Random throbbing head pain and pressure in right side

Posted , 138 users are following.

For over a month now, I've had an infrequent throbbing pain & pressure on the right side of head. It appears randomly, and occurs much more frequently when I'm stressed. Although, when I feel fine it will still appear, just not as frequently.  It's always on the right side of my head, near the top but will occasionally be at the back of my head too. I will feel it every single time when I wake up, without fail. That's the only time I can guarantee it'll be felt.

I've had a CT scan done a few weeks ago which came out completely clear. I was thinking that it was my sinuses acting up, so I went to an ENT (Ear Nose & Throat) specialist, but they couldn't find anything wrong.

I don't know what else it could possibly be. I'm starting to think that it may be my neck, but I'm not entirely sure ...

Anyway, here's a summary:

* Throbbing in head on the right side

* Infrequent (appears at random)

* Appears every day

* Brings my mood down completely whenever it occurs

* Had a CT scan; was completely clear

* Sinuses are completely fine, and are clear

Please help.

    Occipital Neuralgia: Occipital neuralgia is a distinct type of headache characterized by piercing, throbbing, or electric-shock-like chronic pain in the upper neck, back of the head, and behind the ears, usually on one side of the head.  Typically, the pain of occipital neuralgia begins in the neck and then spreads upwards.  Some individuals will also experience pain in the scalp, forehead, and behind the eyes.  Their scalp may also be tender to the touch, and their eyes especially sensitive to light.  The location of pain is related to the areas supplied by the greater and lesser occipital nerves, which run from the area where the spinal column meets the neck, up to the scalp at the back of the head.  The pain is caused by irritation or injury to the nerves, which can be the result of trauma to the back of the head, pinching of the nerves by overly tight neck muscles, compression of the nerve as it leaves the spine due to osteoarthritis, or tumors or other types of lesions in the neck.  Localized inflammation or infection, gout, diabetes, blood vessel inflammation (vasculitis), and frequent lengthy periods of keeping the head in a downward and forward position are also associated with occipital neuralgia.  In many cases, however, no cause can be found.  A positive response (relief from pain) after an anesthetic nerve block will confirm the diagnosis.

    Thought this might help, it did me.

    I do not think this is a migraine. I used to get those all the times and from what your describing its not a migraine. I have also been experiencing this but not as common as you are. I have to lay on the floor. If you still do this please do tell if you feel like the right side of your head popped or bursts like a balloon. Because this is happening to me and they said it might be bleeding in the brain that could lead to a stroke.... So if that is the truth I'm very sorry.

    I posted the same symptoms on this site. I was scared to go to MD, convinced it was bad. I finally called my Dr. He said it's probably a headache...What? I was really upset that he didn't insist I come in and order a bunch of tests. I started to take 2 Ibuprophen, after a few times it went away! Gone. I don't understand...but it didn't come back. Maybe it was stress? Hopefully yours will disappear too.

    Hi, same thing here. Reading all the messages, I believe for some, it could be a form of nerve damage, and/or inflammation in the neck & spine.Another poster mentioned "Occipital Neuralgia". Well it seems, neck pain or injuries can produce these kinds of symptoms. I'm investigating and will return. But, in the meantime I will pray to the Lord our God for all sufferers, and here is a link to WebMD, with explanations of the condition:

      I have the nerve issues, whiplashed neck many times, radiculopathy, and yes it causes me occipital Neuralgia, with Trigeminal neuralgia because I have a brain tumor sitting on my brain stem that causes pseudo seizures,I too pray for everyone.

      Hi Karen, I went to my chiropractor yesterday and confirmed my theory. I told him about my pain and my findings online. He adjusted my neck and observed my C4 disc was not right. He applied pressure and massage to the area. He also adjusted my back and limbs. I had the best sleep I've had in a month last night! Minimal pain and no tossing and turning. I have yet to have a pain in my head this morning. My doctor also said that ice packs in the area of the neck: C2-C6 for 20 minutes at a time, would help with inflammation. I don't know if this info will help you. But, it may help others here. I'll pray for you Karen. God's blessings and healing power be on you! Amen. Ron

    I have exactly these symptoms and I know what caused them. Look up the symptoms for 'exertion headaches'. I got mine from using a new rowing machine and going at it too hard while also holding my breath. I felt a sudden brief pain/pressure in my head and then all of the symptoms you have listed. Exertion headaches can be caused by any extreme work out pressure, running, lifting heavy objects (weight lifters get them) and even from the exertion of having sex. The sudden pressure (made worse if you hold your breath) can expand blood vessels in your head and that can put pressure on the meninges layer and the nerves in that region can then give the kinds of pains you describe.The symptoms get worse if you lay down or lower your head because your are increasing blood pressure to your head. If you can identify any exertion you may have done, try to stop doing it and rest. My doctor told me it can take from 2 weeks to 6 months to clear up. He prescribed a painkiller that's a bit stronger than OTC brands. After 2 weeks things have eased off a bit but not cleared completely. My advice is don;t panic, go see your doctor. Get a CAT Scan if you are still worried.
