Sciatica over 6 months, now unbearable. :'(

Hi, I've just joined & hope someone may be able to give me some hope. I've had sciatica pain down my right leg now since January. It came on suddenly one day & continued to come & go with my thigh muscle also contracting by itself. In the last few days it has got much, much worse & is now constant. Saw GP 3 days ago & am being referred to surgeon probably for an MRI scan initially. I was given Gabapentin previously but found it didn't help the pain much & just made me so drowsy & kept eating! Doctor has offered amitryptyline but I'm now sure, I'm already on Citalopram for depression. Has anyone tried this? Does it work? I am so desperate for pain relief, I am only 42 with a 3 year old daughter & I'm now unable to walk very well or even stand for more than a minute. I haven't been able to go to work since Thursday & feeling so depressed with it all. :'(

Hello...I have had sciatica pain for 7 months now 24/7. Its debilitating! It's so painful I'm at the end of my rope. I am not a pain taker but I have taken 2 advil here & there. I have tried PT, Chiropractor, Massage, & warm baths. Nothing works! I have recently tried CBD cream also did not work. I just tried Biofreeze & it did help alot. Last week I saw Chiropractor & always feel great after hearing done then 2 hours later Boom! pain returns. I think at this point I just gonna wait it out. But I get depressed & haven't done anything that I like anymore because it's hard to stand, sit laying is the worst at night. I never sleep anymore. I feel so drained. Sciatica sucks & no one understands it unless they have experienced it. I just need support & a friend to talk to. Thank you for listening.

Time to see a neurosurgeon. I've had cases of sciatica for decades all fixed by chiropractic...except one. That time, I failed chiro, PT, pain shots...got an MRI and the doc found a bone spur crushing the sciatic nerve root at L4/L5. Quick, same-day laminectomy and 90% of the pain was gone immediately with the last of the pain dissipating as the inflamed nerve calmed down over the next few days. Completely successful for a simple op. You don't have to live in pain. Get it done!!!

hello, so sorry to hear how you're suffering. As you said it's not until you have this debilitating condition that you can really understand. Like yourself I have tried everything possible from osteopath physio, and more lately accupuncture. I have gone back to my GP as I really don't know what more to do, however she advised to lose some weight and walk!! and to try and push through the pain. Easier said than done. I'm glad to have someone like yourself who understands the pain. I have had this for over a year and a half. Hopefully we'll be fit and well soon

Hello... Thanks for responding. It's nice to know that I'm not alone. I have an appt Monday for a pain management place that has everything plus they take xrays there. I had an MRI 4 years ago & they found 2 herniated discs 1 between L3 & 4 & 1 between 4 & 5 & a bulging disc S1. Not sure which one was bulging. Anyway I tried to get another MRI a couple of months ago but could stay still in the open sitting position because of the pain so I stopped the test because every time you move they have to start over. I'm hoping the xray is good enough! Im not a pill taker but do take 2 advil when Im really struggling. It's nice to come on this site to get support Thank you all for listening & helping.

If you have disk issues from L4 through S1, chances are the sciatic nerve root is being impinged thereby causing all your sciatic pain. Exact thing happened to me with a bone spur at L4/L5. Pain management will either help briefly or not at all. The nerve needs to be freed up from whatever is constricting it. Simple, same-day laminectomy. Tremendous pain relief immediately with the rest subsiding as the inflamed nerve quiets down. Just get it fixed...you will not regret the decision.

RE: sciatica
It takes time and with recent MRI, follow steps with your doctor for recovery.
After healing with injections from the pain clinic, I took physical therapy and the process is long and hard.
But your doctor is the best person who takes charge. Communicate with your doctor.
and you mentioned celexa and is this for depression?
Importantly, you have had an MRI, so the right steps are taken.
Good luck

i just joined, I am from California. I am looking for sciatica information from personal perspectives and forums are the best. I have no experience with sciatica, it started about 10 days ago, on my left leg. i have not see my doctor yet but I know it is sciatica from other people who had what I have and of course, from the Internet. I had hip replacement about 9 years ago and never had any issue with it. I suspect that perhaps my sciatica has to do with the hip replacement as nerves and all are being affected in that surgery.
I would be very interested to know and hear from anyone on this forum who had hip replacement and also have sciatica. Thany you!

i feel your pain everybody on here ive had a bad back for 40 years now i think due to heavy physical jobs with several sciatica flare ups, muscle spasms and herniated discs, but this last one about 6 months ago has gone to a whole new level the pain is unbearable down my left leg into my ankle cant stand up for more than 2 mins cant stand up for the toilet, shower, cook or to even make a brew , cant walk for any distance about 5 meters is the limit and i need to sit down which then takes a few minutes for the pain to subside, had to sleep in a different bed than the mrs so i dont wake her at night, got private health through work so been to drs for referral to physio(which in the past when i could move did a fantastic job to release the nerve and stop the pain which probably lasted for 18 months each session and each time the recovery lasted less and less but the flare ups were less frequent and less painful until this one) but too much pain this time to do any stretches or physio.
i would describe the current pain as having a badly sprained/broken ankle that isnt strapped up and constantly hurts with every movement especially standing, ive tried everything to get rid of the pain but no joy currently on 2x co codamol 30/500 4 hourly, Naproxen and 300mg of pregablin, with oromorph at night so i can sleep through the pain and in the morning so i can get out of bed , keep trying to walk as activity is the way to beat this but pain is crippling,
ive got an appointment with a neurosurgeon in the next couple of weeks desperately hoping he can give me some answers so i can get back to work and playing with the grandkids but it just feeels like there is no light at the end of the tunnel
Reading this back and some of the other discussions i sound like a real pill popping wimp but that is how bad the pain is and im deffo not a pill popper I think ive got a fairly high pain threshold but this is definitely putting it to the test
id love to say to all the people on here things will get better from experience i can honestly say exercise and stretches are the best remedy initially which will cause the pain to subside but theres a time when even the stretches and exercise become too painful to do bad backs dont go away unless this neurosurgeon is going to perform some miracle in an op i cant see an end to itbut i hope im wrong

Hello. I can relate. I have been in pain for over a year. Started off as hip pain and then down the leg to the foot. I had xrays. Were normal. Then an MRI. 2 herniated disc. Started Physical Therapy. Made me worse. Saw a chiropractor. Really made me worse. Got an epidural. No help. Got another epidural (Different area). No help. Tried Meloxicam (anti-inflammatory) No help. Tried Nabumetone. (anti-inflammatory) No help. I'm doing horrible. Very disabled. Can't live my life. I'm on the "list" to see a surgeon. FOUR MONTH WAIT. Kaiser.
