Recumbent bike

Hello fellow hipsters! Happy Spring Break! At least here in Texas it is!! 🤠 Back in February when I saw my dr at the 6 mons mark after hip revision he said it was ok to ride a recumbent bike. So when I went to therapy I told my therapist. So they had one and I tried it. Needless to say I could NOT petal the full circle so she just told me to go one way then the other. Didn't do it again till today. I was in therapy, one more day this week and they are cutting me loose after 6 months, I told a different therapist and I asked if that was breaking hip precautions she said yes and I told her how my dr said it was ok to do and I tried awhile back but couldn't. So she asked if I wanted to try again since dr said it was ok. So I did....I was so scared 😳. I couldn't peddle forward so she said to peddle backwards. I got to a point and still seemed like I couldn't do it so she helped ever so slowly and asked what was preventing me from doing it. I said it felt hard but mostly fear!! But I did it!! So for 5 mins I pedaled backwards on my own occasionally trying to go forward but can't. It was kind of cool to do but I was scared!! So was wondering has anyone had trouble getting on a recumbent bike? I'm hoping one day to be able to do this!! 🤗🤓🤠

Sorry, I'm a bit confused. How would this be breaking hip precautions? My physio had me doing this at two weeks, and neither she not the surgeon saw this as anything but a good thing.

Peddling forwards is harder though. You might find it easier to start off more upright. The gravity will help you to peddle, and build the muscles you need. A recumbent bike is actually harder than a normal upright cycle.

Hi Beth! Well I'd been on hip precautions since my revision. For at least 2 months nothing past 80 degrees. Then onc I started weight bearing nothing past 90 degrees which has been hard for me to do. So looking at the recumbent bike and seeing people on it, i saw that the 90 degrees was broken every time you peddle through so I asked the therapist and she said yes I would break hip precautions but dr told me I could do it. So I have a call to him asking again. I thought upright would be better and maybe not go past 90 but not sure. Dr specifically said recumbent bike 🚴🏼. 🤔 LD

Had my THR back in November, and in about 5 days I was back in the hospital because I was bleeding through my bandages. After spending 6 more days in the hospital's wound care unit and going through another surgery to clean out the wound and get a wound pump put on it, I was released just in time to have turkey day at home. Apparently I had a reaction to the staples! If you can't wear cheap earrings, you may have a reaction to the staples because of the metal they're made from. Anyway, that is not what you asked about. ? I too am going through therapy and when I first started on the recumbent bike, back and forth was all I was able to do at first as well. After several minutes, and not until my second or third appointment, was I finally able to go all the way around, but just like you by going backwards! Now after Several weeks of PT, I start off with 4 or 5 minutes of slow backwards pedaling, then 4 or 5 minutes of even slower forwards pedaling. While you do want to push yourself to get better and be able to do more, don't push Too hard and end up with a dislocated joint! Listen to your body, and when it says "Whoa!" Put on the brakes! But if it's just saying "That's uncomfortable, but I'm not going to die from this little bit of pain." Then you're probably doing it right. Once we get through this process our pain should be a whole lot less than it was before the THR! 🙄Best of Luck to you!

Morning TBknits!! Thanks for the advice!! Sorry to hear about your staples!! That's terrible!! Glad you're on the road to recovery!! I'm still pretty scared getting on a bike. I don't ever want to go through another hip surgery again!! It's more than what I bargained for!!! But I can't turn back the clock so I must dredge forward. Wishing you all the best and for a speedy recovery too!! Hugs 🤗. LD 🤠

Maybe start with an upright stationary bike. Make sure the seat is high enough so 90degree rule is not broken. Things take longer after a revision. Once yr muscles have built up move to a recumbent bike. Slowly does it I reckon.

Thanks Denise!! I'm gonna try it tomorrow at the gym. Gonna take my hubby with me to see if ok. Have call into dr to ensure ok with bike and what if any is my hip precautions. It sux that I dislocated hip and had to have revision. 😩😢

Sorry to hear this story. I totally get it. Have you asked for water therapy. What is it that causes the fear to ride the bike foreword.. Is the seat adjusted correctly and how long have you been in PT.

I needed  pain meds to help get thru a slow motion version riding the bike.

. Patience It will work out. Recumbent bike is the best way to rebuild muscle in the hip & leg. Only when your ready.

Last Jan 3 had revision in rehab was riding a recumbant bike 8 days after revision surgery and on pain meds to retrain the muscles. Now off pain meds & Walker and still on a cane. Take Tylenol daily to help with home exercises.

The doctor explained the brain needs to be retrained since the origional ball joint connection has been removed. Replaced with a implant a new path transfer to the brain is made thru walking & exercises. Takes time. Everyone is different.

I am off pain meds everything is much harder. But walking as much as possible slowly taking it one day at a time . I can ride a bike but very slowly and don't push it since off pain meds. You will get there soon.

