Hi for the last couple of months I have experienced a rapid thumping sound in might right ear, like a  very fast heart beat.

it only seems to happen at night and is driving me mad.

some nights it wakes me up At 3 or 4 in the morning.

i have been to my GP and he is arranging for me to visit ENT specialist at my local hospital and a head scan.

does anyone know what this could be?

Hi, I am waiting for a CT scan & to see an ENT specialist but when I put my symptoms in a checker it came back as tinnitus. The noise is beating along with my heart beat & the reason it is louder when you lay down is cos it is quiet then & your mind is not focusing on other stuff. When I spoke to my doctor about the magnesium deficiency she looked at me like I was crazy so I will have to give that a try & not tell her till ive got results!

Hi Andrew.I found the post from LizzyD very helpful.I started with the thumping noise in my left ear weeks ago.At first it was only now and then but one weekend it started and went on for maybe 3 days and nights without stopping.I bought the Magnesium tablets myself. The odd thing is,the day before it stopped I had been getting really stressed out whilst making a Birthday cake, suddenly the thumping changed to an odd sort of buzzing "Tune".it only lasted a matter of 30 seconds, stopped and then one single buzz, that's when I noticed the thumping had stopped too.

The only other thing I did that was different was,I had been to the Physio for treatment to a pulled muscle and I also had Acupuncture, whether or not this had some kind of effect I don't know, but the thumping noise has not returned 2 weeks later.I hope this may be of some help to you.

I have been suffering with thumping in my right ear for months and months, maybe even a couple of years. I also have tinnitus in both, so constant ringing. The trigger for the thumping seems to be sound or certain pitches. I am completely fed up with it now. I will make an appointment with my GP but I will try the magnesium, because I also get muscle twitches in my lower legs. I wander if this is all stress related. I am pleased to have come across this forum because I now feel I'm not the only one with this wierd thing going on in my ear.

Hi snow queen, I am new to this forum and when I came across your story it was almost completely similar to mine. I have had tinnitus for years also but within the last 3 months have began to be bothered with this thumping in my left ear. Everyone seems to have something good to say about the magnesium therapy, how about you? I also have a ent appointment in a couple of days

Tinnitus (funny noise in the ear) is very common. Most often this is temporary and it does not affect the function of the ear in any way.

However, where there is unilateral hearing loss and tinnitus, one needs to report this to his/her GP, especially when younger than 70. Acoustic neuroma is a condition which must be diagnosed early, but it grows slowly usually and it is unlikely to cause problems when it starts in the old age. Acoustic neuroma needs to be removed surgically in order to avoid further local complications.

The most common causes for the appearance of tinnitus is poor hearing in that particular ear: either because of blockage with wax, or an ear infection, a middle ear problem, or because of wear and tear of the hearing nerve. As a result of this the ear will be more preoccupied with sounds coming from inside the human body like the pulsation of blood vessels, the blood flow, etc.

By correcting the hearing in that ear it is very likely that the tinnitus will stop. So, by removing the wax, clearing the ear infection or fitting a hearing aid you might be able to keep the tinnitus under control.

Free hearing tests are easily available now through some comercial chain shops. Make sure you visit your practice nurse to check that your ears are clean before you attend for a hearing test.

GPChelmsford..what does unilateral hearing loss/tinnitus mean please?? Is that both ears being affected??

I have booked a hearing test which is free, at my local pharmacy. Not til June though.

The thumping in my right ear was causing me problems working in the classroom due to the high pitches of the children and in fact I am now retiring. I am only 46 ..

sorry kath...unilateral means on one side.

so loss of hearing in one ear (which you could easily check when you speak on the 'phone by comparing the two ears) plus tinnitus in the same ear must be checked by an ENT specialist and often it needs a scan of the inner ears unless there is an infection or wax present.

you could also check your hearing online if you go to the Action on Hearing Loss website. They are a national British charity.

Mmmm.thank you..I think they are as bad as each other. The thumping is worse in my right ear and ringing in both. I will see what comes of the hearing test and go from there..I've got time on my hands now!! Thank you so much..

i should have guessed 'uni' meant one!! Thank you :-)

Hi, Andrew! I have the SAME problem, but the thumping started in my left ear back in August of last year. I have been to my doctor SEVERAL times complaining of my ears hurting & the constant thumping. I would get a round of antibiotics, but it never seemed to go away.

Tonight I decided to Google it & stumbled on this site. And I'm glad I did. Last month I was diagnosed with a Vitamin D deficiency & have started the Vitamin D therapy. But since I've been taking 50,000iu of Vitamin D a week, my face gets red & flushed. But doing further research, have discovered that an underlying Magnesium deficiency is more than likely the cause. I also read that you are supposed to do a Vitamin D & Magnesium therapy at the same time.

After reading all the posts & comments on this thread, I'm going to add Magnesium into my therapy. Hopefully this will fix my problem as well?

Hi all, Just adding my twopennys worth to this discussion. I have since yesterday 30/3/15, started experiencing this "thumping sound" in my left ear as described by many others here. I was chainsawing on 29/3 and am assuming that this is what brought it on. Regretfully, I did not wear ear protection as I am not a "regular chainsawer". As other contributors have commented it is really annoying. Again, as with other contributors, it seems to go away for a while if I press in and hold my left ear. I am going to give it a week or so to see if it resolves itself and if it hasn't, go to the Doctor. After the week has elapsed I will also give the magnesium option a go as it appears to have worked for other contributors. I will post an update here at some stage. Whilst writing thanks to all the previous contributors who have helped to shed light on this for me.

Just wanted to update my status.....I'm still taking the magnesium tablet each day and the thumping has been gone for a about a month now. On occasion I hear what sounds like a cricket chirping in the same ear, but it only lasts for a second.. Otherwise no problems...
