Ringing in ears that won't go away

I've had constant ringing in both ears for 2 days now. It's ok when there is noise around me but when sitting on my own I can hear it and it's really annoying. I've just got over a nasty cold but am feeling almost as good as new. I still have a dry cough that wakes me up at night but doesn't hurt as much anymore. My sinuses are 95% clear except some left over mucus and my ears do feel a bit strange but don't hurt at all. I've never had constant ringing like this before and it's driving me mad. Is this normal or has anyone else had this and does it go away?

Thank you

Hey PerkP, i hope your ringing has stopped. I suffer from a similar ailment. Sometimes, just for a few seconds, my ears completely isolate every sound and all I can hear is a shrill and constant monotonous sound. Like after a shell-shock (not been in a war, just what I gathered from movies and TV).

These sudden bouts of deafness worry me but reading your post and the commens below, I think what I'm experiencing might be similar to yours and I'm probably being hypochondriac.

Those times where it sounds like you lose your hearing and hear ringing are very normal and many people experience them. I would love to know what they mean, but I have had mine for 30+ years and nothing has happened to my hearing so I presume it is just one of those weird things!! Certainly nothing to worry about but so bizarre when they happen!!

Thanks Olizzieo for the ressurance. I thought all the earplugs, q-tip alternates have finally caught up to me, but I guess it was just another bout of pessimism (that doesn't mean I won't be careful in future).

I've been meaning to visit an ENT specialist before so I assume it is okay if I skip that plan or should I?

I would definitely give seeing the ENT a miss. They will spend a few minutes with you and you will have a big bill afterwards. There is nothing they can or will do if that is your only symptom. smile Nothing wrong with being careful!!!

Hear hear. Yes, that is a dilemma whether or not spend a huge chunk of money on an unfounded anxiety, especially when I dislike spending money on things that I don't get to enjoy cheesygrin.  But I guess I should seek a medical opinion to give this issue a rest, once and for all.  As you rightly pointed out, "nothing wrong in being careful."

I have intense ringing in both of my ears (seems centralized like it's emanating from the back of my head.) I also have this intense vibration that alternates with it. There is also a sound that it synchronized with my heartbeat. There is literally a cacophony of sounds in my head 24/7! I have been afflicted with this since February 23 rd of 2016. It is slowly eating away at me and I am really at my tether's end sad

Sorry to hear you are having problems, can't be easy for you !

Did you have a cold or any sinus problems before the ringing started ? Or did it just happen out of the blue.
