Question about dizziness and propranolol

Posted , 6 users are following.

Could someone please help me. I've been on the 10 mg of propranolol for eight or nine days now and I've noticed yesterday dizziness and today dizziness especially when I'm up moving around. I read the side effects dizziness is one of them is it just your body having to get used to the medication? I've also over the past three or four days when I am sleeping I have to get up and run to the bathroom with diarrhea and nausea during the day is this normal with this medication? Since I had that bad spending episode on Friday night I've been and anxious mess and worried that the propranolol is causing all kinds of problems. So if anyone can help I would really appreciate it, thank you

Those are some of the side effects listed. Call docs office see if there's anything they can do. they can give you nausea meds but I found them to be very very constipating.

Thank you for replying. Do you take propranolol? I'm so afraid of meds but when I decided to try this I had such hope because most people have no problems on it. From what I've read and my son inlaw who is in the medical field has told me it's the body getting used to it. I guess some of the problem with me is I think side effects would be the first day not on the 7 or 8th day. Thus migraine associated vertigo is a crazy disorder it really isn't a stable think. Coz the dizziness just comes when it wants. I can feel fine all day then bam get hit the same night or spells throughout the day. I hate it

I am in the middle of testing again. Was told bppv first time ,ten years ago. Since then symptoms have gotten way worse. Left ear down to 30percent responsive to vestibular stimulation. No meds sept diazepam. And it's not helping much anymore. Started therapy but it's not helping much either. Waiting for app with neurologist. I looked that med your on up. Said side affects you are having. Was surprised all the things they treat with that med.

It helps to talk sometimes. Noone I know has this. I found out family members had this and never spoke of it. Would have saved me a few bux if i knew it ran in my family. It's a tough thing to deal with. Both mentally and financially. Cost me my life's savings and probably my job. I been told to tell my bosses when I came back to work this week. I can't get to the end of my driveway. Lol. Getting into docs offices is almost impossible. Specialists are booked 3 months ahead or more. I am glad I could be a little help to you. Hope you feel better soon. Take care.

    Hi Patty

I have been taking 1/2 a pill of propranolol for a few months now and didn't experience any side affects . You should call your doctor see if something else is causing your symptoms.

I know all of this is difficult and easier said than done, but try to relax .

I went on a website for VRT exercises and am doing some of them slowly And Not Pushing it By Over Doing It. It has help calm me down and it helps with the spinning and off balance feeling.

I hope you feel Better. 🌻

There is the one specifically for balance.

I have so many symptoms that I use the one from the Asian Doctor.

If you do these exercises start slow don't push yourself.

Good Luck To You And Feel Better.

Thank you. I looked them up. I have. Been doing VRT since last March, I do the gaze stabilization ones when sitting and focusing on the letter in the wall and doing up/down head movements for 2 mins then moving the head side to side, then I stand with a chair in front of me and close my eyes with my feet apart 1 inch and stand there for 2 mins, then still standing there with eyes closed i move my head to the right and count to 3 then back to the kiddle to 3 and to the left to 3 seconds I do 10 of those, then a walking one and bending one.

May I ask what your diagnoses is? Are you on any meds? What symptoms do you have? I have had this for 16 months and it's been an awful ride. I just want to get off the ride.

I was diagnosed with Labyrinthine back in December. Back then was bad because I didn't know what it was and I thought I was having a heart attack.

Had good months here and there but this month it hit me really hard again.

I have been on a steroids, acyclovir and Meclinzine. I stopped taking them because today is my 12th day and I nothing is helping.

