Ringing in ears that won't go away

I've had constant ringing in both ears for 2 days now. It's ok when there is noise around me but when sitting on my own I can hear it and it's really annoying. I've just got over a nasty cold but am feeling almost as good as new. I still have a dry cough that wakes me up at night but doesn't hurt as much anymore. My sinuses are 95% clear except some left over mucus and my ears do feel a bit strange but don't hurt at all. I've never had constant ringing like this before and it's driving me mad. Is this normal or has anyone else had this and does it go away?

Thank you

Hi this is very common and absolutely nothing to worry about. When you have negative middle ear pressure (as occurs in blocked eustachian tubes) it dulls your hearing. Your hearing can still be normal but not quite as good as it usually is. This can mean that you hear tinnitus instead of the outside noise. It usually clears up within two to three weeks or sooner, depending on how long it takes for your ears to stop blocking up. Because it is something you don't usually hear, your brain takes a lot of notice of it. It is the brains way of telling you something isn't normal. The best thing you can do is to enjoy it like you enjoy the sound of the ocean or a running river. If you feel positive about it your brain won't take so much notice as you are sending it messages that everything is ok and there is nothing to worry about.

I have tinnitus constantly. Initially you tune in to it but after a while you don't notice it much and because it is there all the time you learn that it doesn't mean anything bad, so you relax. I find it quite soothing. Yours has been caused by illness so just give it a couple of weeks and it will go. smile

      Thanks Olizzieo.

I am terrified it's permanent. Last night my right ear started alternating with the sound very quietly and I just thought oh no.

I haven't had any hearing loss it seems to just be an illness related issue. Is there anything I can do to speed up recovery?

      Thanks

I also have ringing in my left ear, but a while ago; a week ago. My eardrum busted so why is it still ringing?

I think you are doing everything you can to clear up your cold. The best thing to do is always have sound around you. Having the window open, TV or radio on, music playing etc will help to mask the tinnitus. Don't be scared of it though. It's just noise like breathing in and out. It is something millions of people live with, so not to be feared. Initially most people worry because they think it means something is wrong in their head. When you are unwell it can sound quite loud but the nature of tinnitus is that it gets louder at times and softer or disappears at other times. Because yours is caused by illness it will probably be gone within days or weeks. Try and loosen your jaw by opening your mouth and moving your jaw from side to side. If you are worrying you may be clenching your teeth and tensing your muscles around your jaw and face which can make tinnitus louder. Don't worry though, it is very, very normal and being scared of it just makes you tune in to it more frequently which creates a vicious circle. Keep busy and know that it is ABSOLUTELY HARMLESS. Keep smiling xx

Thanks Olizzieo. Much appreciated. I know it's harmless I just don't want it to be there forever otherwise lying in the dark will become a nightmare sad

hi, I also have ringing or tingling in my right ear a few days ago, I didn't notice it at daytime but at night time it disturbs me. I have a dry cold since it's cold here in my place(i called it "dry" becoz it's not runny nose, and yes,i sneeze a bit but no liquid comes out from my nasal area),, what annoyed and worried me more is there are times that when it tingles, i feel lightheaded..when i lie on my bed in the right side positin, i hear the tingling sound like coins bang at each other(not loud),, when i turned at the left side, the ringing/tingling is not there.

BTW It's my right ear only that rings, but I can say it keeps me worried.

Dylan that sound of coins is also tinnintus. There are a lot of different sounds and you can have several at once. Have you had your ear canals checked for wax? It might be compounding the problem. If it lasts for a few days, you can see an audiologist for a hearing test and tympanograms to check if your middle ears have negative pressure. It sounds like that could be what you are experiencing.

    Hi.

I had the same symptoms as you, but only at night when I went to bed. Sometimes the cause can be ear wax, so you could either try some drops in your ears or ask for them to be syringed. I went down the route of putting a couple of olive oil drops in my ear and got them syringed and the tinnitus has disappeared, also my hearing is 95 per cent better now.

I have constant ringing in both ears for many years.  Sometimes it is very low and sometimes very loud but I usually can mask it with TV or music. Have you had your ears checked for wax as if they have wax build up the ringing is usually louder.  I always fall asleep with TV on.  I have had a change in my tinnitus over the last three month and now I have a motor engine/rumbling vibration sound in my right ear  with hearing distortion and it is driving me insane.  Can't eat or concentrated.  Been to many doctors. No one can find anything wrong.  I also having the ringing on and off too.  I am on the edge.  I hope you will be okay.

I have also had tinnitus for years and within the last ear I have been also dealing with a roaring motor type sound in my left ear. My Ent sent me for 2 mri brain scans looking for adnormalities or blockage but it came out normal. My next step is have a particular test at the opthamologist . Will keep all informed.

Thanks all. 4th day now. Driving me mad. My nose is still a bit snotty and cough is still mucusy. Flew yesterday and pressure in ears hurt a lot , more than usual. This makes me think it's sinus related and hopefully not permanent tinnitus!

The same thing happened to me when I flew with a cold. Make sure you see ENT Doctor to get Meds. Mine took a few months to pass and left with a little ringing. Hope you feel better.

Hi there, I was just wondering, how are you doing now?? Do you still experience ringing??

My situation is pretty much the same and I was prescribed ear drops and tablets (for my flu and ear infection) but my ringing has gotten a lot louder than before?? (Just finished the tablets yesterday ((6 days)) and still taking ear drops) Other times I don't hear it (school masks the ringing) but I'm always on edge around my classmates because of how loud they can get. I almost cried because in one of the rooms, the projector was screeching so loud and the teacher was yelling over it, I was almost sure my ringing would get even louder. I don't really know how I feel about this because my mood changes so quickly. At times I feel like, yeah, I could handle having tinnitus, but at othertimes my mood just hits a real time low. I feel so depressed and anxious at times, it's really annoying. However, I've only had the ringing for a week, so hopefully it's going to go away and I don't have any serious illness.

I hope you're fine now and please do reply to me if you have the time to.

Hi Christine, find an audiologist that specialises in tinnitus, and go and have an assessment. It will help you not feel alone while dealing with it. It definitely won't stay like that if it's caused by illness so don't let yourself worry about it. Sometimes that sensitivity to sound occurs when you're not well or while your ears are getting over illness. It's very normal so just put some tissue in your ears when it happens, and that should dull the discomfort until you feel better. Viruses can take a month or more to get over so just wait it out and keep sound around you so you don't notice it as much. xx

Hi there!! Thank you so much for replying to me, and giving me great advice!

I'll try to get my mum to get an audiologist but I'm not sure if I can..

I've already talked to her and she got my dad to take me to the doctors before, where I was given cold and flu medicine (there was really no point in that appointment to be honest). I also asked to go to an ear specialist before but my mum said we have to go to the doctors first to be able to get an appointment with an ear specialist. So I went a second time and was given flu medicine and ear drops. My mental state was fine after the second appointment, until recently when I started feeling all anxious again.

Anyway, I'll try.. but my mum probably won't bother in getting me checked up. She thinks theres a bug in my ears or something.

Thank you again for the great advice!! I'll try to keep sound around and wait it out patiently.
