Setback with soft tissue issues

Hi all: Just thought I would update my situation. I am now 12 weeks post op but having a lot of back pain, pain in both hips and legs plus headaches. This was rough as after last week, when I went on a great hike, I thought I was at the breakthrough stage.

Anyway, after much pain, worry and discomfort, I went to Emergency and luckily my own M.D. was the physician on site.

My x rays are fine. He thinks I have some issues with soft tissue related to misalignment of my hips and my body's over compensation by my right side muscles and tendons, now causing pain and inflammation of both hips, legs and hips. So, I have a prescription for pain meds Tramadone, advised to rest for a few days and then get back to exercising and healing.

I have set up an appointment with the Orthpaedic surgeon for Thursday.

For other hippies, I am echoing Maloo's advice not to overdo it.

Also, if you think something is not right in your recovery, go see the Orthopaedic surgeon or your M.D.

Thanks so much Annette. Still pain and discomfort today but the pain meds helped so I finally had a good sleep last night.

Thanks for sharing that, Cathy.  I'm glad you went to Emergency instead of staying home and worrying more.   I tend to forget about all the soft tissue stuff.....for me it's just all about the joint.  But that is obviously not correct.  Sounds like the doctor has given you good advice.  Keep us posted.

    Hugs, Leslie

So sorry that you are having a rough time of it but glad that it is not your prothesis causing the problem. The soft tissues take the longest to heal ... that's why ' the take it slow' advice as it is hard to heal when constantly pushing it. The issue of realignment is every bit as real. The hip bone is connected to the .. and as we start adusting wit ou r new hip, it affects our posture and ga it and respouses of aLl the othe jpints involved in walking. Not to mention that many of us are never advised that our shoes ma y be worn in the sole or tread and aggravate the problem...

I hope your surgeon is helpful and that you will continue to share the advice you receive as it increases our collective knowledge and may well help others with similar problems.

I would also ask about hydrotherapy which might help relax your joints and muscles ... it is a stressful journey.

Hoping your week improves dramatically with more certainty and less pain.

Hhhmmm ... ga it and respouses of aLl the othe jpints involved in walking. Should read

' gait and responses of all the other joints involved in ...'

Hugs to you and everyone involved on this journey.

Thanks very much Linda. You are very knowledgeable about the soft tissue and realignment processes taking time in the healing process.

I will ask about the hydrotherapy too. Hoping tge surgeon is helpful as I am concerned that they will only focus on the hip and not give any specific direction on what I need to do to move forward. That is why I think that the family doctor is good too as he at least looks  at the whole picture.

i will definitely share what happens as your sharing and those of other hippies knowledge and support is invaluable.

    Hi Cathy,

As healing continues we challenge ourselves more - I believe that this is good .. how would we know otherwise where we are, right ?

Good that you went to have it checked though - you must have been in a lot of pain ...who knew so much more was involved than "just" the hip joint???

our body is amazing - we do well to listen to her more closely ---

    big warm hug

Yeah totally agree with Linda because l had both done 8 weeks apart l go really bad backpain for a while and sometimes pains going down mmy leg and as l started walking and doing a walk everyday to try and help my hips tecover l was ending up in agony after with my knees. When l saw my surgeon thats exactly what he told me that my body was realining itself to suit my new hips and my posture would be totally diffrent so l would get these pains for a while yet. He said it can take up to a full year for the sofr tissue that he has cut right through and muchles to heal. So although you look fine from the outside your inside is still trying to heal so take it easy don't push youreself to do more. In my circumstance the knee pain was getting worse to the point l had to stop my walks and knew something was not right. Especially my left knee it was all swollen looking if l walked even the smallest distance and my ankles were swelling wgich had not happened before so back to doctors to get xrays in my knee's. I sort of knew what was coming as l have had bother with my knees for years after l fell of a forklift truck in my previous job about 15 year or more ago and at the time my knee's took the hit and they had never been right since then. So 2 knew knee's will be fitted in next coming months which l accept l saw the xrays and jeeze they were in some state with OA. It was not a shock. The shock was getting told about my hips last november it was the last thing l though l would be told as l had never had any bother with them up to jan last year when l thought l had pulled a muscle in my groin and l was only getting the pain in the left leg months past after l had went to doctors and he agreed it was probably just a pulled muscle but as time went by it got worse and worse so the doctor sent me for xrays and l was told the next week l had severe OA in both hips and they needed replaced. Total shock had no idea thats what was coming especially when the pain just seemed to be in one. But after l had been toldvthat l suddenly started getting shooting pains down my right leg to. So l got 1st hip in dec last year and 8 weeks later got 2nd. Doctor told me it was fast and quite close together but l was adament l just wanted them done. He warned me then about the sift tisdue inside and my full body having to adjust to suit my new hips and that my recovery might be slightly longer but l recovered quite well l would say and just when l think l am.getting there this knee pain appears and its back to the chopping block for me. I am going to br like the terminator at 43 years old with basically full metal legs. But l need to be normal and if l want any quality of life l will get the knew knees. I just can't wait for the day l can climb the stairs into an airplaine to go on holidays again as l have not been for what will be 2 years after the knee's and l usually go twice a year me and the hubby.