Thank you Hope! I just got confirmation from my dr that I have to maintain hip precautions. 😞 Since I tried bike yesterday my hip didn't like it! I have been suffering with pain late yesterday and today. I was scared i dislocated it but I can walk without pain but my butt muscle, the side of thigh to knee and groin have been bothering me all day!! 😫 I checked my hips to ensure they are same height, checked legs in bed to make sure same length, looked at knees while in bed to ensure they are same height too!! From experience when I dislocated my hip back in late July, I know what to look for!! So not sure wth is going on now!! I hate this!! Makes me wish I never got this surgery!! 😢😥. I'm icing and using heat. Just when i thought things were getting better!! Hate it hate hate it!!! Reason y I can't pedal forward is because that thigh muscle up front is still so tight and and gets knotted. I just want to feel better already!!! 😭😭

Yes Linds the knots in the thigh is normal.had them THR all three THR.  I also had them so bad & my knee was so painful felt twisted. I used heat muscle rubs on both areas and Tylenol help me a lot. Also my doc gave me a RX for a numbing gell, for my shoulders one had torn rotator cuff the other from frozen shoulder and my hands have Dupuytrens nodes in the palm very sore and made nodes bigger. So I was a mess holding on to walker cane was very painful. Then my neck went out and used a soft neck brace.

I struggled thru and yes it is so blanking miserable and now almost three months later doing much better. Only use cane now. Also give the muscle heat rubs a try they really help. 😀

Mabe it can give you some relief too! 👍

Wow Hope! You sure have been through a lot. I know about the shoulder pain too!! I had rotar cuff surgery about 5 years ago, then other shoulder started to hurt. Then after revision both shoulders got so painful I could barely get out of bed. St shoulder dr said shoulders were not meant to bear weight for so long. I'm better now from that but they hurt on occasion still. Get so stiff too. Weather not much help. I'll try that rubs thanks. Do you get those from masseuse? Here they told us I had to get a letter from dr saying ok to get a deep tissue massage or massage using hot stones. I had a fairly good day Thursday. Was really happy. Will see what rest of week brings as hubby and I are out of town for a few days! Celebrating 35 years of marriage!! Best hubby ever!! 😘🤗😍

Hi I'm sure that we do suffer psychologically after any traumatic incidence and hip replacement must be classified as one, especially when its not been an easy ride, pain is one thing that can actually stop us progressing and sadly I cannot find a way past it so that the brain allows you to move on.

I hope your body starts to feel better and God willing your recovery is just around the corner.

Thanks Alex!! I just want to feel better already!! 😭😭😭. I don't think my hip liked the bike as I've been in pain & discomfort all day today!!! Hope things are going well for you!! Hugs 🤗 LD

    Hi Linda,

I'm in South Carolina (US) where I had my FRHR.  My physical therapist had me on the bike by the 2nd week post op.  You have to be careful for the first few weeks not bring your knee up past the 90 degree rule, but other than that it was part of my recovery.  I don't recall having any trouble at all peddling forward.

I'm wondering if you had special precautions?  My surgery was the posterior approach with normal limitations.

Hey Kimberley!! Are you getting bad weather? I'm from Texas. My first rhr surgery was anterior then 3 weeks later I find out I dislocated it! Had to have total hip revision and 6 weeks non weight bearing. It's been a slow and long recovery. Dr had me on strict hip precautions the first six weeks after revision. No weight bearing, no hip flexion past 80 degrees and no hip exercises. It was a horrible time for me. I'm still suffering from it and feel terrible most of the time. Bursitis and tendonitis and now nerve pain!! Muscle weakness and joint stiffness. I don't know if I will ever feel good again!! Wishing you all the best in your recovery. Hugs 🤗LD

      Hi Linda,

We've been lucky this year with temperatures in the mid to high 70's already!  This is very unusual for us.  The grass is already green and all flowers in bloom.  I'm wondering what we'll be up against this summer.  Probably very hot and humidsad

It sounds as though you've been through a lot more than most with your hip.  I found that the best thing for my recovery was PT.  I was discharged around the 3 month mark.  I'm now 8 months post op and although I'm doing well, I still need to keep up with strengthening exercises.  I have a desk job (which isn't good at all for post HR), so I take a brisk 15 minute walk every night which has helped.

What does your specialist say about the bursitis and tendonitis?  Is there anything that can be done to help?

Best of luck on your continued recoverysmile

Hey Kim! To help with all that is just exercises. Strengthening this muscles. Being short for so long left muscles short and weak. So I'm at same length as good leg so those muscles, tendons, tissue and nerves are being really stretched! 😫 So hoping by year mark all will be good!! Until then it's a witch with a B to deal with!! Taking gabapentin to help with the nerve pain. The Rest is just massaging the area really good. Not fun either!! Yea our weather has been unseasonably warm too. Also been drizzling and overcast a lot too. Summer is going to probably be a scorcher. This past April we had a really bad hail storm that caused lots of damage here. I told my husband at least the most important vehicle was saved, mine!! 😂 LD

I had to laugh about your car not being damaged....lol.  I totally get itsmile  We had a bad hail storm a couple of years ago.  Thank goodness we were out of town when it happened.  Our neighbors weren't as lucky.  They ended up with little dents all over their cars!

It sounds as though you are getting there, and that's great news!  It does get frustrating at times when we feel as though we should be further along.  I still have days when I get little pains here and there and I realize that I'd better keep up with the exercises.  As I sit during the day (desk job and commuting back and forth to work), I have to make an extra effort to walk and stay active at nights.

Wishing you well, and keep us posted!
