hi, I am just over 9 weeks  post op and still on 2 crutches and finding the straighting very difficult. Still in a lot of pain which I'm sure is quite normal, but today I have gained a new violent sharp pain in my knee reducing me to tears my painkillers aren't touching the pain and walking is so painful no matter what I do I can't stop this nasty pain. Has this happened to anyone else ????

    Is your knee swollen.

You may have a meniscal tear and you should really go to A and E to be assesed asap to avoid any damage to the knee. Sorry to have to say this but youmay need an x ray to exclude a fracture.

This happened to me and my GP sent me to A and E directly from the surgery as he thought that I may have had a fracture. The x ray was negative but an MRI of the knee showed a meniscal tear.

Obviously not. However I did not know that. Also Diane may have been talking about the knee that had not been operated on.

Possibly. . lots of bits start to hurt which have nothing to do with the op! (unfortunately). I assumed it was the revision TKR she was referring to, and nine weeks seems a long time to still have acute pain, as opposed to the horrible aching which seems to go on for months. . . .

By nine weeks I must say I was over the violent pain stage. . still lots of aches bt not real pain as at the beginning..if ice, rest and painkillers don't touch it, I should get it looked at. . .

      To everyone

I have got a meniscal tear whichis very ,very painful..

This evening my ankle is swollen.

      Does anyone know why?

I cannot stand thhe pain anymore. Codeine is useless and so is paracetamol. I cannot have any steroids or NSAIDS as I am taking warfarin.

I would be grateful if anyone has any tips on how to cope with all this. I also have peripheral neuropathy from antibiotcs but can the torn meniscus also cause tingling, numbness etc, etc. Jean

Ice and elevation are about your only solution unless you can get your dr or emergency room to kick loose with some oxycodone or morphine.

I would seek medical advice as soon as possible to exclude a fracture and/or any possible infection.

Sounds like possibly some unusual scar tissue. Start out by giving it rest elevation and a real through icing. When you start using it again start very slowly stand straight, use your cane, step out with as long of stride as comfortable touching heel, ball, toe giving the leg as full bend as possible with each step. Its hard not to hurry when you are as far along as you are but often time its the quick step with little bend that caused the leg to start binding. One other important thing, hydrate. Lots of water. Dehydration is an enemy of of soft tissue properly stretching. I also use vit E oil 2 or 3 x's daily massaged into the leg. This absorbs into the tissue and lubricates to allow everything to stretch properly. There are several oils that work, vit E is jut my personal preference. Keep us advised how you are doing. Others may have other suggestions.

I think the same as old fat guy...possibly uncomfortable scar tissue.  That's the problem that I have, with chronic pain and unable to straighten.  Seek advice from your consultant.

      Hi

What can be done about the scar tissue problem, would it involve surgery or physio or both?

A good vitE oil or some prefer cocoa oil. You didn't mention how far post surgery you are but don't worry about it until all drainage has stopped and the scab area are completely dried and peeled on their own. Use the oils 2 to 3 times daily and massage deep into the wound.

If its a minor tear often times physical therapy can solve the problem but if its a large tear you really need an orthopedic surgeons opinion. Possibly a spinal might be the answer. I would get a professional opinion as soon as possible as those things can worsen over time

Thank you very much for your speedy response. I am in a lot of pain and at the end of my tether. I also have peripheral neuropathy due to the side effects of antibiotics and other prescribed meds such as statins, phentoin, pantoprazole.

I am also  on warfarin due to blood clots.

I feel very low with all this and find this forum very helpful.

Thank you once again. I presume you are in the US.

      Hi Jean

Very early days for you, so massage and physio at this stage I think.  That should break it down.

I am at the year stage (and have had the problem for many months now).  My consultant said back in June that he believed my problem to be excess scar tissue, but that I needed to be at the year stage before he could treat.  My knee is being reopened, the scar tissue removed, the spacers replaced and the whole thing washed out.
