Recurrent Episcleritis and hope at last!

I am 41, female and have been healthy all of my life until i had a bout of shingles 4 years ago. I do not know if it is related and my GP will not commit to say it is but after Shingles I kept getting episcleritis.I tried Pred Forte which worked well at first but as my bouts of episcleritis increased i was told to stop using it as the pressures in my eyes increased. I then used Acular but it is not nearly as effective. I got steadily more fed up with looking like something out of a horror film 2 weeks out of each month so in despair went to see a nutritionist. She advised me that the episcleritis was a symptom of my immune system being damaged and put me on a course of Vitamin B, Omega 3 fish oil, a general multi vitamin and a pro biotic plus a daily dose of an anti oxidant supplement with vitamins A,C and E. Unless you are pregnant or wanting to be, I think this has made a difference as apaprt from one day of a vague redness (normally it wold last 10) I have not had a recurrence. It seems to be working so I wanted to share this with you. erhaps give it a go. Good luck.

    Hello everyone,

Had episcleritis for a full year now. Same as you guys, a few days after steroid drops it always come back.

I can confirm the Turmeric and Fish Oil treatment. I started using them alongside Vitamin E and my eye is almost always clear white. Somedays I might see a slight red but it wears off eventually.

Its kinda annoying having to take them religiously but its a no-brainer for me since it has no side effects.

I found this forum purely by accident because I have been seeking answers to why nobody can help with the episcleritis issues that I'm having and have been having for many, many years. I am a 69 year old female. I've read all of the comments on this site and decided to try the turmeric and fish oil. The pain has been so intense and it's now been over a week, which isn't that long compared to most bouts I go through, but I took the turmeric and the fish oil last night and this morning my eye isn't as painful as it was yesterday. There is still some lingering redness and yellowing, but not as bad, so maybe this treatment will be my salvation! I've been to a rheumatologist who was unable to find anything. She took 11 vials of blood and ran 29 tests, so there is nothing there that points to why I keep having these painful breakouts. I am also in process of having an allergy panel done. When I was growing up as a kid, I watched my dad go through this all the time and he never knew what to do for it back then either. If I get any results that point to anything that may be the cause of this, I will be sure to come back and post again. I just found this article that points to possible causes. I do have herpes simplex virus and constantly had the ugly sores on my mouth when I was a teen. Here is the portion of the article that mentions this: The most common infectious cause overall is the herpes zoster virus (HZV), which is consistent with the greater-than-fourfold increase in HZV incidence over the last 60 years.22,25 Though uncommon, scleritis has been reported with bisphosphonate use—a class of drugs used to treat osteoporosis.
