Random throbbing head pain and pressure in right side

Posted , 138 users are following.

For over a month now, I've had an infrequent throbbing pain & pressure on the right side of head. It appears randomly, and occurs much more frequently when I'm stressed. Although, when I feel fine it will still appear, just not as frequently.  It's always on the right side of my head, near the top but will occasionally be at the back of my head too. I will feel it every single time when I wake up, without fail. That's the only time I can guarantee it'll be felt.

I've had a CT scan done a few weeks ago which came out completely clear. I was thinking that it was my sinuses acting up, so I went to an ENT (Ear Nose & Throat) specialist, but they couldn't find anything wrong.

I don't know what else it could possibly be. I'm starting to think that it may be my neck, but I'm not entirely sure ...

Anyway, here's a summary:

* Throbbing in head on the right side

* Infrequent (appears at random)

* Appears every day

* Brings my mood down completely whenever it occurs

* Had a CT scan; was completely clear

* Sinuses are completely fine, and are clear

Please help.

    I have got a prolactinoma ( benign tumour in my pituitary gland) and have also been recently been experiencing this type of pain. Has anyone else suffered similarly?

    I've been having this random dull painful pain on the top of the right backside of my head for at least 10 years. The dull painful throbbing can last from 20 seconds to a minute but usually for 20 sec.

    After the dull pain a burning radiating feeling ocurs in the same area but then expands and then disapates quickly

    It typically happens in clusters. Maybe 5 to 10 ten in a day and then nothing for months

    Doctors tell me they have no diagnosis even after MRIs and CAT scans

    Im clueless but I know when's it severe the initial pain can sometimes drop me to my knees.

    I would love a diagnosis

    HI, I was just reading your question from last year about the pain at right top of your head when you wake with pain behind right eye. I've been having absolutely exactly the same as this. I have a Dr's appointment for 23Rd Feb. I'm hoping that you have A positive outcome to this? I am also quite worried. I don't smoke but I did on and off years ago and hardly drink anymore and if I do its two pints max. I'm a long distance runner 57 years old and therefore fitter than most. What's wrong with me?

    Hi , Did you go to a Nurologist? It might be Migrains triggering your pain. With what you told me the brain will cause much pain even though you had a c scan. I am on the same boat with the pain but it's my sinues. I know you said yours were clear. Look up the info for the Nurologist he or she will help you. Please let me know how your doing with the pain? Hi Jenni, I saw my doctor yesterday. With great relief he has assured me that the symptoms I have do not really identify with a brain tumour. He checked my balance and hand eye coordination. I did have a cough and cold about a month ago. I had headache with that. He is suggesting neuralgia at the moment. I have hot prickly pain on my scalp although usually on the cheek area he said it can appear elsewhere. The headache mainly behind my eye is linked in somehow. And so blood tests with results Monday week and he says go back to him in a month but it may go in two to three weeks? Or can remain or resurface again due to nervous situations or stress? And so it's a waiting game. One thing I've found that exercise, as I'm a long distance runner, clears my head. So maybe it is governed by neurological conditions? I'll keep up posted. Regards, Phil

    Hi, Maybe you should go to a Nurologist they can help you find what it is. Do you have congestion? With all the pain your having this sounds like facial pain and pain in the head. I had a c scan done and nothing showed up. Then I went to a ent doctor and found my pain was in my sinues. Deviated septum. Can hardly get a full breath with my congestion and pain . It affects your ears and neck, eyes , teeth. Also affects head with constant pain. I hope you have a pain free day. Let me know if you went to a Nurologist? No pain is like this. I get snapping of the nose. Sometimes it whistles. Jeannie4006

      Hi Jeannie, thank you for getting back to me. The pains are still switching between two strips on the top of my head. One central to the front and one parallel but on the right side between my ear and the other strip. Sometimes a throbbing in the top centre of my head. If that stops I get a steady dull ache behind my right eye that is more intense with light. Unbearable in direct sunlight. If non of those I get a pain all along my right cheek bone from my ear to my get eye socket. This is tender to touch. The strange thing is that if I go on a 10K or further long distance run the pains all completely go but return in some form within two hours. If I raise my eyebrows there is a soreness as the skin wrinkles on top of my head. My Doctor has suggested neuralgia? I have to go back to him 1st March as there is no change. Some days are good others I awake with it like a non alcohol hangover! Very strange and I'm frustrated with it now.

