re-sprained foot second time, ankle is now unstable.

one week ago i flew downstairs and took a huge sprain, no breaks on x-ray but the doctor booked a scan because suspected some other damage.
was splinted and sent home with a prescription for a f-f plaster when swelling reduces.
the splint was very unstable. 2 days ago i fell from crutches and re-sprained the same foot. was painful and the foot liked like dislocated so i went back to the doctor. the splint was changed for a better one, probably the ligament's damage is worse now.
i feel the foot very unstable, when they changed the splint was very painful so i hope they can avoid movements. can they scan the foot with the splint on and immediately apply the cast?
how long does it takes for the swelling to reduce? i'm constantly with foot in air.

Seated scooter. Have a look. Nice to be mobile if crutches aren't your cup of tea in early days. I hated crutches
Knee scooter then walker- all terrain. Huge wheels.@(*+*)@

Hi Oscar, I'd be fairly sceptical if I was you. First they sad it wasn't broken, now full leg cast , No Surgery? Sounds like a lick and a promise to me. Any problems go straight to hospital, otherwise you'll end up like me . into 38th week and still not there. Surgery put me on right road. Demand xrays to see process of bone growth. Ask for CT scan to prove it. Don't take NO for an answer. We all feel for your plight. Be pro active!

i'm getting used to this huge cast, but it still scares me everytime i look at it.
i went back to my GP doctor, she assisted me right after the injury, diagnosed it as a fracture and immobilized.
she explained that the break is bad even if it doesn't require surgery. instability and impossibility to remove the shoe after the injury are bad signs. with the second fall the bones moved so healing never started untill the manipulation during cast application. she prescribed 6 months stop from sport activity, then said that when this cast comes off (2 weeks) i'll be given a below-knee cast, or maybe a walker boot. that was a bad new! i didn't expect because my leg feels great now.
yesterday i saw another specialist (suggested by the gp) he gave my diagnosis "tarsus-malleolar fracture with closed reduction" it means i broke the ankle on both sides. this is why it was so painful and floppy and needed the long cast. he also explained that the fracture was set back in the correct position so a surgery wasn't necessary. i should start exercises and weght bearing asap.
then he mentioned that the worst part is the recovery of the ligaments (never mentioned by gp) that could require a nasty surgery.
so i'm confused and don't know what expect at next visit. at least they agree that the surgery wasn't necessary.
my ankle is perfect, but it hurts when i try to move the toes, so i can only wait and see!

Ouch! Ligaments and Tendons can take a hellish long time to heal. Is your break healing? Do they show you the x-rays?
I wonder how long you have to stay in the cast for? Movement of toes, even lightly, helps to prevent blood clots, and to help with flexibility. Ask Dr and Physio where to from here? You've had a rough time like me. I hope they have the NO surgery backed up with evidence it's healing. Mine too was shoved into place more or less, 4 months later a total non union, and surgery. 9 months after initial snap, I'm in a good place. I can stand in one spot without falling over for an hour. March on spot. Get or demand proof and answers. Take prescribed meds as directed. No need to be brave.
Only problem I have is that my bone is unusually soft.
Good luck!

i find this discussion very interesting oscar.
if i understand correctly you had problems removing the shoe after the 2nd sprain.
how was the leg immobilized?
4 months ago i broke my ankle and the backslab splint was unconfortable.
today i crushed my foot with a rock, it was splinted because was absolutely impossible to remove the shoe.
at emergency they told me the shoe helps keeping bones in place, so reinforced the shoe and told to go and see a specialist.
i have some doubts, this fracture looks worse than the old one. i don't know if it's a good idea to have the splint (wich is quite ok) changed
with the backslab. because i have a 3 hours roadtrip to go back home and see a specialist.
what would you suggest?
thanks

me too had problem with the backslab, infact i removed and put the emergency splint back on.
we used the shoe to help reducing movements. but then i slipped off the crutches falling hard on the broken ankle and made it worse.
the foot got more swollen and every movement was excruciating because the bone moved a little out of position. after the scan they put another backslab, then the closed cast.
i'd say the backslab splint is unconfortable but more protective than the emergency splint i had when fell 2nd time.
if looks bad and they told you it's serious i'd go and see a doctor asap.

thanks
it matches my experience, when i broke the ankle i didn't notice the instability i suffer in this fracture. feeling like bones moving inside the foot.
i saw doctor, he is worried with my ankle, and said it's too swollen but nothing unusual. is it normal to delay treatment due to swelling?

finally the cast is going to be cut!
the ankle feels great, it only hurts when i move toes.
i think they'll put me in a boot to start walking, because when i had to put the foot down to balance and avoid another fell it was painful. so i know it isn't back 100%.
anyway i'll bring a wide shoe and a sock.
i think the foot is still a bit swollen because the cast still feels quite tight, and i suppose the ankle will be stuck.

Go for the boot. Different types too. Safer. Don't want to go there again.
Swelling takes months if not years to go away. The quicker you get your foot down safely as advised by Dr and Physio, the quicker it will heal.
After around 20 months I can walk slowly, raise up on my toes and walk on toes with crutches as a support. I feel like $1,000,000. 10 months of hell. Definite light at the end of tunnel.
You'll be fine. A good dose of Patience and you're be up and about in no time. Great attitude to include wide shoe. I bought some basketball boots.
Good luck

i had a small delusion, even if not 100% unexpected
they x-rayed and cut the cast. as soon as the leg was lifted off the thing i understood something was wrong.
it was just too painful and bruised, then doctor confirmed the bones are in place just not healed enough.
so we agreed to go with the short cast, it's the fiber one so light and fast to dry.
no movement was necessary but i can feel the difference with the long cast i had before. the foot feels less stable. the boot would have been impossible.
this short cast is much lighter and easier to crutch around, so at least a step in good direction.

i had to have a ligament reconstruction because my ankle was too unstable, after more than 2 months in the cam walker boot the situation was improved.
but during physio i noted that my ankle never recovered full stability, i had to constantly use the ankle brace.
this summer i forced myself but overdid and started to have sharp pains, i had x rays done thys week and found out i suffer bad osteoporosis in that leg.
pain is caused by stress fracture to the calcaneus and i was prescribed 4 weeks in the cam walker non weight bearing. my fear is that thi immobilization will make everything worse.
