Really suffering, best eye ointment ever been taken off market

Has anyone with raging permanent or semi permanent blepharitis encountered a problem getting hold of lacrilube eye ointment recently?  Its showing as unavailable virtually everywhere!!  I don't know how the marketeers can be so ruthless and cruel, I have raging sore, swollen, reddened, weepy, gunky, streaming, irritated eyes and can do nothing about it as th e ointimet that solves the problem in a flash, lacrilube, I'm out of and unable to order more, anyone else fed up and trying not to drip?!

    HI Fiona

I have had the same problem, I've been using Lacrilube  for many years. I too now have Xailin Nite prescribed but I am finding that for now anyway, I am having to re-apply in the middle of the night. I hope that there might be a chance that Lacrilube will be back available at sometime in the future, when the manufacturers had a production a year or so ago there was nothing available.

Hi Neil, i now have Simple Eye ointment and actually find it tons better than lacrilube and wouldn't go back.

Thank you very much, that will be great and to know that it is better than Lacrilube is a big bonus!

Good afternoon Fiona  you very kindly suggested Simple Eye Ointment inplace of Lacrilube, May I ask where you get it from as my NHS doctor won’t supply it as it’s not on their list as it’s too expensive!

      Many thanks in anticipation!

Neil,I'm sorry to hear your GP wont prescribe it for you. Mine has been on prescription for many years now,but I know all GPs are restricted by their own Clinical Commissioning group.   It used to be about £4.50 OTC but it has shot up to an incredible price and the cheapest I can find is online  at Expresschemist, but even this is £16.50 per 4g tube.  Maybe get a tube and try a little at night just before you close your eyes for sleep. You may find it is worth the money. Try about quarter inch per eye. I am fairly generous with it and 2 tubes last me about a month.

Hi, I would complain about that if I were you as it should be one rule the same for everyone, its privatisation, complete nightmare and once services give in to privatisation they end up in the s**t almost without exception in my experience.  Hhowever to answer your question, Boots the chemist may stock it, as my local Boots does, but not sure which country you are from as Boots are a British chemist I believe so may not be available in USA.  Good luck anyway, and sorry about the frightful cutbacks under this govt, apologies on their behalf as they never will!

The last time I tried to buy it at Boots it was about £25.00. I thought I had misheard, but no, an incredible £25.00. I think Neil is in UK.

Thank you for that, that's just what i will do. When I spoke to the GP (not the one I wanted to), she has prescribed a different product but a gel; anyway. Watch this space and thank you

      Hi Fiona

As you might see from my response to Marina Dee, it was unfortunate that the doctor who I wanted to speak to, the message was intercepted!

So I will buy online and try Simple Eye Ointment and if it works for me then I will speak to the senior partner of the Practice. Watch this space, I will be back in touch sometime soon! It's so unfair that there is a rule for one and not for all.

      All the best, Neil

I think Simple eye is the best eye ointment I have ever used. Only seems to be available in UK. Much better than Xailin Nite and Lacrilube.. If you are in UK Neil,do ask your doc to prescribe it instead of Xailin

I know...horrible without it. Have been using Lacrilube since 1995. I have succumbed to using small amount of vaseline . It does give relief but can only use before bedtime. Covering the eyes with cottonballs and mask must fit tight to socket of eyes and a continual use of lubricating drops only.

Dale....have you tried asking your GP to prescribe Simple Eye ointment. I think its better than Lacrilube and its my absolute "must" where dry eyes are concerned. I have had it on prescription for about 10 years now. Its very similar to Lacrilube...ie like Vaseline, but I think better.  You can buy it online but its expensive. If you are interested try Express chemist.
