Reflux getting me down!

Posted , 3 users are following.

I am taking Lansprazole for reflux at the moment 30mg. I take on in the morning but have found that some days I feel great but then the next thing I have the throat

clearing and feel like a have a heavy stone just behind my rib cage! I wake up most mornings feeling like I have mucus running down the back of my throat and have

a drink of water but this doesn't really help. Getting really fed up with it now!!

I can handle the throat clearing but this feeling of wanting to burp up a lump

from behind my rib cage gets me down. And I always seem to feel bloated. Also

I have noticed that once I have a couple glasses of water, I burp quite a bit!

Anyone else have these kind of symptoms

There are loads of us with similar symptoms. It sounds like silent reflux. There are a few forums on here already with loads of helpful information but I can say that I've had the same symptoms as you for almost 2 years and did take PPIs for a while but they didn't make much of a difference.

Since starting on the Dr Koufman "Dropping the Acid" Detox diet which I followed for 2 weeks and then continued to diet on the 5:2 diet, 6 weeks on my globus feeling is more like a small pea than a golf ball now, the throat clearing is less, my post nasal drip in mornings has almost gone. I still have mucus but it feels much thinner than it did and I live in hope that sticking with this diet it will eventually dissapear but in the meantime I am finding my symptoms much more manageable.

I did cut out dairy milk which I find helps and I drink alkaline water regularly to flush out the pepsin. I also chew bicarbonate soda gum to keep the saliva moving and DGL licquorice pills which are said to help thin the mucus. I still burp a bit but not as frequently. My throat still feels quite tight but it's improving.

I've been suffering badly with no progress for 2 years and since starting the diet and finding the posts on these forums on patient.info and getting these ideas I've had more progress in the last 6 weeks than the last 2 years with GPs and specialists.

Hey that's great thank you for letting me know. I think I will try some of the things you have

tried and see if I can self help myself. I think also I get anxious when I feel like this

    which probably doesn't help matters.

anxiety doesn't help but GPs tried to tell me it was the cause and had me on all sorts of anxiety meds but they didn't help either. I don't think mine was caused by anxiety but it certainly makes you more anxious when you have bad symptoms on a regular basis and the Drs aren't helping much. If you haven't already done so check out the forum on this board below lots of pages of people with similar problems and what has helped them.

I was recently diagnosed with hiatus hernia. I thought this must be the cause of the bloating and burping. However I've had that for about 2 years. I find that digestive enzymes gives me relief almost immediately. On my follow up review for the HH the specialist said I needed to take Zantac 150mg twice a day for six weeks to cure some inflammation in my osophagus. I was already eating little and often and removed tight clothing round my waist. I wasn't suffering with anything when I saw the specialist. I stopped the digestive enzymes with hcl and started the Zantac. Within 2 weeks my burping and gas were starting to build and I now was getting acid reflux something I hadn't had prior to taking the Zantac. My bowels also felt unwell. I decided to stop the Zantac and resume taking digestive enzymes with hcl. Burping and bloating stopped immediately. When I was suffering with burping water was the worst trigger. When I'm on the enzymes I can eat and drink anything.

I agree with Lisa, that these forums have helped me hugely - especially posts from JPT.

I would just like to add that I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks, partly as a result of my reflux - but also this was much worse when on PPIs. My doctor has agreed that this is possible.

I have refused an endoscopy because I sing, and am afraid it will affect my voice, but also I don't want the net result to be told to increase my medications.

So, caron, I think that any non invasive, drug free possibilities found on these forums are worth a try firstly.

    Good luck.
