with left testicle sensitive. Doctor prescribed Doxy for a week and urine test. Urine Test came back negative for infection, however after a week the symptoms still remained. So i booked time at the urologist for blood tests, ultrasound and discussion. He issued 1 month of cipro which I am now on week 3. The ultrasound came back of the kidneys, bowel and Prostate which I already knew was slightly swollen. The prostate showed calcification central which I then reviewed as I was frustrated. The peeing had subsided from the cipro but still had moments of irritation. So I started 3 days ago taking Zinc and Magnesium along with the Saw Pilmetto. I noticed the heavy feeling lift as it appears the zinc works on the calcification in which bacteria can survive within the prostate. This assists the cipro on doing its job. I will continue for another 2 weeks before I visit the uro again.

Avoid the following, sitting down for long periods, caffeine, alcohol and dairy product.

Tips - Hot baths, resting, eat kale, spinach, masturbate probably every 3 days to clean out the Prostate and as soon as you feel that dreaded itchy feeling, get up and move around to take your minds of it. Tomatoes are also very good, as they have a lycopene, but cook them in olive oil first. Eat a load of these for breakfast. Take the zinc tablet and magnesium before bed an continue on the antibiotics, I am not I think 70% there, but for a while i was stuck on 35%. Also get an ultrasound of the prostate, its important because the calcification could be the issue in the swelling.

Hey, I finally found out after quite a few more tests. I saw a Urologist who ruled out anything to do with my Prostate. In August I had a camera looking into my bowels. It seems the Zomorph I have to take twice daily is causing, really, really terrible Constipation, a change of diet and a regular dose of Laxido. It's early days but it seem to be working? Hopefully I can get off this Zomorph soon, take care all.
