Rectocele symptoms

I'm interested in hearing what sort of symptoms others have regarding a rectocele.
I am experiencing really bad pressure in my rectum and it is so uncomfortable to sit. I have also a cystocele and was recently fitted with a pessary but it hasn’t helped the discomfort for the rectocele.

I had the hysterectomy with anterior (sling) and posterior (rectocele) repair work 7 weeks ago today. Things work much better, and less pain each week.

I was the same and had a Rectocele, enterocele and Urethra mesh sling op 8 weeks ago, it was painful and uncomfortable for a few weeks and then gradually started to get better. Now I feel so much better, the incontinence has stopped, I can open my bowels normally again and now . Now and again have slight discomfort but all in all I am feeling back to normal again thank goodness. I still rest when I feel tired, don't stand for long and don't lift anything heavy, just followed the advice on here, and I will be 80 in a few weeks.

Hi Taff. I have a significant rectocele and minor anterior prolapse. I dont feel pressure in rectum on sitting as you do - it's worse when I'm standing and feels like somethings falling out! As in someone elses reply, i cant clear out my bowel properly without 'splinting' . I'm a vegetarian but find the more fruit and veg I eat the worse my symptoms are. More wind, often feeling as though I need to have a bm to the point where I won't go the gym because things feel so unsettled in the rectum area! Was diagnosed with IBS but Ive found if I eat fruit/veg/high fibre foods only in the evening then all of the symptoms above aren't as bad. When I go to gym after a day at work I'm starting to feel as though the rectocele is coming out of my vagina! 6 months of regular pelvic floor exercises did nothing to help and I've got a cancellation for surgical repair on 28 December! Ooer! There isn't really a choice but imaybe a bit trepidatious!! What treatment has been suggested to you? Hope you get it sorted. Lizzie 😊 x

Just received letter from hospital saying both prolapses are grade 2.

Hi. My consultant mentioned that a pessary may not help a rectocele much and I can kind of imagine that it wouldn't really hold up the posterior wall? I would suggest seeing a pelvic floor physio because it may help the discomfort symptoms even slightly. You could ask your GP for a direct referal rather than through consultant or there are private pelvic floor physios too. For me it made me more comfortable. I had pressure and pain when sitting a few months ago which I now only get if I walk or stand too much. Im still contemplating an op because I feel like im very limited with activity and mid 30s but at least the physio helped a bit. Have you been told to do pelvic floor excercises?

Hi Taff. They tried me with a ring pessary and it pretty much fell out straight away lol. I don't know what grade my rectocele is but the 6 months of pfe's are certainly worth - I think mine must have been too bad to help. I'm not keen on surgery but have no choice at this stage. You're doing all the right things - hopefully the specialist nurse (is she a womens health physio?) will be able to give you some answers and advice. Ask about the pain particularly - you'll be giving yourself a bad back next of you're having to sit awkwardly! It's not easy being a woman sometimes! I'd never heard of these sorts of problems til it happened to me 😢. I've managed to get a couple of books to read up on it - Australian & American - apparently no-one in the UK cares enough to write a book for us lol. Good luck x

I couldn’t pass a bowel movement without rocking on the toilet and splinting my perineum. Peeing took longer. I could feel both rectocele and cystocele in my vagina. I was uncomfortable walking and sitting and also it was impossible to have any kind of intimacy with my husband.
I decided to opt for surgery after my consultant diagnosed grade II of both.
I hope this helps

Did you have troubles with BMs before the pessary fitted? I think that good posture helps slightly with prolapse so it can't be good that you arent able to sit straight. Sorry that the pessary hasn't helped. Let us know how you get on tomorrow. Tell them how much you are suffering. These "women problems" are just taken so lightly xx

I took lactulose 15mls twice daily for the first two weeks then daily for about ten days and now I do not need it.
I’m sure the hospital will assist you to resolve this with a suppository or a mini enema. I hope tomorrow you will feel much more comfortable .
