HI, I've had treadworms for almost 5 years now! Ive been eating loads of Opex and Mebendazole. I tried the pumpkin seeds and eaten garlic every day for months...I've also gone up to the Hospital for Tropical Diseases In London to see a specialist for the last 8 months....All their treatment has not worked either. It always comes back! My husband or my two children have never had it and we dont have any pets....I keep a very clean house and im so careful with my hygiene...What can i do to get rid of these? Help Please.....Its driving me insane!

Thank you Anna for your reply.

Did the specialist only offer Albendazole or other drugs?

Ah ok, I use Vaseline all the time, keep thinking I can block them in and they will die but I'd love to ask a specialist if they really to need oxygen for the eggs to develop or not as I sometimes feel they might be hatching inside???

I'm hoping one day to be offered a chance to see a specialist just to see if I have any luck.

I'm also the only one in my house to have this problem. I've told my partner my fears about being close to him but he is very reassuring about it.

I don't feel I have a huge worm burden as I only see one per time but I get constant mucus and itching . I never see them in my stool, only ever when one decides to wriggle its way out and the timings can be very random.

I also have very sluggish bowels, i wonder if this helps them survive too!

I have tried Albendazole to. Didnt work or make any different from the Mebendazole. The Worms Comes out to lay the eggs mostly at night. They do not lay eggs inside your Body. You can go to the doctor and say you want to be refered to the tropical in London. They must do that for you. Im sorry to say but they could not help me though....

Hi just letting you know I'm feeling a lot more positive now and a lot of that is due to speaking to yourselves! I will be sending a worm in to the doctors to prove I'm not imagining things as they put it! So angry with them! I'm also determined to stay positive and get on with my life. I'm gonna take the ovex when needed and just carry on. My partner knows about me suffering with these things (I broke down and told him when I was pregnant). He's not fazed thank God! He has also got me some tablets which are supposed to protect your liver (think they are called Liv 51) not sure if I need to be taking them really but I get a bit paranoid about taking so much ovex lol. That's great Vicky,

It's a good plan, you are doing all you can and it sounds like you have support which is great.

I'm in a similar mindset to you at the moment. I'm finding this thread so helpful, I don't feel so alone. It's a great help.

Fingers firmly crossed you can get your GP to sit up and pay attention x

I am the same as you! I am the same with my bowels and feel this doesn't help. Part of me also thinks the worms may have caused my ibs when I had them for years untreated when I was younger.

Have you ever tried diatomaceous earth? I am very tempted to try it as heard it can work.

Hi Laura - interesting about the sluggish bowel.  I too have issues with TMI alert: soiling and bowel movements are difficult during my period and ovulation.  I think I have very squashed up innards!  But I have often wondered if the 2 things are linked.  I was sue to have a camera up the bottom but the letter came very late and by the time I was about to confirm I got a letter saying I had missed the boat.  I'm going to go back and request another referral.

A while ago I had a Ca125 test because of bloating/diarrhea/constipation/eating/nausea issues and it was raised (not ovarian cancer) but it showed clearly that there is something inflammatory going on in there.

I suspect it has a lot to do with scarring from c section and I am becoming less concerned with it all.  Find running keeps everything ticking over and seems to improve the bowel problems a bit and certainly makes periods lighter.  I'm 47 and things are already starting to change and sometimes I have mega flooding but honestly exercise seems to just make everything better.

      Hi Brychni

      That's interesting re: the running!

Do u find it helps with the worm situation or just the bowels?

I had a C-section and often wonder if that has changed my body in some way or even just the things the body goes through during pregnancy, could it change the shape of the bowel, create a safe place for them to thrive?

I'd love to find a way to make medical professionals listen and realise that we are all normal sane people who are struggling with something we find just as unlikely and confusing as they do. So frustrating.

When you say you are less concerned with it, do you mean the worms? If so how do you cope, I'm doing ok most of the time but I have my moments!!

