Sertraline 50mg. nausea,weakness side effects

Posted , 31 users are following.

My doctor prescribed me Sertraline 50mg tablets on Friday. Since then I have been feeling really drained, weak and finding it hard to focus and sick and nauseous at times.

He did say the first week would be tough but just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience and any tips on how to battle these symptoms?

Many thanks

    Hi James,

I had all those symptoms when I first started. I had hot water with fresh ginger for the nausea but I just gave into the side affects really. I slept alot and took time off work. My doctor gave me valium to help ease the anxiety which really helped. I tried to eat well too - no caffeine or sugar so that my stomach wasn't upset.

They do wear off though and only came back every time I increased the dose again. I started on 12.5mg and went up to 50mg very slowly.

    Hi matey.

Yeah typical side effects and to be honest dont sound as severe as others have had them so keep positive. The drained feeling i still have and im on 3 weeks of 50mg so dont be alarmed if it continues for weeks as it will get better. Im yet to notice any changes but have read it does take 4 to 6 weeks to notice anything. Any earlyer is a placebo effect. My first week was brilliant then it wore off and back to my anxiety state but not as bad as before the tablets. You get worse before you get better dude.

    Hi

Hang in there. Everything you describe seems normal for the initial side effects which lasted about 3 weeks for me. I've had similar side effects whenever I up or lower my dose. I was prescribed it to help with crippling anxiety and it took about 6 weeks for them to really take the edge off.

    Wishing you well.

Hi James; those are the usual side effects for the first 1-3 weeks. I am on 50 mg for three months now and all that is in the past. Just hang on.

    Hi everyone..,

    Thanks for sharing your experiences...

Anyone ever experienced a mouth full of ulcers when first starting this med?

    I'm not joking... I've counted them,., I've got 10!!

    So sore!!

I was first prescribed 50mg of Sertraline which made me feel a little nauseous and raised my body temperature so I was constantly hot and sweaty (gross!). I had a few more but they were the main ones.

After a couple of weeks they subsided and my dosage was increased to 100mg. For two weeks I have been nauseous again, bad stomach issues, headaches, infections and so on, but as the time's gone on they have gotten less too.

I think a lot of the time it is your body adjusting to new medication, and once it has settled in you then the side effects do wear off. For how long for, I don't know, still waiting on that answer myself! I've found that rest and relaxation have helped by taking a few days off and sleeping. It is tough, but even though all these side effects have occurred I feel a little more settled in myself, and that is helping me deal with the effects now.

It won't be easy, especially if your dose is increased, but it is important to rest :-)

    Hi James

I see that you posted this over a year ago now but wondered how you got on eventually with Sertraline. I started on Sertraline 12 days ago and for the first few days felt OK but after that the side effects kicked in and I am still experiencing quite bad nausea and trembling.

How did things go with you?

    many thanks

I'm on my 10th day and feel a bit better - though am scared to say so in case I jinx things. I'm fortunate to have a husband at home to fetch and carry he's been amazing. I should say we're retired so no work commitments. Not sure I would've been able to go to work. I think you've probably been on them longer than me. All I want to know is that after 2 weeks can I look forward to feeling better soon and return to being a functioning adult?! Best wishes

Thank you for your kind words. Taking 50 mg Sertraline is making me I'll enough, I think 100 would lay me out! You're a brave lady.I don't want to rule the world just live quietly day to day without panicking. I only started 2 weeks ago. You're very kind words made me quite tearful. X
