Sciatica over 6 months, now unbearable. :'(

Hi, I've just joined & hope someone may be able to give me some hope. I've had sciatica pain down my right leg now since January. It came on suddenly one day & continued to come & go with my thigh muscle also contracting by itself. In the last few days it has got much, much worse & is now constant. Saw GP 3 days ago & am being referred to surgeon probably for an MRI scan initially. I was given Gabapentin previously but found it didn't help the pain much & just made me so drowsy & kept eating! Doctor has offered amitryptyline but I'm now sure, I'm already on Citalopram for depression. Has anyone tried this? Does it work? I am so desperate for pain relief, I am only 42 with a 3 year old daughter & I'm now unable to walk very well or even stand for more than a minute. I haven't been able to go to work since Thursday & feeling so depressed with it all. :'(

Hi
I'm glad I found someone in need. I'm not sure where you're based but hopefully you can make it to this clinic based off Edgware rd London .
I myself suffered sciatica on and off for over 9 years and lower back pain. I've had all the pain killers which don't work plus nerve root injections. The first one was ok for a few months but the second was not good at all. Then the meetings with the surgeon... Omg no thanks not to mention having young children myself I didn't like the idea of having that kind of surgery and waking up to the kids jumping on the bed. I have a worn lower lumbar joint and had 2 herniated discs forcing me out of a 20yr career which after a long painful journey I've managed to get back into after 4yrs.
Anyway this clinic offers treatment called IDD which decompresses the discs by slowly stretching out the spine allowing the vitamins and nutrients to naturally regenerate and the discs to heal.
The clinic is called SPINEX DISC CLINIC and the number is 0207 100 4598.
If you have an MRI scan that is a plus.
I highly recommend this treatment as I was in pain 247 and could barely walk at one point. This really did save me and I hope it does the same for you.
Good luck 🙂

I've only had sciatica for 2weeks. The pain eased dramatically when I lay down with my leg raised and supported. As soon as I get up the pain starts again. Codeine and tramadol had no effect. I've been on amtripptyline for three days. I started on one 10mg tablet a day for two days which didn't seem to help, I upped it to two a day and it's really much better. I can still feel the pain is there in the background( difficult to explain) but it's much, much better. I feel woozy when I wake but that clears. Hope this helps

Stop taking the drugs and go see a chiropractor. I've had sciatica many, many times over the years caused by many different issues (trauma, pelvic alignment, locked SI joints...). Always cured 100% by chiropractic. The only time I needed more was when my neuro found a bone spur crushing the sciatic nerve root at L4. Laminectomy...walked out...pain gone.

I've lived with sciatica since 4th September 2013....it has been a total nightmare at the start - the pain was so total I ended up walking with a stick & back brace with painkillers to hand. Eventually a year in, in June 2014 I had the option of surgery (partial removal of disc) or steroid injection in the location of the damaged disc...since my entire family are doctors I got several professional opinions - I eventually took the least intrusive option of the injection (as advised) - I can't say it worked fully - but it has relieved the pain (sometimes I get the pain again - but this passes) - I am no longer on painkillers, but I do have to wear shoe slips to correct slightly different leg lengths (very common) everyday I'm on the x-trainer for a minimum of 30-40 mins and am very careful with picking stuff up, the way I sit (had to get rid of 1 sofa already) and the way I sleep (a harder mattress worked better for me)....failing all that I do from time to time have to take a lie down with my left leg at a height to relieve the pain (again).

Hi I'm just new to the forum and I really empathise with you. I've had sciatica for just over 2 months now, which initially started in my right leg and has now moved to the left. The pain can be unbearable at times especially when it's occurring in both sides. I've tried Amitriptyline, however this did nothing to ease the pain and only made me feel drowsy. I take Naproxen and cocodamol but to be honest I really don't feel any benefits. Like yourself I would welcome any advice.

l have the same problem l got sciatica just on 7 months ago they first gave me amitriptyline then Gabapentin ,they said it would take up to a month to take effect but as you say it did not do anything ! l WAS in so much pain lastnight l was in tears .I had 2 knee replacements and was walking like l had never had bad knees till this episode . So l took Naproxen the pain was gone within 3 hrs ! l was walking 100% better l still felt a bit of pain but nothing to complain about. Gabapentin is for nerve control to brain they told me but Naproxen is anti inflammatory. So this is what you need have just took another now before bed so l can sleep tonight please try Naproxen or Voltarol 2.32% you won't be sorry

HI Bagoomummy,
I write to you to say I WAS like yourself for almost 3 years, also having a small boy to bring up and unable to carry him, play football and run around. To be honest, walking was getting awkward. I am a fit surfer and all this started when I was 39.
I met ALEX who is masseur and after a sessions of massage, he has COMPLETELY broken down the tight muscles and relived me 100% form my pains. I thought life would never be back to what it was but now I am back to being myself.
I write here as I was so upset with my life that I felt it was the end and now am back to a normal life and had to tell everyone about ALEX.
Since this, ALEX has treated and helped so many friends he now has a web site and may be able to help many more people from this life of agony.
Please check www.sciaticure.com for more information.
Good luck with it all and from my personal experience there is light at the end of the tunnel.

I've been fighting sciatica pain in my left leg as well as extreme knee pain for almost 2 months now. I had a bout about 30 years ago but with exercises and therapy I got much better. This time the pain has been excruciating and relentless. My son in law wheeled me into the ER a month ago and xrays and ultrasound were taken. Severe lumbar spondylosis, congenital hip osteoarthritis, etc etc was diagnosis..bone and joint Doc gave me steroid pack which finally allowed me to walk some, now on Diflenac anti inflammatory and switch between ice packs and heat on my back and leg. L3-L4-L5, S1 are my culprits. Will be seeing a spine specialist on November 13 so hoping to find where nerve pain is located. I did go to chiropractor as I was desperate for 5 adjustments and at least i am walking a little now. Sleeping is so difficult but I purchased a Natracure hip/back piece that straps on with velcro to hold either the ice or heat in place. Hoping for better days ahead.

Hi Hannah, I feel your pain. I've now had this awful debilitating pain for over a year. I've tried everything from Naproxen coocodamol, physio, osteopath and even CBD oil., but to no avail. Like yourself I find it very difficult to stand for a period of time. I am going back to my G.P tomorrow as this is getting me down. I did try amitryptyline but it did nothing but leave me with a very dry mouth!! I wish we could wake up one morning and it's gone. I'll keep researching for any help. 🙉

Sciatica
Sometimes there is no fix but a spine op. Happened to me. Tried EVERYTHING and then went to my neurosurgeon who found a bone spur crushing the sciatic nerve root at L4. Simple, same-day decompressive laminectomy removed the spur plus shaved back anything touching the nerve. Immediate relief; last of the inflammation gone in a few more days. Consider seeing a neuro...

I've booked an appointment with a holistic therapist today to try accupuncture , hopefully this will help. I was also recommended Arnica.

I've had acupuncture done a few times over the years. Effective for some if there's no real root cause that must be surgically corrected. Arnica can be mildly toxic. I would check it against ALL your current meds, plus OTCs, to see if there are any interactions that could cause a problem.
