Query 90 degree requirements after posterior THR

Posted , 10 users are following.

Two weeks post THR (posterior), decided to remove raised toilet and stand up unaided.  Big mistake!  It hurt and is still hurting. Pain is bearable and I hope with rest it will subside.  My weight is 52ks so not a problem.  I guess I'm looking for reassurance that things will settle down and that I haven't dislocated "anything".  Happened approx 24 hours ago.

Hi, I had a new hip put in on 4 Jan and was told "at least" three months before removing raised toilet seat, doing normal things etc. I still find low seats a bit difficult. My gut feeling is that you're doing this WAY too soon! I would reinstate the raised loo. Worth taking every precaution!

Raised seat has definitely been reinstated, just nervous about whether I've caused any damage and angry at my stupidity!

I'm in NZ. Had to have raised toilet and other precautions for 6 weeks. After that restrictions were lifted except for crossing my legs. That stays for a few more months.

    dear geraldine,

warm welcome to this hippies forum where we share our personaal experiences -

I am joining the choir here and am happy to read to seat as been reinstated ... why are those toilets so low anyway ???

I kept mine for a long time because I had no other support to pull myself up - then my other hip started to act up -

When in doubt, go and see your surgeon or GP, okay ...

I hope you are doing better today ...

    big warm hug

Thanks, Renee, don't think I'll mention it to my surgeon, we all know what he would be thinking!!

well .... maybe Richard ... it is different for men but don't you guys have to sit down on the toilet too sometimes ?

      Dear Renee

ER yes but I did not understand the significance about not mentioning about seat height to the surgeon but perhaps I simply did not join up the dots!

      Cheers Richard

    Hi Geraldine

Glad to hear you have reinstated the raised toilet seat. I had posterior approach and it was an absolute God send. I got rid of it at 7 weeks, I'm around the 14 week mark now,I still find low seating a little bit tricky at times.my consultant said I could stop with the raised seating at 6 weeks.

Yes it does get easier I managed at 7 weeks without it, it was fine, a small amount of discomfort but this does improve with time. If your worried and the pain does not settle perhaps speak to the gp.

    Regards Nicky

Nicky, I'm afraid with me it's a thing called "patience",

of which I have very little!  What comes across loud and clear is that these rules aren't made for fun and I have to follow them.  The reason I joined in the discussion was because I got a fright as it hurt pretty badly.  24 hours later it has settled down and I have learned my lesson!!  I very much appreciate the helpful comments, Regards GG

Hi thre, I had the posterior approach 5 weeks ago now and I'm still using the toilet seat and not bending beyond the 90 degrees so I would defo say 2 weeks is too early.

I know its hard but you have to try and be patient with your recovery...I am really eager to get back to work and my life too but better safe than sorry

Take care and good luck with your recovery x

Hi there, now I'm of the opinion you should tell your doctor or how else will he know why you are hurting.  But you'll know what to do when the time comes.

Now for a little bit of levity about the raised toilet seat.  A friend loaned me her mothers - I got it a couple weeks before the surgery.  I sent a lovely thank you note that evening, here is what it said:

Tr please thank your mother for the toilet seat and by the way she can have it back when she can pry it from my cold dead hands !!   LOL

My house was built in the 1980s and my seat might as well be a child's seat - except for the look of it I never ever ever want to give it up.  I will, of course, I have company coming two weeks.

    Happy Friday

I also want to say that many / most / a lot of us (okay me) have done things sooner than we should have and like you, we learned to back it up, stay the course, do as we are told, and for goodness sakes don't give up the pain pills too soon.  I was so concerned about addiction - my doc said you are not taking enough for a long enough period for that to happen.  That made me feel so much more secure.

Hi, I was told I could remove the raised seat at 6 weeks, which I did, but it all felt so low that I promptly put it back on again! In the end I kept it on until 3 months.

If you are still in pain and see your surgeon, I'm with Kebra, maybe you should tell him what you did, then he'll have more of an idea of what has happened.

    All the best, Judith
