    Karen,

It is a tough decision. I am now 8 weeks post RC repair, subacromial decompression, bicep tenodesis. I went through the same angst deciding what to do and I am a Physical Therapist in the US. I had full thickness tear of two RC tendons and labrum tears. I knew I would be out of work about 6 months. I would get state disability compensation which is about 50% wage replacement and some vacation pay. My job is only protected for 12 weeks. When I told my Dr how conflicted I was about whether to have the surgery or not he said, "look at it as an investment in the future." I did have cortisone and it did help but I knew it would likely be temporaty. It was 5 months from time of injury to time of surgery. I am 57 and normally very active. The first 6 weeks was very tough. The pain was not, for me, as awful as many have indicated. I only used narcotics 4 days. I slept in a recliner 3 days and in bed on a wedge for 4 days. Otherwise I have been sleeping relatively well with a tolerable amount of pain. The hardest part is not being able to work and do most everything at first. My Mom came to help me for 3 weeks. I was driving at 2.5 weeks short distances. My range of motion is coming back and I have not begun strengthening yet but I feel I will regain my strength fairly quickly. I am now at a point where I am glad I did this. I feel it would have gotten worse eventually. If I were not responsible for lifting and caring for p patients as my job I would probably have been back to work sooner. I can do light housekeeping and cooking, grocery shopping, hiking etc.

I hope you will come to the decision that is right for you. Like someone said, many posters on forums are the ones who are struggling. I will tell you, as a Physical Therapist, that many people have this surgery and do not struggle as much as what you read about. It helped to know that my surgeon, and his teenage son, and many of my friends have had this surgery and are doing well and active now. Wish you the best on your journey!