    I am experiencing the same problems, but I had a fall in December which the right side of my head hit a concrete step. At first the headaches were intermittent, but I had a difficult time moving my head, my doctor attributed it to a possible strain. In January, the headaches became more frequent, and when they ocurred I was experience a slight shift in personality, (anger was the most predominent, irritation, agitation.) In February, they had become severe at times, along with the personality shift. I could not stand to be around people when the headaches came, and am in a highly agitated state. Vision on the right side has also been comprimised, Periphrial vision is severly decreased.

    *MRI was inconclusive, (done without contrast)

    *No further neck pain.

    *Daily headaches, (range in level of pain)

    *Emotional shift, (anger, agitation, impatients,)

    *Eye exam showed loss of vision right side, to wit. glasses cannot correct.

    Further concerns are I am a Diabetic, morbidly obese, formerly a heavy smoker, and down to one cigarette a week, (This actually keeps me from gorging on foods, and patches and gum do not work).

     My next step is since nothing was found physiologically, then I am going to see psychological help for reduction in stress.

    Hi, I had the same systoms. I went and have a c scan on my head. Came back clear. Went to see ENT. I had sinus surgery. STILL HAVING PAIN on right side of head and pain and pressure on right side of Nose . THE SURGERY DID nothing.I still have pressure in my head and nose. I went to a Nurologist. That deals with head pain. They put me on migrain meds. It makes me sick. I stopped them. After surgery my teeth starting aching. I know it's all connected. I just need a complete diagnosed. My family doctor said I have Termiginal Nuraglia. Nerve Pain. I have had 3 diagnosed. I am so depressed with this pain. I GO back to my ENT in April. He has to give me pain meds for this pain. Hope you have a pain free day. Jeannie4006

      Hi... I just joined the forum as I noticed the symptoms are exact same as mine. It started with me 5 months ago and after much ado with all kinds of doctors, I was sent to Neurologist. And just like you, all reports came clear thankfully. She diagnosed me with Trigeminal Neuralgia, even though nothing appeared to be compressed in my MRI etc. I have been taking Nerves - which is Gabapentin. I don't know what your doctor prescribed but, it has definitely worked on me after as few trials on dosages. I started off with 100 mg but what actually worked on me was 600

      mg which my doctor split between the day and night as 200 & 400mg respectively. I did my research and fortunately unlike many others this one has no side effects except Drowsiness - to start with it knocks you out completely ??,

      If it's not the medication you ve been prescribed I suggest ask your doctor to maybe prescribe it if it's Trigeminal Neuralgia

      I wanted to ask, do you feel any pain on the side of your eye? Because I feel it on occasions still and am wondering if I need to get my eyes checked out again, just in case!

      Hi Jeannie, mine has very slowly but surely has now gone away completely. I was going to leave my Doctor a message last week but it sort of started coming back but at the moment it has actually totally gone. I'll just answer your question. The pain behind my right eye was what I believe now to be a migraine. Hence the ' hangover with no alcohol' syndrome. My right eye also seemed slower in movement and blinking. Plus I couldn't open it as much as the other one.The uncomfortable tender sensation all on the centre and to the right of my forehead and temple area was similar to severe sunburnt skin with a prickly soreness. I also had two colds in succession. Following the first I had Coldstream that I have as a permanent thing that occurs with some colds and is incurable apparently. The neuralgia seemed to come at the same time and I think that the coldsore virus was part of or triggered it. The last cold I again had the sores but as they became neutralised and started to go that seemed to coincide with my neuralgia going. My Doctor said that my neuralgia may come back and I think that if it is linked to the coldsore virus that I am permanently infected with then my Doctor may believe that if and when I get a cold virus that triggers the sores that my neuralgia may come back then? I've not heard of what you've been diagnosed with. I wonder if your head issues are partially a migraine? And partially a viral infection like mine. I had a full blood test which came back as fine and it was able to rule out 'Giant Cell Arteritis' which is ' inflammation of the Arteries that can effect your eye and lead to blindness. I'd urge you to have the blood tests with a view to ruling that condition out and that test will also bring your stress down which would be good for you. I am keen to hear your progress with this. Keep in touch and good luck. Regards Phil
