Rectocele symptoms

I'm interested in hearing what sort of symptoms others have regarding a rectocele.
I am experiencing really bad pressure in my rectum and it is so uncomfortable to sit. I have also a cystocele and was recently fitted with a pessary but it hasn’t helped the discomfort for the rectocele.

Hi Taff, how did you get on at hospital? I'm starting to think I might try pessary for rectocele so wondered how it's going.

my Gp suggested they may put a gel horn in but it’s a larger ring which so far has stayed in place and is comfortable but only half a problem solved.

Does it pop out of rectum or vagina? If rectum it could be a rectal prolapse, if vagina it will be a rectocele or posterior wall prolapse. Either way I think you will need surgery for it to improve. None of the treatments I tried helped at all. Finally had posterior repair and Sacrospinous fixation for vaginal
vault prolapse. Much improvement in bowel symptoms now but have developed a cystocele again and slight incontinence. Had one repaired many years ago along with a hysterectomy. (1984). 74 now and I think all my internal muscles have gone 'kaput'! I wish I'd been advised to change my lifestyle back then and I might not be having these problems now. Heavy work and gardening, decorating, plus heavy jobs at work place since first op have taken their toll in old age. Try and look for advice on this website re, post op advice. Click on Genitourinary prolapse at top of this page and follow links including the one from Emis Moderator which should lead you to several including one from South Tees which is very useful. Best wishes, Poll X

I mentioned the discomfort to the gynae specialist months ago, a pessary was put in and no mention of curing or helping the rectocele,
For six months I have been in discomfort I can’t sit proper and am sitting on one cheek which is making me hurt in other places now.
i have had an urgent referal to a colorectal specialist so hopefully I will get to see someone soon.
Very worrying as don’t really know the cause, it’s just guess work.

Hopefully the colorectal specialist will be able to tell you more than I can. If the bulge is from the back passage he's the correct person to see. If it's from the middle or vaginal entrance. posterior or anterior prolapse, you need a urogynaecologist but the surgeon you are seeing will tell this I'm sure. If in UK your urgent referral should be within two weeks of seeing the GP who referred you. I know what you mean about sitting on one side as I still do this in spite of having the repair done. Still having discomfort but I also have osteo arthritis in spine and hips so this makes things bad at times. Hope your appt comes soon. Best wishes, Pollyanna UK

I feel the same Taff! Not good getting older is? In my head I can still do 'normal' stuff but my body tells me a different story when I try! lol

One minute I think it’s the prolapses, the other hemroids, but whatever the problem it just won’t go away.

I hope the pessary helps with the prolapse Taff. It won't help the hemarroids. Are you getting follow up appointments to keep an eye on things? you should be as prolapse get worse with time and whatever you do job wise or work wise. No heavy lifting, squatting, standing for long periods or anything else which puts pressure on the pelvic floor. Take care. Poll. x
