REZUM--HAVE YOU HAD THIS DONE???????

Posted , 385 users are following.

I had a nice conversation today with the President of the "Urology Times". He was telling me that there is a "New Procedure" that has been approved called the "REZUM SYSTEM".  The company that makes the system is called "NXThera, Inc".  You can google them up and lots of stuff comes up.  I called them for a referral and they gave me a Doctor in Minnepolis that has done it over 50 times now.  I called his nurse and she said he would call me back and answer my questions on monday.  As you guys probably know Doctors are not very good at returning calls but we'll see what happens.  Iam not very good at explaining how the procedure works but basically they take the device and put it up the uretha and vaporize the prostate cells which kills them.  It works with high pressure "steam" that at a certain degree will kill the prostate tissue.  My question for you guys is there anybody out there that has had it done to them and how are you getting along and are there "side effects", etc etc?????

I had the Rezum procedure on January 31, 2019. After 3 1/2 weeks I think it is too early to evaluate. I had general anesthesia and felt nothing. They sent me home with a catheter for two weeks at which time I returned for removal but had to rush back to be re-catheterized. Same thing a week later but this time I went home with a #24 which is quite large but it helped to drain some clots during bladder irrigation. Today they removed the third catheter, instructed me on CIC, and sent me home with a box of self-catheters. I've been peeing normally for eight hours now and hope to continue.

There is much information in this format and everyone has their own unique experience. At this time I am somewhat pleased I had it done. It is less invasive than other procedures. Some say it takes 3 - 6 months before the full benefit can be felt. I am finding the healing process can be a journey with many stops along the way. My condition was AUR and I had to have something done. I had to wear a Foley for 2 months prior to getting the procedure done due to insurance authorization and scheduling issues. Good luck to you and let us know how you're doing.

James it sounds like you're doing pretty well. So you don't need to self catheterize anymore ?

      James,

      .

From my experience and that of other guys on this forum 3 1/2 weeks is too early to tell. I started to open up at 4 weeks and by 6 weeks, there was a noticeable improvement. I will be 3 months in a few days and my Rezum was definitely successful as I am peeing normally now but still have PVR's of 50-100 ml which are OK for guys our age. I measure my PVR's by self-cathing.

      .

I have definitely had a few times when a size 14 catheter was clogged by dead prostate material that was produced by the Rezum procedure and then shed off by the body. Over the last almost 3 months, I have had several episodes lasting for about 2 to 4 days where I was peeing out dead prostate material which were followed that same day by noticeable drops in my PVR values.

      .

I was in AUR too, had a Foley in me for almost a month, and then self-cathed for about 9 months before my Rezum. Good luck to you and remember to be patient.

      .

Steve do you feel it's helpful to self-cath for that last 50-100 ml, or are you partly doing this to just test how your bladder is doing?

I have only been peeing normally for the last 11 hours since they removed the Foley. Too early to know for sure and I am kind of concerned about my first night sleeping tonight without the Foley. It was in for three months so my bladder is currently in retraining. I did a CIC this morning as instructed by the nurse and it was pretty easy. I have a box of FR 14's ready in case I need them. My old fashioned way of peeing is showing about 125 mm as measured on the portable urinal but I am peeing about every 45 minutes. The urge to go requires me to respond without hesitation as my control is non-existent. It is hour to hour for me since three previous attempts to pee without the Foley had me rushing back to the nurse in discomfort to be Foleyized again. This is the longest I've been able to pee by myself but I'm not sure I am emptying my bladder totally. Thanks for asking and best of luck to us all.