Sorry got carried away with my story......so yeah justctake each day as it comes as you are still healing inside just do as much as your body wants to do and you will notice through time you will be ablecto do a bit more each day. Just remember they have cut right through your muscles and sawed and drilled bone.

Maloo is right don't overdo it hun

Hi Laura. Thanks for sharing your journey. You have been through so much with your hips and now getting your knees done too. This really gives me perspective. You are a brave soul to get your knees done too. I just pray that everything is okay as I dread the thought of having to have any more surgeries. I will try to be like you and think of the future as I wait to hear about your well deserved y holiday once you are recovered.

      All the best,

    Hi Cathy,

Thanks for your post and letting us know whats happened.  I am 10 weeks post surgery and have just starting experiencing exactly what you describe.  My back gave out on saturday without any warning (I was making a ham sandwich at the time!).  Since then I have been unable to straighten up, both hips are sore and I generally cant walk any distance.

I tried to phone my physio to get an appointment with them, however they say because it is my back that is a sepparate issue and that I need to get my insurers to set up a new approval code.  I was a bit surprised by that as it seems reasonable to me that having had hip surgery, back pain is almost definately a possibility and likely the two are linked.

I'm now unsure which way to go for treatment. Plus, I am meant to be going to London for the weekend.  Great timing.

I hope your symptoms get better soon.  I'll look out for any updates from you.

    Thanks

    David.

      Hi David,

Sorry for butting in here ....and sorry to hear about your back ..

I can't stand it when PT's or other providers do what they are doing to you - Same with me but a bit different -

After 2nd (L)THR surgery, my 1st (R) hip started to hurt - something was not right (pun intended) - but no help for that one eventhough it is/was hip related - ended up with trochanteric bursitis ..

My back went out too and PT told me to lie down and stretch out for about 10-15 minutes a couple of times a day - Also got a tube sock, put 2 tennisballs in them, made a knot and placed it under my back - you will feel slight pressure - breathe into it - just a couple of minutes -

Or have someone rub some muscle ointment on it - Tiger Balm or similar -

I hope you will feel better soon and enjoy your weekend in London

      angel blessings

This really should not have happened - you are exactly right that the hip is relevant and connected. This is bureaucracy run amok .. and not all the fault of the PT. It is worth trying to see your GP to get a prescription for the physio before this gets worse and causes other problems. Good luck. Sorry that you are having a tough time of it.

      Hi Linda and Renee,

Thanks for your emails.  I dont have a good history when it comes to physios so I am really trying to hold myself back from a big rant.

I had phoned the insurer and they were somewhat bemused and told me that there wasnt much they could do and if I wanted to be seen about my back I needed a referal from my GP. Not much use as I really needed to be seen quickly.

I got to the point today I'd had enough so I phoned the physio again today and got someone else on the phone. I painted it on thick and said I was really struggling since my hip op and felt that i wasnt progressing well and needed to see the physio again. I omitted to mention the back, I'll cross that bridge tomorrow when I see them. I am hoping that the physio is a bit more proactive this time round as the previous times i felt he was just going through the motions rather than properly assessing me.

      Finger crossed,

      David.

Hi David. Thanks for your posting too. It is helpful to hear about your experience. I can certainly empathize with you.

good luck with the physio appointment. It's probably a good idea to get an appointment with the G.P. as he/she can hopefully write a prescription for the physio and some strong pain relief meds. .if you get some relief and rest for a few days then you may be more up for the trip to London.

I will keep you posted. PLease do the same.

hope you are feeling better soon too.

      Hi Cathy,

I had my physio and it was very useful.  He did a full assessment and found the mobility wasnt as good as it should be and my glutes were too weak.  Part of the mobility issue is that my aductor is really tight.  He pressed on it and I just about went through the roof! All of that is making my posture bad and also stressing my back as I try to compensate for the lack of joint mobility....

I now have more strengthening exercising, stretching and I have to go back to be reassessed in two weeks.

Good luck with your back. I hope it resolves itself.

      David.

Hi David. Thanks for the update. So glad to hear that the physio session was helpful and you got some concrete info on what the issue is as well as exercises to strengthen those glutes. Yeah, the first few times the physio pressed on my gluteus medius? I think-it really killed then got less painful.

      Take Care,

      Cathy

I am very glad to hear that this went well. It sounds much like my own muscle experiences. I bet you will be doing the 'lovely' clam exercises and related adductor lifts. I also had problems with a very tight IT band (also very touch sensitive). It needed frequent work (5-6 x daily) to ease it. Be sure to ask your PT about this - often co-occurs with the problems you describe. Very glad you are on the right path. Good luck and stay committed to the exercises - these help even 5 months later.
