Interested in hearing peoples symptoms and experiances with this. I had pvd of the left eye and sure enough 6 months later, right eye. Having problems dealing with it. When both eyes are affected, hard not to think of it 24/7. Would like to hear others stories. Thanks.

i started with PVD a month ago. first i had a black arc line darting across my vision . 2 weeks later flashes started and i have many floaters flashes and my vision is dull.... kinda like eye glasses are dirty. My doctor dilated my eyes and said I'm fine but I didn't have any other tests. Also, my pupils are slightly different sizes and it's scaring me. Has anyone had different pupil sizes through this? Also what other tests should I have on my eyes? I am noticing the black arc that I had at the inset of the first eye is now starting in the other eye. This is all scary Thank you

I've had a PVD in my left eye for about 2 years now. So far its left me with one large floater (not a Weiss ring as far as I know) which does sometimes block my vision but moves easily when I tilt my head. I did have a sudden rush of dot like floaters in the summer, which are still visible in strong sunlight or white backgrounds.

I started a PVD in my right eye about 3 months ago. Initially with a horseshoe shaped flash in my central vision and then a rush of dot floaters . I suddenly had a lot of flashes this week so went to eye casualty. Retina appears normal. But then the next day I started to get these bold black squiggles in the eye which then stretch, start to break up and disappear. Rang eye casualty and was asked to go back, and again retina was normal.

These "strings" have continued (they are only visible for about 4 to 5 mins) so spoke to a registrar this morning. He said just to monitor what's going on and ring them again if things seem to be worsening. He didn't think going in for another examination today would be of any value.

He said that the chances of anything happening which would need treatment after having two "clear" examinations (with no signs of any "tobacco dust" - apparently a clinical sign of impending retinal detachment) as about 1 in 50 (or 2%). So can't be ruled out but unlikely.

Was told to look out for a sudden rush of floaters (like rain), a veil in my peripheral vision or a blockage in my central vision.

I'm glad I've found this thread, as although I'm sorry other people are going through this, it helps me feel less alone that I'm not the only one suffering health anxiety.

My wife had surgery a week ago to keep her retina from detaching. The doctor did the laser surgery and put a gas bubble in her eye. She was face down for 6 days and today is her first day not having to be face down. She is seeing green spinning dots and I was wondering if anyone else experience this post-op? She's called the doctor and the assistant told her if its something the doctor needs to see they will call back.

Thank you in advance for any info!

      Hi Lisa,

I had PVD in my right eye about 3 years ago, and a year after that I had it in my left eye.

To this day, I still get constant flashing. Of course I do not notice it through the day, but when I am in the dark, and I move my eyes side to side, I see the flashing.

I also still have a lot of stuff floating across my eyes. Not black spots, but it looks like a semi transparent film that moves over.

Thank you for the kind reply, Lolasmom . I have the film too, plus cobwebs. Flashes too but mostly when the light is dim or it is dark. I'm having a hard time adjusting to this and feel upset almost all of the time . I have worked so hard all my life and now it feels like i wont be able to enjoy anything when I retire. Does anyone have advice for managing the stress? Thanks.

      Lisa,

You will be fine. It does take a while for all to settle. I hope your eye doctor has reassured you.

hi Lisa I sympathize with you and feel your anxiety. I've had pvd ongoing for over two years. some days are much better than others though. what really surprises me is that for something that is meant to be so common, there us so little support out there. i find this forum very useful. ive been discharged from the clinic i was referred to. all a bit odd. last time i went the doctor said everything looked good and no xign of detachment, and said everything should be fine now (as if if there was any concerns of anything bad going to happen it would have done so by now), but he never said if the process was complete (was the pvd over - ie separated safely). i hear from others it sometimes never fully separates and symptoms persist for years (for ever even) ongoing. just a consequence of ageing.

      you take care

      best wishes Mark

      Hi Mark.

I had pvd in my first in 2018 and my second eye in 2019.

I am still getting the flashing If I am in the dark and move my eyes from side to side, it is apparent in both eyes. My eye doctor told me I probably have it all day long but do not notice it in the daytime.

I still get alot of floaters daily especially when outside. They are not black but the only way to describe are semi transparent Hate it when I am driving

I really thought these issues would be gone by now

Lolasmom I have got PVD my flashes lasted about a week and I saw the ophthalmologist and he said its already happened in my other eye too although i didn't notice any flashes in that eye. I have loads of floaters and can't bear the sunlight or even daylight! I also feel i have a film over my right eye and they are feel very dry. By coincidence I have also been diagnosed with narrow eye angles. The fluid escapes through these angles and if it doesn't the pressure in your eyes can build up. The first ophthalmologist said I need to get it checked annually the second one I saw said he recommended a laser called an iridotomy procedure where they laser a hole in your iris. I am absolutely terrified as I'm so worried I will get the flashing back and even more floaters. this really is all such a worry and my anxiety is through the roof! How are you now?

      Hi there Helen

I'm so sorry to hear of your anxiety. I also have anxiety but not because of my eyes.

It sounds like you are taking the right step in your eye care.

I am still getting the flashes. But as mentioned I only notice it when i am in a dark room and move my eyes from side to side. But, i know the flashing is going on all the time....I just can not see it through the day.

I still get ALOT of floaters. And yes, it feel sometimes like a film over my right eye.

It really bothers me when I am driving and it is sunny outside. What I do is shift my eyes from side to side a couple of times, and that will help to settle all this craziness for awhile

Has your eye doctors not explained anything to you?

This is very common with PVD. It can take some time to settle.

I am not anxious about it, but sometimes just get very annoyed.

Interesting enough, when I had my first pvd in y left eye, my eye doctor told me to ne prepared for the right eye to have this. It was a year to the day!!!!!

    You will be just fine

I see a lot of replies on here are quite old. I started with flashing and floaters in my right eye . I went to A&E they looked at cornea but couldn't look at retina. I have an appointment at the eye clinic on Thursday. I am really struggling with this my anxiety has hit the roof. The flashes and floaters i find incredibly frightening. I use a computer at work constantly and i know i will struggle. I find bright light awful. Has anyone made a recovery from this? I usually play lawn bowls but have stopped until I see the clinic but i don't think i could cope at the moment anyway. can someone tell me, when they dilate your eye to look at the retina does the dye hurt? is your vision very blurred and how long for?

On June 9th I noticed different than usual floaters so I decided I would go to the eye doctor during my lunch hour. On the way, I had a big floater which scared me. My eye doctor was able to see me. They did a full eye exam, then he looked with his magnifying glass. He was able to see the floater, and said my retina was attached. I asked why that happened and he said because I have myopia, and that I am at the age where people start to have pvds. I asked if he thought I was going to have a retina detachment twice, and both times he said no. Since I was anxious, he said they could set up an appointment with a Retina Specialist. I had that appointment a week later. He did a deeper eye exam. He also saw the floater, and said my retina was fine. After the exam he said he did not need to see me again because everything looked good. He also said this happens to everyone, some just notice more then others. I asked him if I had any restrictions, and he said no. It is a scary thing because everything becomes - is that normal...

      hi Con1234

i sympathize with you. i too have pvd (diagnosed some 2.5 years ago), but discharged from the eye clinic being told all is ok/fine, yet my right eye just does not feel right. like its all gunked up sometimes, yet they say you shouldn't feel anything with pvd eye. frustrating and anxiety provoking. Find this forum helps/comforting. so little help or support around for this (apparently'normal') condition
