REZUM--HAVE YOU HAD THIS DONE???????

Posted , 385 users are following.

I had a nice conversation today with the President of the "Urology Times". He was telling me that there is a "New Procedure" that has been approved called the "REZUM SYSTEM".  The company that makes the system is called "NXThera, Inc".  You can google them up and lots of stuff comes up.  I called them for a referral and they gave me a Doctor in Minnepolis that has done it over 50 times now.  I called his nurse and she said he would call me back and answer my questions on monday.  As you guys probably know Doctors are not very good at returning calls but we'll see what happens.  Iam not very good at explaining how the procedure works but basically they take the device and put it up the uretha and vaporize the prostate cells which kills them.  It works with high pressure "steam" that at a certain degree will kill the prostate tissue.  My question for you guys is there anybody out there that has had it done to them and how are you getting along and are there "side effects", etc etc?????

For those reading this and considering the procedure, self cathing makes this much easier and less inconvenient. I was back in the gym 5 days after the procedure doing squats thanks to self cathing.

This discussion is quite long. I need to be able to search it for answers to my questions. Does anyone know how to do that?

I am considering Rezum as a follow-up to my Urollift that was done last year. The lift did not help that much for me because of a large median lobe that blocks the passage. I am hoping Rezum will be able to target that area better.

My question is... does a previous Urolift procedure interfere in any way with doing the Rezum process?

As for finding specific information in the discussion, kind of hit or miss. urolift moves the prostate away from the urethra freeing up urination. Rezum is very good at targeting the medium lobe. for me, 2 of the 15 injections for me were to the medium lobe. Since the needle depth of the scope that delivers the rezum treatment is fixed it will still deliver steam to those areas adjacent to the urethra including the areas that are causing you problems. The steam will stay in the area it is injected in and would still ablate the adjacent cells. Urologist has the final call but any area causing restriction to urnine flowing from the bladder can be targeted. Please follow up with this discussion as you obtain more information. Best of luck to you

Chuck, I do know that one of the two Urologists that I consulted indicated that Urolift would not get in the way of other procedures. I would encourage you to find the most experienced Rezum professional in your area and have a consultation with them - the person who would do the procedure is who I would ask that question of. Too many opinions out there. What state do you live in? If you are able to make your way to Northern Utah, there is an outstanding Uro named Robert Wayment who has done over 250 of them and also consults with the company. He did mine and am very pleased. I have learned that having the most up-to-date equipment and lots of experience is extremely important.

    Chuck,

I have the same issue - except that I had a bipolar TURP in April and I am still getting up 6-10x per night. My flow is stronger, and it's easier for me to get back to sleep, but I just keep waking up every hour to hour and a half. Once in a while I can last 2 hours. This is not only an overactive bladder type of issue, but also a chronic insomnia issue. I have been getting up like this for a few years and now it's a very bad habit that I can't seem to break. I have taken various sleep meds including melatonin and different anthistamines, and I think they are helping slightly. This is a tough issue. My bladder is feeling less irritated since the TURP but it's taking a long time to calm down. There are various meds for overactive bladder, and they do help slightly - you just have to check to see what's covered by your insurance. I take trospium. When I stop it, my bladder feels more irritated, so I have to start up with it again.

I really hope this issue can be solved for both of us,

    Tom

      Good morning All

I was going to do a new post but we are all dealing with this problem in a way

I sent my doctor a e-mail and told him what is going on. He seams to think I have a overactive bladder. Which I do not think I have.

I do not have the problem of getting up at night many times or rushing to go to the bathroom. I do sometimes take a little time to start not all the time and my steam is thin sometime. I do void enough. My problem I'm leaking for some reason. During the day I void no problem. I also make sure I shake dry and squeeze so I have no urine hanging around.

By the end of the day I have a ring in my under ware a wet spot and my pants start to smell. Also most morning I wake up with the same thing. One morning it was so bad that I had to change the sheets. Doing a lot of wash. When I go out I ware a pad

He wants to but me on a overactive medication. But I'm all ready on Vesacare 10 mg for a tight sphincter. This only started a few month's ago. Been on the medication for over a year.

I feel it is my stricture. I have one just before the prostate ( Balbar Urethra ). In 2014 it gave me a problem like this before was having a lot of infections.

I see my doctor next month he is going to do a flexible scope in the office to see if it got worse have not had a problem with it for at least 3 years

Doing research on a overactive bladder I did not like what it said. This is what we have to look forward to. It is a normal part of aging. That's bull. I don't have the urge to urinate. I go maybe 2 to 3 times a day. I do not need to lose weight. I did not have this problem years ago when I was 340 pounds. I only weight 185 now. I do not drink anything with caffeine. But I think I may cut down on the water and juice before I go to sleep.

