It always comes back! My husband or my two children have never had it and we dont have any pets....I keep a very clean house and im so careful with my hygiene...What can i do to get rid of these? can anyone tell me if what I'm dealing with is positively threadworms.. a lot of the time when there is itching i find small white flakes around the bottoms of my kids and i will have them along with the itching but I also have vaginal itching as well.. drs are no help they make me feel crazy and everyone around me doesn't seem to care about this what so ever.. I have 4 children ranging in age from 7-4months this is a nightmare i havent been able to wake up from in going on 2 1/2 years.. ive given reeses, albenza, DE, ive taken apple cider vinegar.. showered twice daily, washed, cleaned endlessly all to no avail. I've never seen a live worm only the small flakes that itch like crazy i also see them in the nose and even in my 4 month olds nose. HELP 😦

have you thought about getting a sample of the white flakes to be examined? Maybe you can buy the glass slides online that they use with microscopes. The things that i have almost every day are called hatchlings and they cause itchiness. It's good to remember that either with the NHS or private health you need to fight to get answers and you deserve this. Good luck.

oh and to add I've even babysat my sister in laws 1 year old twins, it was in the evening and one of them was fussy I changed his diaper and sure enough i seen the exact little white stuff by his bum and once his diaper was changed he had a much calmer demeanor.. we then brought it up to her and her response was well if my kids have that its from you guys LOL. I'm pretty sure everyone in my life is in denial and now thinks im nuts! I'm from the US all the Drs. here say different things.. but basically all besides one have made me feel like an idiot. The one that believed me, a ped, said if theres anything by their butts like that, then its most likely pinworms. Other drs have said "you only get that fecal to oral" like really dude!!! Another dr said "have you traveled abroad??" "if not you don't have that" hmmm and lastly if this was pinworms they'd be itching constantly and the worms would be moving. Oh and cant forget the nurses who when id call to talk to a Dr. regarding symptoms would say things like "i don't think your playing in the dirt, are you?" and "my advice is to stay off Google and go on Google scholar, which is what i look up info on" don't mind me, just over here venting because I'm so over everyones carelessness.

Hi Ashley,
I'm sorry you are going through this. I've been in your exact position. I have three young kids, five and under. I believe it is my kids who keep spreading them. They put their hands in their diapers to scratch and then spread them around before I realize it. I believe that we have had them for years as well. I have seen five doctors and they all treated me like I was crazy. They told me it was impossible for them to get in my nose and ears...which is bull...because there is a certain type of threadworm that actually can burrow into your skin. I finally got tired of listening to them and bought some 400MG Albendazole online internationally. If you were prescribed Albendazole, you can use an old prescription or picture of the bottle to get a prescription from ProgressiveRx. Everything we have read is that 200MG is not enough, doctors need to prescribe at 400MG. You may need to take it more than once and then follow it up a couple of weeks later. The whole family has to take it at the same time. You also have to kill all of the eggs around the house because Albendazole doesn't kill the eggs. We bought the Eradicator...it only lists that it kills bed bugs and some others, but it works on pinworms eggs. You have to spray it on the walls the furniture, mop your floors with it, spray it on the blinds and curtains, the inside of your car, kids toys and carseats, etc. You may have to do this several times, but the Eradictor does kill them. We've been able to see the eggs at night when the light hits them just right...they almost look like a super small pieces of glitter. The Eradicator also has something that you can use in the laundry. We also read that they don't like sulfur. So we use a sulfur based shampoo and was our entire bodies with it twice a day. We wash all of our clothes after one use, we wash our bed linens two or three times a week (i bought a bunch of extra sheets and blankets so we can be washing something and still make a bed). You're not crazy...the doctors are butt heads.

I came across this page on the internet as i have been suffering from this for about two months, constant itching day and night. I have tried a lot of mebendazole and albendazole and bought pyrantel off ebay (i know not a good idea). I cant cope anymore, i cant look after my children and its destroying my life.
I know this post is a few years old and wonder what your situation is now. Can someone please let me know whether they have found something to help cure this??
please please please reply!

