Second Tkr

Hi all,

Having my second tkr tomorrow, not looking forward to it, but gotta do it.  Had my first one last August and other than a bit of stiffness so glad I did it!👍🏻 Did have a hard time on those pain pills, not looking forward to that and all the side effects, but did a lot of reading from all of you and am a bit wiser on how to handle things this time around.  Hubby has everything ready in the bedroom for me, ice machine, walker, pillows, shower bench...etc., you know the routine.  Will let you know how things go, a little anxious, but want it over.  Got my Chico Marx advise excerpts bookmarked! Lol

Many blessings to all of you,

Cherry🍒

Good luck!!!!  I am only 8 weeks into my first TKR and thankfully my other knee is ok for now.  I can't imagine thinking of having another one!!!!

Sending prayers of strength, calm, and patience to you today! You already know the drill, so that will help you BIGTIME! You will probably find that you feel better faster because you have had the surgery before.

I had my second TKR three and a half months after my first. Couldn't WAIT to have it done because my new knee was pain-free, and I wanted THAT for my other one.

Nearly three years post surgery I have MANY aches all over my body due to osteoarthritis. My TWO NEW KNEES feel GREAT!

I wish you a fantastic surgery and speedy recovery. Stay in touch to let us know how you are doing.

All the best for tomorrow Cherry. At least you know what to expect this time around.

I found it a totally different experience 2nd time around. I refused iv morphine this time  & so glad I did as my recovery in hospital was so much better!

This knee was more painful but I found the rom was better from the outset.

Good luck for tomorrow. Keep in touch

    Hi

Just wanted to wish you good luck tomorrow. I had mine done last August too. I was supposed to have my other one done this month, I chickened out. Mainly because my tkr is not where I want it to be yet. Hopefully in August it will be better. Once again good luck. If you want to talk you can email me

      Hi,

Well, here I am 2 days post-op, 2nd tkr and doing pretty good!  Been up and around the house using the walker, doing a few exercises, but the best part is I actually slept 6 hours straight!  The PA told me to take a Benadryl before bed to help me sleep, worked like a charm!  Have the ice machine on whenever I'm laying down.   So far, this time around was a 180, hope I keep progressing at this rate.  In fact, I feel less tightness on the new knee than the other knee and that was done 7 months ago!  Start PT in 2 weeks, but doing some exercises now. Next doctor appt. 2 1/2 weeks, hope I keep improving!  Btw Arlene, you have to send email address through Private Message service😊  I'll email you when you send it.

Thanks to all the wonderful well wishes I received from everyone, I appreciate your kindness and concern.

      Many blessings,

      Cherry🍒

Great to hear that things are going so well for your #2 Knee!😊 That Benadryl trick sounds like a winner! (Took me 12 weeks to hit six hours of sleep all in a row!) Sleep really seems to be the key to success in recovery, but sleep sure can be hard to achieve!

Congratulations on a GREAT start for your #2 Knee! Getting both knee replacements completed is BIG PROGRESS! Your spring and summer and onward will be SO much better now! Getting rid of all the pain will produce a NEW LEASE ON LIFE, for sure!

Happy walking, shopping, enjoying standing without pain and get ready for enjoying life again!🤗😎😁

      Hi Cheryl,

Thanks for all of your encouragement, hoping everything continues!  I had so many problems with the first one that this one seems like a dream!  (Geez, did I just day that?lol)

Yeah, I was really surprised about taking a Benadryl, but worked like a charm.  You wake up a little groggy, but it soon wears off...just getting sleep is so great.  I love your comment 'happy shopping' cuz I'm getting bored with online shopping.  One thing I found interesting was when my PT gal told me, since I now have both knees done, to buy ALL new shoes!  She said my gait is now corrected, but the shoes we have been using adjust to the old way of walking.  Makes sense, so I christened my new knees by ordering a couple pair of Sketchers to get me started.  However, she did say to concentrate on my everyday shoes, could keep the shoes that were only used for special occasions as most are only used a few times....I think most of you women have no problem with buying new shoes! Lol. Last year my son bought me a sign that said 'Buy the damn shoes, life is short!'

Thank again for your well wishes, I always look forward to hearing what everyone on this site has to say!

One of the biggest surprises to me following the surgeries was how stable I felt as I stood and especially when I walked. My gait TOTALLY changed! ( Turns out my FAMILY was very aware of my bent knee walking but just didn't want to hurt my feelings by MENTIONING it!!!😲wink

I got new shoes, new flip-flops, and continue to go barefoot as much as possible so I can do good stretches all day long. I did all my physical therapy barefoot so I could practice learning how to walk properly. It is STILL amazing to me how PAIN totally had revamped my movement!😩

I am just 5'4" with short legs in a family of six-footers with LONG legs. Although I need to take twice as many steps as my family members, I can now do really good keeping up! Our oldest son, who is 6'4", said last year when we were at the zoo, "Hey Mom! Those new knees have really got you truckin' !"😁 I felt so happy to be able to keep up with everyone without having the horrible pain.

Enjoy EVERY MOMENT with those NEW KNEES!🤗🤗

I hope everyone reading this will one day get your life back and be able to live a life without pain!??

      Hi Cheryl,

Reading your reply is absolutely a delight!  You are such a positive person, which is what gives the rest of us the energy to carry on!  Btw, I'm shorter than you, 5'1", think I shrunk since I use to be 5'3" when I was younger...much younger! Lol.  I started working on my leg lifts today, hurt like the dickens, but know it will take time to rebuild my muscles, poor things are dead!  Start out patient rehab in 2 weeks, so going to try to get my leg stronger before I go.  Heel slides seem to be pretty good, so that should help.

      Take care,

      Blessings,

      Cherry🍒

To get me started on the leg lifts, my home are PT had me loop my husband's spare belt around my foot. I was on the bed with my head raised a bit. I would use the end of the belt to assist my leg lifting. Besides making me feel more competent DOING the lifts, it also helped me strengthen my leg so that when I COULD lift my leg on my own without the belt assist, I did it quite well.

I sat in a hard chair to do the heel slides with my foot on a washcloth on our wooden floor. Tried doing them while laying on the PT table, and it drove my sciatica CRAZY! Sitting worked better.

Mini squats while holding on to my kitchen counter helped develop my quads which, like yours , were dead. Balance work on my leg helped a great deal, too.

All told I had SIX MONTHS of PT. between the two knees. WORTH EVERY MINUTE!😊

Keep in touch to let me know how everything is going, ok???

Sounds like a great way to celebrate!

I am really enjoying wearing some boots I was not able to wear before surgery!

Blessings and good wishes for your healing and recovery! 😀