      Life's a _____. Can't say what I really what to say.

All the best and good health to all.......Ken.

Some other reasons you might have an overactive bladder could be

      • irritable bowel syndrome
      • high blood sugar
      • some food that irritates the bladder
      • the need to strengthen some lower abdominal muscles - transversus abdominis

I had this problem but only at night. Leakage. I wouldn't get the signal to pee because I was full all the time.

Are you retaining? Do you constantly have a full bladder?

Did they do an ultrasound in the Uro's office? It's a super easy procedure and gives you the amount you are holding post urinating (Post Void Residue PVR). I was holding 300 and always walking around full. I wasn't getting the signal to pee unless I was very full.

What helped me tremendously was self cathing at night at first. This meant I could empty before going to bed and I could sleep through the night.

But another benefit is the bladder gets to drain completely, helping rehab it. It gets stretched when it's full all the time. Cathing and emptying it helps it feel what it's like to be empty, stop stretching it, and will help restore the muscle.

I think you're probably retaining, always full, and then leaking out when you don't get the signal. Cathing will help "reset" the bladder back to normal. In your situation, if you cath before bed and cath before going to work, I bet your leakage will stop.

Also, stop drinking water at 6-7 p.m. at night.

You don't need a prescription to buy catheters but your doctor can prescribe them.

      Hey David

I have no problem with the bowel and I do watch my sugar. I check my blood and take my pill every day.

I doe watch what I eat. My doctor did give me a diet that I should eat and things to avoid.

Maybe that has something to do with it lower abdominal muscles. My doctor wanted me to go last year for pelvic therapy and never went. Will have to tell him that again. Maybe he will send me.

      Thank you....Ken

I do not know if I am retaining. I do not have the urge to go and I don't get up to go at night. They have done that at the office before but not for a while. Maybe when I go next month I will ask him. I can send him a e-mail before hand and ask

I did have a problem 3 years ago. I went into the hospital for my heart and ended up with retention. I had no feeling to go at all. When they checked they was 800 cc in the bladder. They had to catheter me. It hurt like you know what. They could not get it into the bladder. Tried 7 times. They had to give me morphine for pain. Had a catheter for 10 day. Turned out to be my bladder was inflamed.

I'm have not had any pain and I'm going to the restroom

I started not to drink anything after 7 pm. I do have catheters but why should I use them if I'm still voiding. I know when I was in the hospital and was holding urine I was in a lot of pain. I don't have that. I know the prostate is still open and the bladder muscle is good I think.

Oh well we will have to see......Thank You......Ken

It might require you to self-cath as Motto is suggesting.

But obviously sterile technique is crucial when self-cathing.

It's definitely useful to go over JimJames threads here on self-cathing - he has invaluable details about techniques.

Just because you are peeing doesn't mean you're not full. If you're only peeing when bladder is very full, you've lost the sensation of when to pee and only have to pee when full. This is bad for your bladder as it stretches it out of shape and it loses its musclularity. (Not the right word but you get the idea.)

Also, it's not healthy to have all this old urine sloshing around your bladder mixing with the new urine. The first time I cathed and felt my bladder fully drained it was almost painful it felt so strange and good.

The self catheters you use should be as small as possible while still working. This makes them comfortable. Much more so than a foley.

I'm betting you're full all the time, especially since 3 years ago you were at 800. If you start regularly cathing, you'll drain your bladder and feel much better and hopefully over time restore some bladder function.

      Hay David.

Yes I was reading that I think I will try it tonight. I will pull out a couple and see what happen. May I can reset something.

I have read his out line before. I have been trying to get a hole of him for month's. He was having some problems and has not been on or answered me.

      Thank you...Ken

I do have the catheters that my doctor gave me. There a 14 Fr coude self lubricating There from a company called BARD.

I will try it before I go to bed. We will see. I hope something helps. If this is not it and it is the stricture I will have the balloon dilation. I would never have any other surgery. No way No how.

All the best and Thank You....Ken

Make sure to use sterile disposable gloves, wash your hands first. You might apply that iodine solution to the tip of your organ to insure sterility.

Also, the way you hold the catheter is important.

It might have a sleeve so that you never touch the actual catheter with your hands.

Be very conscientious about what you're doing.

Know each step before you actually do it.

You make sure the part that goes in does not touch anything else before going in. Wash your penis with those sterile cleansing pads. You can get them online. Don't have to be alcohol. Wash your hands but don't touch anything that goes in. You handle the catheter from the opposite end of the tip.

Yes I will be careful. I've had enough infection for this year.

It does have a sleeve so I will hold on to that will not touch the catheter with my hands.

I will also make sure that I clean the tip. I do not have any alcohol can you use hydrogen peroxide that I have

Take care and thank you both......Ken
