Hi for the last couple of months I have experienced a rapid thumping sound in might right ear, like a very fast heart beat.
it only seems to happen at night and is driving me mad.
some nights it wakes me up At 3 or 4 in the morning.
i have been to my GP and he is arranging for me to visit ENT specialist at my local hospital and a head scan.
does anyone know what this could be?

I did try Magnesion Oxide without luck and also a triple magnesium complex (magnesium oxide, magnesium aspertate and magnesium citrate) without luck as well.
The thumping noise (also referred to as: clicking, popping, morse code, jack hammer, MRI thumping) started with me three months ago. I had this insanely irritating thumping noise almost 24-7. Almost always seemed to start as soon as I sat down in the evening to watch TV, reading and almost always as soon as I layed down to sleep. If I managed to get to sleep without the clicking, I would be awoken smack in the middle of the night.
My ENT wasn't able to provide me any relief from this constant noise. I desperately became my own advocate. With the help of this forum and an online web site for Fauquier ENT Consultants of Virginia describing an irregular ear clicking or vibration noise, I found my relief!
I hope this helps, magnesium citrate also helped me with IBS symptoms of constipation as well as leg and toe cramps. It may not be for everyone... check with your doctor to make sure it is right for you.

thanks for advice regarding magnesium citrate. I will give it go. I have been eating Brazil nuts and almonds and find that has worked for me for a good spell but the knocking does re-occur sometimes. It is an awful complaint. I will definitely order some of the tablets.

I happened on this forum because I started again some candida killing sups today and pretty much 20 minutes in the thumping started. Haven't tried the sups in almost a year. Thought to myself, oh that's right, that's why I stopped taking these. Had an extreme flairup of candida past few days because i started an alpha lipoic acid protocol for chelation (mercury chelation). ALA is magic to me but only side effect is a rise in candida.
I came across one post, one line, elsewhere, different forum, buried amidst reams of posts on magnesium helping this one lady.
I went and filled up a small 1.5 foot by 1 foot plastic container (wife uses it to store christmas decorations, etc. It's about 6 inches tall. Sorry for the Brits who use the metric system. Anyhow I filled it up 1.5 inches with water and put in a lump of magnesium (epson salt) and soaked my feet in it. Only covered the bottom of my feet. The feet absorb it right in. I kept it in for 20 minutes and sure enough the thumping went away. It's magic. I struggled for years with it.
My take is this. For me. The body is struggling with the ALA protocol and the reaction of dying of Candida, two separate things going on. I knew that chelating could deplete magnesium; talked about quite a lot in the ALA (Dr. Cutler) forums. I despise oral magnesium. I had always liked the transdermal approach. It will never reach a point of overdose and diarrea transdermally. You can bring your magnesium levels back to normal after a while, a few days to 1 week through transdermal. It's quite powerful and magnesium happens to be one of the elements that is quiet successful with this approach. The feet are great for it, don't need whole body bath, etc.
I just wanted to pass this along as support for this forum's discovery and to offer another way to take the mag.
I know about mag and how I like to approach it from other experiments with myself but I never had the thumping when I was trying the magnesium so I never connected the two; deficiency in mag due to load on the body and nerve and muscle affects in the ear.
Greatful for this forum. Usually it would take at least two days of staying away from the thing I introduced into my body before the thumping would go away, if I only took one dose. If I had been on it for a week and let the thumping continue, then a week to a few weeks before it would go away. Now it makes sense that my body was in that time rebuilding its magnesium.
Anything taxing on the body can diminish our mag.

In my right ear I hear a sound like a very fast heartbeat as you said. I will go to the ENT and if I reach anywhere I will share the result.I have a few questions for you and I would really appreciate it if you could answer:
First: Did you finally find out what the problem was? What was it? What is your advise?
Second: I can reproduce the sound. It is not rando´m I think; I can hear it by positioning my right ear on a pillow. Have you checked if you can reproduce the sound too? I am asking this because I think the randomness might be important.
Many thanks in advance
