    Hi Laura,

For some Topamax works wonders, but for me it didnt work and left me feeling depressed. If you are looking for a preventative for Migraines then you can try it and see how you get on. The trouble is their are many different ones and finding the best one for you, is not easy.

Good luck and best wishes. Be really happy to hear how you get on.

I have been on Topamax for migraine prevention for two years now. The side effect I noticed most was fatigue and I lost 30 pounds .It changes my appetite I have a weight problem so I was okay with losing weight.. I have had migraines since age 17. I am in my early 40s and I am pleased with Topamax. I have gone from almost daily migraines to one or two a month now.

mmm, maybe I should give Topamax another try then as I have been on a high dose of Pregabalin and its made me put on weight! It helps to control my migraines but I have to do a lot in the gym to control my weight and of course watch what I eat

what dose are you on if you dont mind me asking ? i have tried most preventitives none working so topamax next on the list !

I take 100mg twice a day. I started off on 50mg twice a day. I am doing well so far. I have hashimotos so I have fatigue already so its hard to tell if the meds or my condition causes the fatigue. I can deal with the fatigue over my bad migraine any day though. I was in the hospital twice in the last two years with them before the topamax was started. It changed my life for the better. It stopped my trigeminal neuralgia also.

I have taken Toprimate on two different occasions ( I had a baby inbetween)

I found as long as you start on a very low dose and increased slowly then the side effect are less. Having said that everyone reacts differently.

I have had very good results with this drug, the minor drowsiness past as my body got used to the drug, you just need to be patient and give it chance to work.

I hope it works well for you

    Hi Laura,

I was on this lethal drug about 5 years ago, yes it stopped my migraines, but it nearly killed me, because my consultant thought I had SJS which is fatal. I have written a lot over the years about this drug and how dangerous it is, check out my previous posts on here.

The side effects are almost worse than the attacks.

I wouldn't go near it if I was you, but it is your choice and you need to weigh up the advantages and disadvantages. If you go ahead please take a close look at any changes you have and report them straight away. Unfortunately 3 GPs didn't understand my symptoms so I had to pay out and go back to see my consultant. I had to go cold turkey which is very dangerous.

    Good Luck

hmm yeah that is the sort of thing that scares me the most! was it for migranes ?

Yes it was Laura, I have suffered with them over 40 years. Nothing works for me so I have gone on a new radical diet in the hope it'll help me as I take way too many triptans.

      Hi Laura,

If you havent tried Botox injections yet, I would seriously give them a try. They ARE available on NHS and they are now a recognised treatment for migraines.

They helped me a LOT, they may do you also

yeah i have had them about 15 years i also rely on triptans at times but what else can u do its rubbish. hope the diet can help

how did u go anout getting those ? i asked my neurologist but she was really unhelpful and refused to get me the botox unless i tried all preventitives including sodium valporate and topamax . i didnt think this was true as the nice website says three preventitives must have been tried not 7 like my neurologist said. is there any way to do it private

Hi Laura, I would quote the Nice website info to your neurologist and see what she says, if not get a referal to my Neuro in London, if thats realistic. He is the leading specialist with headaches/migraines. If its possible see him private and you will cut to the chase and get on top of things a bit quicker.

Yes I did try many preventatives but this was before they allowed Botox on the NHS, so you should get them now for sure.

Do keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

      Take care and best wishes

BTW Laura, have you tried Sumatriptan injections? These get rid of my pain in less than 10 minutes. I get a lot of Cluster Headaches as well as Hemiplglec Migraine. This does complicate things somewhat as If I use the injections too much they can bring on an HM attack, then I am hospitalised from stroke like symptoms, I get paralysed down my left side
