RE: Radial End Replacement

Hi all,

Looking fo some advice. I fell off my flat garge roof when the edge of the roof gave way whilst cleaning leaves off it. Unfortunatley landing on my outstretched hand which caused me to dislocate my elbow joint. I had it re-positioned on the day (August Bank Hoilday Monday). After several weeks going back and forth to both physio and Doctors appointments they realised that the fracture had not set properly as I had limited motion up to the bicep and also reduced rolling movement in my wrist. At ths point (and a lot of crying on my part) they suggested the replacement of the radial end joint, which I had no real choice but to agree.

I had the operation just over two weeks ago which I was told went well, but I am very worried and frightened about the outcome as I still have limited arm motion up to bicep (I can exercise to just over half way) and still tentative with the radial motion on my wrist I still have swelling post op. on the elbow itself so I appreciate that this takes time, they also hadto fix ligament damage which they did without needing to perform extra work on my wrist. But just need some reassurance from anyone who may have had the same as I feel quite isolated and very frightened about my outcome.

Can anyone please help.

thanks in anticipation

Dom.

Dom, I had the same damage to my radial head only mine was crushed due to a fall. I also had a separated elbow with severed tensions. They replaced my radial head, I was in a brace for 4 months and not allowed to turn or rotate my arm for 3 months. This is a serious injury, your only 2 weeks post op your going to have swelling (ice was my best friend). Good luck with the healing process and keep your head up, 2 weeks is far to soon to expect much in the way of healing.

hi all of my fellow injured elbow peeps ... i shattered my radial head nov 2016 had a metal implant placed. during my surgery he put me under cut me open and realized he did not have the right size implant in the setup. he had to contact a neighboring town hospital and have them bring it. so my 1 1/2 hr surgery turned into a 5 hour surgery. needless to say its been a nightmare since that moment. iam only 29 ,27at the time of surgery.

im curious what kind of pain level peole are at 2 yrs post op i do not have but maybe 30% rom back and extreme pain in the joint, wrist and fingers. i have gone back to the surgeon who did the procedure and he wants me to see a specialist but i cant because i have no insurance... i am miserable. just wanna feel normal.

hi crystal. i shattered my radial head in december 2016. it was actually an open fracture(my ulna which broke went thru my skin), and I suffered an injury called "the terrible triad".

anyhow, i had surgery where they put a plate to connect my broken ulna. and the next day they cut me open again and repalced my radial head with a metal one. after the surgery ans my recovery i lost my ability for pronation and supination(which turned out to be caused by something called heterotopic ossification-which is when bone grows in the wrong place-, basically bone matter grew in an area of my joint that blocked my ability for pronation and supination.) I also lost a lot of flexion and extension motion. So, about three months later I had another surgery to remove the heterotopic ossification, in which the surgeon also forced my arm to straighten a lot more than I could prior while I was under anesthesia. After that surgery I regained most of my probation and supination range of motion, and significant extension and flexion(I now lack about 20%degrees in both flexion and extension-I now have about 80% range of motion.)

As far as bone reabsorption goes, I didn’t hear anything about that. As far as pain goes, I don’t have much, unless I push my limits on the edge of my range of motion.

I still would like to regain my range of motion.

I hope you find satisfactory healing.