Symptoms got really bad, sweats, nausea, off balance, ears hurting and a feeling like I was going to pass out. So there I go to ER they ran all kinds of tests and said I probably had an inner ear infection and gave me an antibiotic and Valium. The antibiotics are so strong and I feel horrible. Also I don't know if you experience shoulder and upper back pain. I have an appointment with my ENT tomorrow and I can hardly wait. I am so exhausted and frustrated from feeling this way. 😞

I hope you feel better at least stopping the meds, if they make you sick. I was given trigger point injections because of pain in my upper shoulders on both sides and neck pain and the steroids did me in. They stopped my thyroid meds from working and I got really sick, funny thing was it was a top migraine neuro who did the injections and he wouldn't deal with the dizziness, he said I had chronic subjective dizziness and to take kolonapin. When the steroid actually made the dizziness worse because it stopped the thyroid meds. Then going to my neuro ENT he diagnosed MAV and possible slight mdds. I had bppv in 2010 and he treated that then 5 yrs later the MAV hit me like a ton of bricks.

Yes I do have topof the shoulder pain on both sides and upper back pain, neck pain and headache. When I get the those things I usually get dizzy before and then I know here comes the 3 day headache. I think what makes me crazy is the dizziness the way it changes, from rocking for months then falling , leaning, bobbing. Everytime it changes I think it must be something else not MAV. I think that's the anxiety. Do you have anxiety? I've had it for many years but it only rates it's head when I'm sick.

I hope your spot goes well tomorrow and they are able to help you feel better

    • Posted

Yes I do have anxiety especially when the sweating and dizziness starts.

That's why I use the ice packs so that I can focus on the cold instead of the other stuff.

Did they tell you why you we're having the back and shoulder pain?

    • Posted

When I first got diagnosed last year They really worked for me and I could go on my normal stuff even drive. Now it doesn't work at all. Have you been on Diazepam? I was given 5 mg. And I am so tempted to cut one in half because my back really hurts.

    • Posted

They put me on 2mg diazepam. I was told the lower dose works better. Told them after being on them so long , I think I am building a tolerance to them. They wouldn't up the dose.

    • Posted

What did it do for you when you first started taking it?

What's driving crazy is the pain in the back of my neck upper shoulders on both sides. I have been putting heat and cold packs but it only helps for a little while. 😨

    • Posted

All it did for me was stop the vertigo and dizziness. Was working great for a long time. Why I can't figure out why they won't atleast try to up the dose. I don't abuse it or any other drugs. Don't drink or smoke. Get tested to make sure i am taking it as directed and nothing else. Some people , like myself, it will give a headache. Not all the time tho. Even when they gave it to me in the hospital, they have me Tylenol with it. Tryed Dramamine. Did nothing. Tryed meclizine. Did nothing. Diazepam is next step up. It worked. People who abuse it take alot of it. I seen online they use 150-225mg a day. I get 120 pills a month. 2 mg.each. And I don't use them all.

    • Posted

I don't understand why they won't adjust it for you especially when they know your condition.

It's the people that abuse it that mess it up for the people that really need it.

You should ask your doctor again being that they have found your symptoms getting worse. Have you ever been hospitalized for any if this?

When it first started I went 3 or 4 times. Had no idea why it was happening. Is scary. Then one night but hit hard. The monster best me up good. Room was spinning and would not stop. I sat in a chair staring at the wall fighting it for 8 hours. Finally gave in. Called my brother. He came over. No way he could get me to his van. If I even tried to move I threw up. He called ambulance. Spent 3 days in the hospital. Finally a ER doc said he had some problem. Gave me valium threw my IV. Room stopped spinning. Since then I learned going to the ER was useless. Nothing they can do.

Docs these days are worried about themselves. Not there patients. If you get addicted, die, sell the drugs, whatever else. They usually get in trouble for it. Way people abuse stuff can't really blame them. But not all people do that. Some of us are just trying to be able to function semi normal. If I wanted to abuse drugs, the 10's of thousands of dollars I spent on doctor bills, hospital bills, PT bills, I could have got better drugs than 2mg diazepam. Ambulance ride alone ws 1000 bux. PT has a 40 dollar co pay per visit. Plus each test I have been charged as much as 300 bux . Had me stand with my eyes closed. Put my arms out in front of me. March in place. That was a test. Cost me 300 bux.

No I've never asked about the back and neck pain, but I've had it for years at least the neck and head pain. I think it's part of the migraine and from stress. I use gel ice packs on it and sometimes heat, I have a heating pad that fix perfectly around your shoulders. I've gotten this pain for years but never had dizziness because of it.

