it only seems to happen at night and is driving me mad.

some nights it wakes me up At 3 or 4 in the morning.

i have been to my GP and he is arranging for me to visit ENT specialist at my local hospital and a head scan.

does anyone know what this could be?

Hi...yes it has helped a lot. Has not completely gone away but is much better! I did go to an ENT...and he said ears good just like my GP. Not concerned at all. He seemed to think it was rushing of blood that I am hearing. Lots Of main blood vessels and artery right next to ear and I had just changed Blood pressure meds...increased! I had thought it might have been that ..but not sure! He said to only come back to him if it worsened. It has not. I do still have it occasionally at night and when I first get up in morning...but it stops shortly! I have also decreased my caffeine and continue to take b complex and magnesium citrate....along with multi vitamin, calcium with vitamin D, And omega fish oil! I really believe this all has helped calm it all down! Seems also that the more worked up I would get about it the worse it would get. Somewhat anxiety related...for sure! So relax and take supplements. I also walk everyday for 30 minutes! All important! Good luck. Hope it helps you!

I am so glad I found this forum. Two days ago I was woken in the early hours by a loud drumming in my head. Next day I had a pulsating sound in my left ear. It went on all day without a break. I searched the internet to see what it was and found you. Thank goodness for that, I was so worried. Anyway, I went to my local chemist and bought magnesium orotate, they didnt have the citrate but that didnt matter as it is the magnesium that is important. I took one straight away. It didnt stop immediately but later I realised it had. A few hours later it started again so I took another before going to bed. I slept soundly and when I woke there was no banging or pulsating. It hasnt come back at all today. Thank you so much everyone.

This past August I was hit by a huge wave in my right ear so hard it knowcked me down.  That same night I awoke to excruciating pain from what I thought was water in my ear.  My ear has never been the same and when I went to the doctor they put me on 2 rounds of antibiotics.  The ear fullness went away but now every time I yawn, burp or hiccup I get this vibration or whooshing or thumping sound in my ear.  It is driving me to insanity - literally.  I went to ENT and their is no fluid in my ear, no infection, no wax NOTHING!  He gave me muscle relaxers that do nothing but make me so tired I forget about it.  Lastly, they tell me it could be TMJ.  I do grind my teeth and I have been wearing a night gaurd at night but still I et this vibration thumping in my ear that will not go away!!! Does anyone know what this is?????

Angela, sounds like some form of pulsaltile tinnitus (disturbance in blood flow to ear). The wooshing sound that you hear is probably blood flow.

Need the ent to do more specific tests in locating possible forms of pulsaltile tinnitus. Ps If you Google pulsaltile tinnitus it will make more sense and make you feel better. Have faith that God will not leave you in this.

Hi. I have also been having this thumping sound in my right ear for a few years. Went to 3 ENTs, the last one did an MRI for me. All could not detect anything wrong with me. The last ENT just told me that "it so happens that your blood vessel is situated close to your right ear, so you can hear your pulse". I told the ENT that I only started hearing this sound a few years ago, not my whole life. How could a new blood vessel grow suddenly close to my right ear?

Was recommended to go for Chinese accupunture and am still hesitating to do so.

Jaw inflammed or muscular then it pushes into your eustatian tube. No new vessels grew. Then the torture begins.soft mouth splint helps. I do wonder about acupuncture as well.i never did it. Im on day four right now. I have had it in the past .it went away and it will again. Acupuncture to tmj areas. If you go and it works please pm me. Id love to know.

Hello everyone.  I have had the same sound in my right ear for months now.  I am waiting to go to the ENT in January.  I was sent to the audiologist in December and told there was nothing wrong.  She refered me to ENT.  I take magnisium already daily and it had not helped with the sound.  I have the noise both day and night.  I am also already on anxiety meds, so no need to go down that route.  I tried the OTC ear drops for tinitus and all it did was make me feel like I had water in my ear and the sound continued.  Anyone get any answers from a Dr yet?