Hi Laura.  I'm of the belief that something happened to my anatomy after pregnancy which has allowed this to happen (I've had them for nearly 8 years now).  I think that something alters with the bowel shape which allows them to hide and reproduce inside of me.  I wish I knew how to find someone who could investigate this for us but have had no luck.  My issue is with the tiny ones that are coming out constantly at the moment.  I always thought they were better than the adults but they are driving me crazy.  Ho hum.  It's so depressing sometimes.  x

Hi Laura - the whole thing is so frustrating isn't it?  I do wonder why people are being referred to Tropical Diseases!  Seems a bit extreme.  There has been a 'poo study' released today.  Interesting results, I heard about it on the news today.  Wonder if they have anything to say about worms!

OK I started to get migraines when I was about 29 - among the first I though I was dying and called an ambulance!  It was triggered by a drink the night before and not a very much, one or two bottles of beer and a small wine.  Prior to that I had had something similar after wisdom tooth extraction under anaesthetic.  The migraines really took hold after my 13 yr old was born and I tried everything.  Suffered with them for years about 4 per month sometimes more and totally debilitating.  About 12 years on I had the migraine to end all migraines - won't go into details - but I had had enough and I tried a diet based on ketogenic eating which is proven to help with epilepsy and ultimately with migraines which respond to the same drugs.  ( I also had what they used to call 'petit mal' when I was a child) so maybe there is a link for me.

Fast forward a few years and the migraines are fully under control except when I have a drink (!) so I'm doing that less and less but after getting all these bowel symptoms I thought I would have it checked out, slightly concerned that my high fat diet might be causing problems.  I was told in no uncertain terms that fat being bad is old fashioned notion and that cholesterol is not caused by eating fat etc etc.  However, they did a cholesterol test anyway and it was fine as predicted but because of my bloating they did a Ca125 test too which is indicated in ovarian cancer but also indicates inflammation generally.  It was high but went down on subsequent tests and it was put down to time of the month and every other test: scans etc were clear apart from fibroids.

Putting it all together I believe that I have adhesions from the c section which would explain why sometimes having a poo when I'm ovulating or having a period & I'm talking EXTREME pain to the point where I have been unable to get off the sofa the pain then goes away after I've been to the loo.  I think everything in there is sticking together and causing obstructions in the bladder, uterus and lower bowel and I have noticed that during those times when I exercise less the symptoms get worse.  It feels like keeping strong improves the muscle tone internally and just helps to keep things moving and less sluggish and even my periods seem slightly lighter when I make the effort - literally from one day to the next.  For example if I go for a really good runs on the days before my period is due it is undoubtedly lighter and I tend no to have any issues with bowel movements.

Having said all that, because I have a retroverted and retroflexed uterus and my bladder seems to press on my vagina too I think you're right all that folding (I can't use menstrual cups - tried so many times but my insides seem to go up and round the corner!!) especially onto the bowel /must create pockets for worms to flourish which is why they come and go.  Probably in a person without all these issues, if they get worms they pass and the person wouldn't notice but if they are sort of getting stuck in nooks and crannies perhaps they breed in higher numbers?

So I suppose, that all these things are not very nice but non of it is life threatening and I really do feel that if I don't give in to them and keep moving I must be doing some good - if you know what I mean!

I'm starting to think this could we be the issue yes as I had them once years before my pregnancy and got rid of them in a week.

As far as I can see that's all that's changed since that time, pregnancy!

Do you think the small ones are hatchlings on the outside or are they coming out of the bowel for some reason? I've had them for four years now. When I'm symptom free ( this could be duration between two weeks to two months or longer) I start to feel positive and feel calm but as soon as the symptoms and/or I get a little ' visit' I get very depressed.

I know it is very upsetting at times. It's good at least we have this forum so it doesn't feel so lonely X

Wow Brychni you've had lots to deal with.

I think you are right, it must be something related to that!

I think people get referred so they can be prescribed the stronger drug.

      I'd give anything a go.

I remember someone saying to keep drinking plenty of water as it expands the bowel out, I never drink enough!

Just waiting for a link to an article to be 'moderated'.  It's by Brandon Keim "The Potential Health Benefits of Parasitic Gut Worms".  It made me feel much better about the whole thing - now when I get them I am just irritated not worried.

Hi Laura.  I think they thousands hatch inside me and then come down.  I too go for the occasional long period without them (usually in the summer) but then they come back just around the time I start to feel hopeful.  Thanks Brychni for the article - very helpful.