Hi s
So sorry to hear about your suffering. I wouldn't take anymore drugs - they will damage your liver and imo make you more susceptible to new infections as they mess with your gut flora.
Can I just ask if you have seen any evidence of them, as thrush may be the cause of the itching - thrush is much more 'itchy' than worms, worms tend to be more of a wriggling feeling rather than itchy and tends to be a night time. I would try some thrush cream anyway it isn't very expensive.
Anyway I had them for about 2 years, I concluded that I was getting them from my village hall where I run an art group. The hall is also used for a toddler nursery and by the local school and lots of other groups - so very likely to have fresh worm eggs on a regular basis. But why did I keep picking them up??? Since first getting them I have been extremely careful about hand washing and not touching my face etc but they just kept coming. So I reckon I was just more susceptible and was probably due to the drugs (I took a lot at one point) and therefore poor gut flora (this will also make you more susceptible to thrush btw). So I think you need to help your flora by having live yogurt as much as you can and as much prebiotic foods as poss, google them but some are garlic, bananas, apples, oats, flaxseeds so not too weird.
The other thing which I always tell people is have pineapple everyday, best to have fresh - I have about an inch sized round slice everyday for breakfast and eat the middle bit if you can or chew it for a while then spit it out as this has the most bromelain which is the key part of pineapple that will affect the worms. I read somewhere that bromelain will weaken their skin structures. I have it in a smoothy (so the middle bit goes in too) with some banana and flaxseed. Also I have read that papaya does the same thing but that's quite pricey so I haven't tried that for long periods so couldn't say. Also pineapple is something you can give your kids, maybe as juice if they don't like it normally. I must just say though that some people think eating a lot of pineapple can induce labour when pregnant so I would avoid it or ask your midwife first if there is any chance you may be pregnant.
I have been almost worm free for about a year and I put it down to the diet.
You have children, they are tiring and this will affect your immune system which is affected by how your guts are working so make sure you are getting enough rest and you could also look into any vitamin and mineral deficiencies as this could make you more susceptible - you can take vitamin D with out any side effects as D is very important to your immune system and if you live in the northern hemisphere you are probably lacking it right now. But you may want to get your iron and B vits tested.
Don't worry about all the crap about washing everything everyday, just normal good hygiene is sufficient. But if you can emphasise the importance of hand washing to your family this can only help - you don't have to say you have worms just tell them it's for general stuff like colds and flu - well that's true anyway.
I really know how much you are suffering right now - it really is a night mare that you can't share with your friends and family and so it's very lonely too. But you have found us now so please take some comfort that you are not alone with this - hooray for the internet!
Take care

Thank you so much for your response and reassurance.
Sadly I have seen them and when I say itching its basically moving around throughout the entire day 24/7 and gets worse at night. I may get a total of 20 minutes in a day when it isn't. I feel disgusting and so lost as to what to do. My little one had them two months ago and I must have been lucky enough to catch them and they just won't go away.
I know the drugs are damaging but I am desperate as it feels so intense and so much and don't really know how to at least keep numbers down and ultimately destroy them for good.
I have tried the drugs and eating garlic and applying vaseline at night and have a shower every night and morning and keep the house clean. I have taken all sugar out of my diet to see if this will kill them but they're still there. I read online that your immune system doesn't affect them either way so I was tempted to starve myself for about a week and see if this does anything.
I'm worried about taking pineapple as it is sweet and I thought that they would feed on this and multiply?
I just can't cope with how bad it is anymore.

So sorry to hear this, yes you've been badly infested.
Yes cutting sugar and also refined carbs will really help. But I think it's worth the risk with the pineapple if that's the only sugar you are having. I never cut out fruit altogether but I did cut out all refined sugar.
A lot of people on here have tried many things. One I remember was to put a clove of garlic up your bum at night - I never got round to trying it but it makes sense. But on the other hand it has been debated that stopping them coming out could make them worse by forcing them to lay eggs inside. It's all just speculation of course.
When I was really bad I would put tea tree oil all around my bumhole and that gave some temporary relief, it kind of stings but it does kill them off. I also used vapour rub at night - it does the same thing.
Did the drugs work at all? I took mebendazole and they would subside after a day or 2 and be gone for about 10 days. I was told by my doctor (who was infact useless) to take it again after 2 weeks but they always came back before the 2 weeks were up. So if that is how you are taking them then I would suggest taking it every 10 days or less.
I know how you are feeling - it really does take over your life and drives you mad . All I can say is that you are doing all you can and it will improve but may take some time.

Hi I tried to put a link up but they obviously don't like that sort of thing here.
Anyway if you google 'Everyday foods that kill parasites' and it's by Real food rebels written by Brenda Consentino. There is a good list of foods there.

hi guys, ive been reading this thread! since i was 18 i had threadworms and im now 35! i finally had enough.
i went to the pharmacy and spoke to a pharmacist who was south african, and i asked him what a doctor would suggest if ovex did not work, and he said, "the doctor would advise on a more frequent dosage! rather than one a day, it would be 2 a day" (regarding the ovex liquid medication). He then began to tell me that the UK doesnt know how to deal with parasites as they dont have many of them, whereas back in his home country they have lots of different parasites!
so here is what i did. i took it upon myself to double my dosage, and decided to take the correct amount in the morning, and then the same amount at night before bed and did that everyday until it ran out. i have now been 3 months clean of threadworms!!!
i did not change my bedsheets until i had completed the medication, perhaps a week after the last dosage. i did not hoover like a mad woman, just cleaned my house as normal, cleaned all light switches, door handles, toilet seat.
each morning when i was taking the medication i would have a bath and clean around my bottom! that is all i did!!
usually everytime i had a period they would all die off or slow down, probably because i dont each much during my monthly, and then it would flare up once my monthly would pass probably due to wanting to eat more foods again. it was a complete nightmare and ruined my life! i would advise every adult to do this!!
3 months worm free!!!!