Hi Radeon, sorry to hear about the bouts of tinnitus or thumping in your ear that you have been experiencing. I have had tinnitus for about 18 years and have recently began experiencing a new sound. I know that your biggest challenge is to not concentrate on the sound. Here is some good advice that you may already know

      1. Keep some sound in the room with you most of the time like television, radio, etc because the brain can multitask only so well and you will find yourself forgetting to listen for it.

      2. Night time is the most difficult time for most people with this complication.Sleep in the room with white noise like a fan to mask the sound. It really works ,try it. (may have to sleep in a separate room if it disturbs others).

3.May try taking a antihistamine daily like Claritin or Allegra for drainage that can occur in canals and cause problems while you wait for your upcoming appointment with the ent.

Most of all don't dispair, many people have had the problem and eventually get to the bottom of it. Mine only bothers me sometimes and eventually it won't at all. Trust in God and hang in there.

I have this problem too. I tried to look past it but I couldn't handle it cause the noise is so annoying. The reason I'm worried is that I'm only 17. I don't wanna be short of hearing in my twenties. I haven't spoken to my GP or doctor about it, do you think it would be wise to go and get it looked at? Did anyone else get paranoid that it was a bug tapping it's little hairy legs on your eardrum? Cause I sure as hell had some horrid thoughts about what it might be. PLEASE HELP.

Pulsitile tinnitus. I have had it the last few days its maddening. Its from the jaw. Inflames and pushed eustatian tubes and then you get this noise, but feel it as well. I have had it before it does calm down. I use a custom made mouth splint. But if i nap with no gaurd or hold a bad posture too long it flares up. It is so torturous. Maxillary surgeon who specializes in tmj  can help you if your ent finds everything normal....put on a fan.I keep praying it calms itself down.it has in the past.i had it once for months until i got a mouth splint. Praying every second it relaxes itself and goes away. Im on day four right now. I do know i messed up so it returned and i am being very careful now so it can go away again. The custom made soft mouth splints are costly. So etimes you get a good one and its great then you remake it after a year and it isnt as good for some reason.

I to have similiar symptoms. I had a severe ear ache last week that i later was told there was an infection. It took them five days to tell me this which i already knew because of all the fluid drainage. After ten fluid drops twice a day at twelve hours apart plus two pills per day at twelve hours apart finally the drainage and ear ache ceased but now this constant thumping on the left side of my head where the ear ache was. In addition my hearing is almost nonexistant. I was already wearing a hearing aide in the left ear so i had to stop wearing it because of the drainage. I finally have an upcoming appointment with an ENT. The only time i do not hear this noise is when i am asleep. Thank God for His grace. After giving it some serious thought the only conclusion i arrived at is it's the ear drum. At first i thought it was high blood pressue but not so. The ear drum or connecting tubes are having some type of spasms.

I just stumbled into your post today and I would like to share my story it may be too late but might help someone . I started having pumping noises as well when I was very young maybe aged 10. I used to try to describe to my parents what I was feeling and everyone didn't really take me seriously and I always thought I had water or fluid inside. After about a few years I saw an ear specialist who said I had fluid in my ear and I had grommets put in my right ear they fell off . This was done about 5 times. I then moved towns was transfered to ENT by the GP who at first had prescribed antibiotics with no help. Wrong diagnosis altogether. I saw different junior doctors and they just couldn't figure out what was wrong I had 6 grommets put in no change and my hearing was going down and the pumping noise was continuing and driving me mad especially when I relaxed or was in a quiet environment . After a year I was then referred to the consultant who took an interest in my condition. An MRI revealed I had a tumour on my ear drum so this noise I was hearing was blood flow to the tumour. This was biopsies and then I went through surgery to have it removed. After it was removed the pumping noise stopped although my hearing is very low. This was in 2008. I was supposed to go back for more surgery to try and correct my hearing but after about 9 surgeries I was fed up and happy that at least the sound is gone. 8 years later I am considering going back for more treatment to help with my hearing
