Rezum Procedure

Hi All,
I'm Ted from San Jose CA in the US. Had the Rezum procedure completed in my doctor’s office on Thursday, 16 Nov 2017 to alleviate my BPH. Here is the log of what has happened so far. Hopefully this is helpful in what to expect. I will attempt to post my discussion for each day every few days.
Patient info: 65 YO, 192 lbs (87kg), 6' (436cm), diabetic type 1 for 51yrs, A1C 6.5 level, Flomax for BPH since ~2013, Prostate ~50cm. Have had weak urination flow since my 20's. I work full time as a Facilities Mgr.
A few days prior to procedure - started taking probiotics, and more fiber and stool softener. Increased my fluid intake and decreased my intake of solid food.
16 Nov 2017
One hour prior to the procedure at home I was directed to take 1 Hydrocodone-Acetaminophen (10mg-325mg Tablet). Within 30 minutes of taking it, I started feeling its effects.
At the Doctor's office - 1.5 hrs after taking the HA tablet, the doctor gave me a short duration general anesthesia in my arm. Did not know the procedure was done until I was getting dressed. Did not feel anything. The entire procedure (from the anesthesia to when I was getting dressed was about 45 minutes). I left the doctor’s office with a catheter and leg bag. Catheter will stay in until 27 Nov (partly due to Thanksgiving holiday and weekend (23-26 Nov). Thought I'd have it out no later than 22 Nov.
Once home I took my first pill of Levofloxacin (500mg -antibiotic, 1/day). No pain but some discomfort from the catheter moving around when I moved. Had some blood in urine. Drank a lot of fluid, herbal teas and water. Empty ~300 ml from the bay every 2-3 hours. Ate lite meals. Went to bed feeling fine. Got up 3 times to empty bag.

Feel OK and continued same routine. Took one Levofloxacin (500mg) tablet. Took a nap for ~1.5 hrs. Woke up and my vision was totally blurry. My wife contacted the doctor's office and they prescribed a different Cephalexin (500mg, 4 x day). Found out on-line but not through the doctor or pharmacist that the Levofloxacin has a black label ((("increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture. In February 2011, the risk of worsening symptoms for those with myasthenia gravis was added to the Boxed Warning. In August 2013, the agency required updates to the labels to describe the potential for irreversible peripheral neuropathy (serious nerve damage).")) My vision took several hours to return after taking the Levofloxacin. First bowel movement since the procedure. Some bleeding coming from the penis. Once in a while in the urine bag , there was one or two piece of bleed clots. The rest of the day went without a hitch. (no pain).

Feel OK and continued same routine. Food intake is on the lite side. Eggs, soup, chicken, veges, apples (good fiber), peanut butter, pretzels. Staying away from things that have red in them. Continued taking probiotics, fiber and stool softener. Bowel movement some bleeding coming from the penis. Started new antibiotic Cephalexin 4 x day. Walked around a little 15 minutes twice at our apartment. I'm typically pretty active. Took first shower since the 16th. Felt good and relaxing for the 15 minutes in it.

Thanks for airing the experience. I'm not sure what to do. I'm 66. In great physical shape.
Turps are a bloody mess! ( I'm a USA original, lol)
I was offered 2 procedures by a U doc in Florida.
Green light which is short term.
Simple robotic prostectomy is once I'm told.
Rezum, a new item on my block sounds pretty good, based on what I had in my knowledge bank prior.
Being able to drive to and from after the procedure is incredible!
The others mentioned were 30 to 40 days doing Almost nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!
Having the Rezum, does it still require continuance of proscar or other shrinkage meds?

Good evening. First of all I can't believe that they think it was better just to get rid of your prostate. Good for you. Stand up for you body. You do know that Rezum does not work for everyone. But It is worth a tried. It is better then having the prostate cut out or removed and fining out that you did not need it done. How big is your prostate and did they say it was your prostate. If that is the problem. Have you looking into Urolift. It can open you up without cutting. Whatever you pick it up to you. Look at the pros and cons of the procedure before you pick. Good luck and god bless Ken

It's been a while since I posted and responded to my experience with the Rezum procedure, which I had completed back on 16 Nov, 2017. So nearly 6 months post procedure my urination flow is good and w/o Flomax. No problem emptying bladder. However, I do have on most occasions experience with retro-ejaculation, which was supposed to be a very low probability (5%) of occurrence. At my age, this is not of major concern. Maybe having Rezum done by another doctor would have had a different result. Overall, I'm glad I went through with this procedure. I would recommend this procedure for reducing BPH prior to proceeding with other types of much more invasive treatment.

It always amazes me that someone would ask a bunch of people on the internet with no medical training what kind of procedure they would recommend. Nobody here should be recommending anything to anyone. This should be a forum where people share their experiences and those reading should understand that everyone is different and just because procedure A worked for one doesn't mean it will work for another. If you're not happy with what your urologist is recommending, get a 2nd or a 3rd opinion from other urologists, not a bunch of anonymous geezers on the internet.

Good morning Tom. We on here try to help everyone pic the right procedure for them. You have to ask question. When you go in to a doctor The doctor can only tell you what he thinks will help you. He really does not know until he does the procedure. Most of the time it is only the procedure that he does. With all the procedure out there now to pick from. You have a right to go and get a second or even a third opinion . This is your body that he will be going into. This procedure will change your life. Not all procedures are for everyone. What is good for one may not be good for another. You have to research what ever you are thinking about. Sit down and do a list of pro and cons of every procedure. Especially any side effects. What can you live with. Most men not all still do not want to deal with retro ejaculation. Some doctor will not tell you the truth on some procedure. They either down play it or tell you that you don't need it or it rarely happens If you read the internet. There are side effect with all procedure. You just have to see what you can deal with. Because the doctor does not have to deal with any side effects he just moves on to the next patient. Life is to short to not live it to the full potential. Don'y give up on your body and don't put a procedure because you think it a quick fix. God bless us all Ken

Hi Jason - I would recommend Rezum since it is the least invasive and complicated and has a much quicker recovery as long as the use of medication has either not helped your situation or you can't tolerate it. A note that the Rezum procedure is only supposed to be effective for 2-3 years, but the company hopes in the future that the procedure will be more effective and last longer.
The doctor inserted/removed the cath after 10 days (it was originally supposed to be in for ~5-7 days). This was because of the holiday period. Yes it was inconvenient for having it in, however, after about 6 days I got used to it. The added benefit of having it in, is that there was no straining. I would recommend that the doctor put it in, since they do this all the time and for you to try when you are drugged would be more difficult. Good luck on your procedure.

Good afternoon Jason. The Rezum is not the only procedure that is less invasive so is Urolift. Urolift is at the 5 year mark. There is no cutting. Healing time is 2 to 4 weeks to see results and no side effects. With Rezum You can have 2 to 10 injection. Your doctor will not tell you before. Some men said that they do not hurt but other say it is very painful. And there is a 10% chance of retro. And at 31 I don't think you what that at this time. But it is up to you what you have We cannot tell you what to do but you have to deal with any side effect from the procedure. Good luck Ken .
