Recurrent Episcleritis and hope at last!

I am 41, female and have been healthy all of my life until i had a bout of shingles 4 years ago. I do not know if it is related and my GP will not commit to say it is but after Shingles I kept getting episcleritis.I tried Pred Forte which worked well at first but as my bouts of episcleritis increased i was told to stop using it as the pressures in my eyes increased. I then used Acular but it is not nearly as effective. I got steadily more fed up with looking like something out of a horror film 2 weeks out of each month so in despair went to see a nutritionist. She advised me that the episcleritis was a symptom of my immune system being damaged and put me on a course of Vitamin B, Omega 3 fish oil, a general multi vitamin and a pro biotic plus a daily dose of an anti oxidant supplement with vitamins A,C and E. Unless you are pregnant or wanting to be, I think this has made a difference as apaprt from one day of a vague redness (normally it wold last 10) I have not had a recurrence. It seems to be working so I wanted to share this with you. erhaps give it a go. Good luck.

Chronic Episcleritis for years. Through much trial and error, and very much pain, I have found my solution. Turmeric and Fish Oil. Try it. All natural. To maintain my eyes I take 2 Turmeric and 1 fish oil pill a day. But when I feel a flare up coming on I do that same dosage 2-3x a day.

I've started to have episcleritis flareups... It's annoying. And it's in my only good eye. For me personally it's not too bad.. yet. Although I feel it's getting worse. So I'm scrambling to find a cute. I'm buying carrots, fish oil and green tea. These are all things that have been said to help or cure episcleritis. I hope it works and I will let you all know if it does.

Hey guys!  I’ve been battling this for the past ten years. Last year as an after thought my eye doctor gave me a sample of Bausch & Lomb Prolensa. It cleared my eye up within 24 hours. As so well stated above my “horror show” of an eye condition was embarrassing at work and this has cut the time down immensely. After insurance it cost me $40. Well worth it. The pain goes away immediately. This has not cured my condition but has made it tolerable. Will be trying the above suggestions. I too have ulcers and feel it is related to my stomach. Everyone immediately tells me this can not be the case but reading all of the above comments I feel we are on to something. I hope this helps you all!!

    Hi everyone!

I've had recurring episcleritis in both eyes for about 4 years now, so very happy to find this forum.

as mentioned by many others, the steroid drops work, but inflammation often returns shortly after i stop.

i recently had a recurrance in both eyes, it wasn't going away; then i went for a weekend in the mountains and in 2 days it cleared up!! completely in one eye, and near-completely in the other. unfortunately when i got home, the eye that was still a tiny bit red, got worse day by day.

i live in a city with very clean air so i can't imagine what the reason could be! just wanted to share this experience to check if it resonates with others. maybe I'll start a detailed diary for a few months to see if i can find links with my behavior..

    good health to all,

    L.

i hope your journey helps you discover a cause. Don't be discouraged if it doesn't my specialist told me 50% of the time, they cannot find the cause . I've had to live with that since mine has been going on 17 years . you learn to manage it with drops. The downside is the glaucoma that comes from the drops, but we are managing that too. Good luck .

Quick question, do you have stomach issues? I have noticed that every time my ulcers act up my eye gets red The doctor said that has nothing to do with it but it is a constant coincidence which makes me wonder is this stress related. Your eye cleared up on a trip to the mountains which sounds relaxing.......not stressful.

      hi, no.. no stomach issues.

the trip to the mountains wasn't necessary more relaxing than my normal routine.

I'm thinking maybe something allergen- related (?)

hello everyone. super happy to find everyone. I've been dealing with this for the past 6 years, when I was 34. I've had some flare ups last a few months and I've had them last a year. I've been to every specialist known to the eye dr world, but they haven't found any reason its happening. the last time I had it they had exhausted all forms of treatment and finally went for the steroid shot directly into my eye. it only hurt after the numbing gel wore off. but that was literally the only thing that helped. I've recently been dealing with another flare up and am starting through the whole process of treatments.

I recently came off of the keto diet and so its making me wonder if there is some connection between either gluten, dairy, or sugar that is causing this.