I definitely had many clots clogging my bladder two weeks post Rezum. It took four nurses an hour to jam a Fr 24 past my prostrate to irrigate the bladder. They showed me the many large clots as they drained them. After an hour I was draining clear but I had to keep the Fr 24 in for a week for further drainage,

James, sounds like we had nearly the same experience. With my second foley I started having giant blood clots. The worst were about 3 weeks after the procedure. After the last catheter was removed, I had a couple of small 1/4" or so clots when peeing. Then I had a really big one, around 3/4" by 1/2 inch when it burst out. Since then things have gotten better and better. Procedure was on Dec. 11, and it still hurts when I pee. Dr. says its bladder spasms. But I pee much less often and much more. On the idea of self-catheter, I can't do it. It jams and results in bleeding. By the way, I also was in excruciating pain after the first catheter when the nurses in the ER tried over and over to insert a foley. I was in a small hospital and was in fear of being Life-Flighted to a large hospital. Finally, they got a bigger one in. I had a total of 4 emergency trips to the hospital. Now I pee like normal for probably 10 seconds, then a spasm happens and the pee slows down, but keeps coming, until I am down to around 70 m. residual. Things really are much better. I hope they get that way for you.

      Hi David,

      .

I replied earlier to your question, but I could not find that my reply was ever posted.

      .

When I see the urologist (not the one who did the Rezum) on March 11 for my 3 month follow-up, I plan to ask him about if my self-cathing for the last 50-100 ml is helpful. Right now, it is how I measure PVR values to test how my bladder is doing. By self-cathing before I go to sleep, it does help me sleep through the night. The morning self-cath is probably not necessary anymore.

Most of my dead prostate tissue clots have been about 1/4 inch across in size with a few being about 1/2 inch across in size. The have all be very thin or flat (like a pancake). Sometimes there was blood with them. After each 2 to 4 day tissue clot episode by peeing got noticeably better and my PVR values dropped too.

      .

As for Drtom, I have a similar pattern of peeing well for about 10 seconds and then it slows down but continues until my PVR is down to about 70 to 100 ml. This is most likely due to my moderate bladder trabeculation which will take longer to heal. In 2 days, I will be at 3 months and my Rezum has been a success.

Thank you for the kind thoughts. A while ago a friend of mine once said he'd rather have an arm cut off than the prostrate issues he was experiencing at that time. Being younger than him I couldn't relate to his logic until now.

I have now been catheter free for 30 hours and have peed with some degree of success without having to CIC. I am releasing urine on my own at the rate of 125 cc per hour or about 100 cc every 45 minutes. While this is quite frequent it is better than AUR. I am drinking water and Gatorade as per the Nurse's instructions. I feel more control than yesterday and my paranoia to be very close to the bathroom is fading. I actually ventured out to run some errands and was able to delay the urge to pee. Next week I return to the Doc for my 5 week follow up and I hope I am able to avoid CIC before then. So far so good I think, but there is no miracle cure for these conditions and any improvement is much welcome.

Hi Steve, You have given me hope. It's not quite been 3 months for me. I hope that's the magic number. Thanks

      Drtom,

      .

The magic number was about 2 months for me. So what was did you do in the time BEFORE your Rezum (cystoscopy, TRUS, urodynamics, self-cath period, etc.)?

Hi everyone and thank you for the information

I just had the Rezum treatment 6 days ago and next day after the treatment I waked up at 2:00 AM

feeling my testicles burning like fire, no pain killer works with it and went back to the urology department but they didn't let me in.

Two days I lived with lot of pain wished if I didn't use this Rezum treatment .

After two days the testicles colour turned from red to brown and starts to change the testicles skin

Now I still have the cath on for another two days.

Anyone have an idea about the testicles issue? Please let me know

    Thank you

I would go to the Emergency Room. Sounds like this could potentially be serious.

I agree with OB. That certainly doesn't sound normal and should be checked out.

      Hey Buddy

Yes if you can't get a hold of your doctor go to the hospital. Like the other's men are saying this does not sound normal

Take care and I hope all get better for you....Ken

I strongly agree with everyone else's suggestion.Run, don't walk, to the emergency room before you loose those valuable parts of your body. With what you've described I'd be scared out of my mind.Maybe it is some rare side effect of no consequence, but I'd want to know for sure. Best of Blessings to you. Tom

Thank you very much and sorry for the late reply,

The testicles infection is nothing to do with the rezum and recovered in two days , the catheter is removed after 8 days from the treatment and things getting worse, 2-4 times to wake up at night before the treatment and 5-8 times I wake up now, 17 days from the treatment day and 9 days since the catheter removed, I will keep you updated if things changed