I hate this dizziness, it just comes when it wants. You can be sitting feeling ok and then bam you feel like your dropping or sinking and the room feels like it's moving. It's enough to make you crazy, at least me. I don't know why but it scares me so.

I think with all the people that have these disorders there has to be someone who can help. Sometimes I wonder if it's not some unknown virus that we get and it just never leaves. I love it when I have a good day, none of these sensations to think about and worry about.

    • Posted

Wow that is so ridiculous !!! Yes the doctors nowadays are concerned about protecting themselves and lose what they are suppose to be doing for their patients.

    • Posted

Oh I agree !!!! The dizziness is really scary especially when you want it to stop and then here comes an anxiety attack.

I to o love it so much and I act like a little kid when I am having a good day. I catch up on my stuff and then I can interact with my grandkids.

I have my appointment tomorrow and I am going to ask my ENT about my back and shoulder pain, can it be connected to my inner ear issues?

    • Posted

I know I am starting to figure that out too. When I went the other night he looked at me so confused and like he was grabbing for straws.

I was waiting for him to tell me it was only panic attacks. But when I mentioned my ENT, he then said yes you have a inner ear infection.

They put an IV of saline, what was that for? How about the dizziness and the spinning oh and the nausea.

    • Posted

They start a IV to stabilize you and it's there if needed for meds etc. Standard stuff. Because vertigo and dizziness is a symptom not a disease, they have to be ready for anything. When I took the ambulance ride they started a IV. Gave me nausea meds threw it so I wouldn't get sick in there clean truck. Lol.

I'm curious what your doc will say about the pain. Please let me know what he thinks. I had massage therapy in mine filor a bit and it helped for awhile but didn't last. I also went to chiropractor for 4 months 3 tines a week and it helped a lot but when he adjusted my neck that's when I had the bppv come back. I wish I had an answer for all of us. I guess we just keep trying and hope one day we feel normal again. Right now I'm laying Dian with an ice pack and feeling like I'm falling and dropping, makes me nuts

    • Posted

I will sure let you know.. I have been walking around with ice packs all day just so I can get things done plus I am watching my grandchildren too. I find that when I am moving around I don't feel as bad, it when I seat still.

I too hope and pray they find and answer for all of us.

Where do you live? I live in San Diego, can.

Until more people have it, there won't be a cure. If theres no money in it, noone will fund the research. It's the same with all sickness.

Til they do there thing they have no idea what is going on. Had a nurse say to me " oohh. Your one of those" I said one of those what? I'm in sarasota fl.

I feel ok f I'm busy, accept for when I'm doing dishes or cooking, I feel like I'm going to fall backwards and I feel like I'm bobbing on a buoy. When I sit I feel it also thru my entire body, I guess that's what they mean by internal dizziness. There is so much to these disorders no wonder they can't figure it out. I have had so many symptoms, but dizziness, anxiety, nausea, aches in the upper back and neck and headaches are the ones that are always with me. Anxiety has its on set of symptoms and they are the same as MAV so it's hard to tell the diff. I do get depressed to.

    • Posted

I have pretty much the same symptoms as you do. I get frustrated and depressed because I am so tired of feeling this way. I sleep okay at night but at 3 or 4 in the morning here we go again.

Do you take anything for pain? I think I may break down and take a flexril for my back.

      Have a good evening.. 😊

The only thing I take is the propranolol. I had tried Amitriptyline a few months ago and it stopped the pain and everything but I had a bad reaction to it so I had to stop it. So really the only thing I do is use aspercreme on my shoulders and neck and ibuprofen.

If you dot mind send me a message tomorrow and jet me know how the doc appt goes. You can private message me if you like.

It does sound like we have a lot in common with this. I hope all goes well tomorrow and thanks for chatting. Have a nice evening and hope to hear from you tomorrow.

I will let you know what my ENT Says. God willing he has answers for me.

      Have a good night.. 😊
